I started racing in 1996. Back then the motors were all brushed. every racer had their own secret formula for breaking in their motors. Your method as you can tell from your test of water dipped vs. non-water dipped shows how much/little it helps. Every little bit helps. As we used to say; "It does not cost a lot to go fast. But it costs a Heck of a lot to go a little faster." Oh and you want to use the cheapest brake cleaner you can find. If it's too good it will have enough strength to melt the laquer on the motor windings. That not good for motor. (Use Cookie Monster voice on last sentence)

Just an FYI to all the new friend to this hobby. Take these videos for what they are. A revenue stream for the content creator. At the end of the day, they dont care if you destroy your shit. Per Traxxas directly. DO NOT water break-in your brushed motor! This is a method leftover from the racing days of old. Hard brush compounds paired with a brush that was not pre-cut like so many are now made this method a way of seating the brushes, "breaking in" the motor. Our motors do not need this, in fact, it causes more harm than good.

Back in the day I just used comm drops. I used to use Go Go Juice by Fantom. The main idea is to get the brushes to have maximum contact to the commutator for the most efficient current transfer. Put a couple of drop in before the race and you get some good power off the line and for the first 2 min of the race, especially in the matched cell NiCad days.

Lots of people asking why do this. Short answer is that this method gives a better contact patch between the commutator and brushes. Bigger contact patch in theory has less resistance which in theory gives more power. Water adds friction to help the break in go faster. You could do it without water but then the heat build up will damage the magnets and possibly cause more arc-ing between the brushes and the commutator. And yes this more of a ‘racer’ thing because Traxxas titan 550s are not rebuildable and by wearing the brushes you are shortening the life of the motor slightly. The upside is that the motors aren’t expensive to replace.

I have heard of it and have done it back in the early 90's also back then you could remove the brushes and springs. You could buy stiffer springs and we would cut part of the brushes and that would advance the timing. I used RORA spec motors back then. They were 24T. I did find cutting the brushes did help make the motor faster. Great video

Hey Mark, thanks for doing this! Now, when people doubt me, I can just tell them to check out this vid 👍. Btw, 2 minutes tops for the break-in. That cloudiness you're seeing is the brushes wearing away into nothingness, lol (you just need to seat them against the commutator). A properly broken in motor runs stronger, is more efficient, and lasts longer (despite what any 'experts' will tell you 🙄).
@jerryvolpini7987
@jerryvolpini7987 3 жыл бұрын
Further to this, the water acts as a conductor reducing the arcing and pitting caused by current passing from the brush to the commutator. The motor also stays cooler and water cleans the motor. As a result, the brush makes better contact so, it runs more efficiently and lasts longer.

I know this is an older video, but its worth a shot...I have a 1 week old Titan 12t that I installed in my Bandit. Running with a Traxxas 2s lipo. Adult operated. Occasional weekend user in my yard and on the street. One afternoon after about 5 min of running the Bandit started slowing down and I saw little sparks coming from inside the motor when I throttled and slight hint of ozone in the air too. Unplugged everything. Let it sit for a day. Checked the ESC, running in Sport mode, fresh battery and same thing. Only about >50% power from the motor, and little sparks and a metallic smell. What's happening (happened)?

Instead of waiting for a response, I decided to do your "water break-in" after watching someone else do the same thing calling it cleaning/maintenance of the Titan motors. The water turned black after a few seconds of running. So much debris and dirt in the water afterwards.

Carbon plus water makes acetylene gas. Although motor break in probably doesn’t produce enough carbon dust to do that. That’s how they powered miners lights

I have same question. Why not just run the car with wheels off ground or remove pinion. Dont understand what the water does?

The water conducts the electricity more efficiently reducing friction and pitting and seating the brush more evenly against the motor (called the commutator) for better performance and longer durability.

Trying to figure out the advantages of doing this 🤔 1. Biggest one I see is break-in particles instead of staying stuck to magnets come out in the water. 2. Stays cool in water while breaking in Anything else I’m missing??? I’ll have to try this. 🥳

Better contact of the brushes and the comutