People always argue about one or both brakes, but the bigger issue is how hard a rider will dare to brake. Without regular practice, most riders won’t dare to get even close to the bike’s braking capacity, regardless of whether they use one brake or both.

The clip of the dude rear ending the car that cut into the lane -- no amount of expert braking would've stopped that. Only way he could've gotten out of it was to swerve and go around the cars while braking. But that's not the core problem here... The problem is the dude was moving at least twice hauling ass into a large pack of very slow, nearly stopped traffic.
@mhoeij
@mhoeij Жыл бұрын
Depends on how early he starts braking, when the car fist starts moving towards his lane, or when it first enters his lane, or when it is fully in his lane. Brake early and it'll be OK. But this rider was late to brake, and even then, he pretty much didn't slow down at all. The accident has many causes: too much speed, too late braking, and not braking hard. The faster we go, the earlier we have to start braking, and the harder we have to brake. This rider went fast but failed on both of the other two counts.

I started on a motorcycle, and have been riding for a 6 years, and only got my first car 2 years ago. In those 6 years, I've owned 7 sports bikes, from 250cc up to 600cc. My 3rd bikes front brakes suddenly came on out of nowhere without my input, when I was a couple minutes from home on my way home from work. Since then, I've mainly relied on the rear brake to slow me down, and only use the front in emergency situations.
@vhjvbhjb5280

Rear brake is also used to plant the bike and prevent from lifting the rear wheel. If you just use the front brake and then suddenly have to emergency stop, your going over the bars, or you can’t utilize the stopping force cause your going to lift the rear wheel. Start with rear brake then front and progressively brake harder.

I'd also add that the rear brake offers a lot of smoothing in low speed maneuvering. Really nice for when your riding through parking garages or in stop and go traffic. I hardly use my front brakes, outside of emergency braking. The rear and engine braking is almost always enough to get me to cruise to a nice easy stop. Just need to be aware of what you use more for maintenance.

When I first started out, I braked with the front as it was more familiar to me from a bicycle. But one time I was on the road and a car suddenly came out and the side of the road was covered with dirt/sand, so I instantly lost control of the motorcycle and fell. But thankfully I wasn't going all that fast in the first place so nothing too bad, but my pinky finger did get some bleeding under the fingernail.

I found that using the rear brake is better on dirt roads (if on a street bike) it doesn't stop as hard which is good so you don't slide, and it's not the front wheel which helps with the control. It's more like I'm dragging rather than pushing with my momentum, and on dirt it's better to drag cause if you push the loose stuff can really fuck you over. And I think that's a mistake most make on gravel roads and what not.

Interesting how this is different from regular bikes. I rarely use the front break alone, because when underestimating your speed slightly you will hop over the handle. Which I did as a kid a couple of times until I switched by breaking habits. 🤐

This is so interesting to me as a cyclist. We have both brakes, too, obviously. But I mostly use the back brake as it is safer and more consistent and only augment with or outright use the front brake with I need to stop quickly. I think the added speed and weight might make the increased stopping power a must and with extra mechanical support on the head tube, losing control of the stem while braking is lessened.

Practice, front, back, and both. Do drills in a parking lot. Seriously, it has saved my bacon too many times. Also, if you can practice with your street bike on a dirt lot and on grass (slick and tricky) that goes a long way, too. If you have to dive off pavement it helps immeasurably to know what you and your bike can really do. I taught my better half and a close friend, both became confident, good, and safe riders. Our friend took her Daytona to a track day at Laguna Seca. An enthusiastic kinda-rider lowsided on a curve cutting into her line, but she was able to calmly ride into the runoff, get around him and his bike, and pop back onto the track. She drilled for it and her practice paid off. The three of us took our bikes over six miles of gravel once. No problem, and the dirt riders at the top of the hill were amazed. 😁

I use rear for fast corners, when I'm stopped on a hill, and generally during slower speeds just to save my front brake some wear.
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 Жыл бұрын
Your bike tire is always what wears out first though. I often go through 3 back tires for every 1 front tire. I've also yet to wear out the brake pads on a bike, and its like maybe $20 for new pads? Not only is your rear more likely to slide when doing that first turn greatly increasing your chance of wrecking at high speeds, but you're also not preloading the front suspension like you should (it should tilt down a little, but not as much as it should), so you're not getting the turning speeds your bike is capable of. Downhill is the biggest time you'd want to use rear brakes (unless you have to stop fast, then use both and scoot your butt back as far as you can), otherwise its typically best to use both brakes (your car uses all 4 brakes at once, that's intentional, it works the best).
@Starlesslemon
@Starlesslemon Жыл бұрын
@@jakegarrett8109 I ride a Harley and scrape my pegs all the time. Loading the front suspension brings my forwards even closer to the ground giving my less lean angle. You're also far more likely to wreck using your front brake in a turn over your rear. As long as you don't lock up your rear and aren't doing burnouts, you shouldn't have them wearing inconsistently.
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 Жыл бұрын
@@Starlesslemon I've never heard of someone wearing their front tire the same as the rear, it doesn't even make sense that it ever would. The rear wheel is always wearing under load (unless you have a front wheel drive motorcycle, which I have built some, and yes those then just wear out the front really quick). Your brakes ONLY slow you down, so your front tire for the most part is only heavily used when stopping, meanwhile your rear is always heavily used. Example, my 15 HP motorcycle I'm always using 15 HP (unless I'm slowing, otherwise its always pinned), that's 15 HP on my rear wheel during acceleration and cruising, but almost nothing on my front tire. I might lightly tap the brakes after a few minutes, but I'm not slowing with even 30 HP of deceleration, its just not a lot of wear on it.
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 Жыл бұрын
@@Starlesslemon Also note, on my motorized bikes that ARE front wheel drive, I have truly identical front and rear tires. Bikes with the rear wheel (identical tires again, often the same ones accross multiple bikes), its ALWAYS the tire driven that gets like 3x the wear. There is no more perfect test than my custom setups that have identical parts, and testing each wheel and I'm the same operator so I use them about the same (however I like to skid the rear tires through the intersections on my front wheel drive bikes, but still those rear tires last far longer than the driven wheel). On standard motorcycles I've never seen that change outcomes even though manufacturers might be putting more rubber on the rear wheels to better match them.

The fastest riders are generally the ones that are the best on the brakes. Master the front and you're safer and faster. The best lesson I was taught was to picture your brake pressure as having 0-100. The first 5 should always be the same linear gentle rate to load the front tire and suspension. After that you can apply more pressure at a higher rate. Basically, always load the tire before you work the tire.

Similarly I was taught the front tire doesn't like surprises warn it, first.

I had a motorbike accident before and I realized it was due to me pressing my Front brake so hard compare to my rear that it didn't just slow me down, it made me lose control because my front was full on braked that the grip on the front was more better than the rear that I eventually slid on the road to a grass covered area. Afterwards I cautiously use my front brakes, my rear brakes are my true saviour now, If I want to stop quickly...Then using both brakes I have to use but carefully My bike did not have ABS nor any featured braking system like a sports bike does, my bike is relatively old so I don't complain, it was partly due to my immediate thought of using it like a bicycle brake.

I use my rear brake for slow speed intricacies and normal stopping and the controlled front braking for emergencies mainly because I’m a mechanic and two pads and dealing with one caliper is easier to change than four pads and two calipers to deal with

I remember first time riding a road bike i nearly crashed pulling into the dirt driveway because I was so used to dominant back braking on a dirt bike something i never even thought about as I was only 13 and on my brothers bike without permission 🤣

Do NOT use front brake if you are in gravel, or if there is gravel on the road. Ask me how I know that.

Did the Ken Hill pro school at Thunderhill raceway earlier this year; someone in the class asked about using the rear brake on-track. Ken's answer? Not necessary, entirely rider preference.

As more of a cyclist we’ve always been trained to use rear and both but never front cause bicycle wheels lock up easily and we might flip forwards if the lock the front wheel

Yeah no, that's something some people think. But it's a really bad habit. The front brake should do most of the braking. Only relying on the rear brake not only more then doubles the brake distance, it also slides out very fast in corners in fast decents. I'm from a family of race cyclists, and it's always front brake first, and often only.

I use the front brake most of the time. But if you dont use the rear, you arent going to use it in an emergency. Because by the time you think about using the rear, you wasted it anyway

the rear brake is called "engine braking" :) nah, I’ll use the rear in an emergency, or really slow speed, tight manoeuvring. Otherwise it’s front brake and engine braking

I wonder if experience with a bicycle would be useful learning how to motorcycle. The brake functions at least seem to have some parallels

Only front break ... you will face plant cuz front wheel goes to one side but your body wont change direction Only back break ... Wheel will screech and you will slow down poorly and the wheel will swerve out of line Both brakes ... abs starts working properly and you can actually safely slow down with proper brake pressure (just shy of the point where abs sets in)

Not condoning it at all, but I’ve been riding without a back brake for like 2 months now smfh 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ in the process of ordering all new parts and stuff… I’m a firm believer in using both brakes simultaneously but all of my real stopping power come from front brakes + engine breaking…

You forgot that dragging the rear brake in a slow speed tight turn will help the bike turn easier with less effort from the rider. When learning to do tight figure 8s rear brake is key. Or any kind of off-road riding rear brake is very important.
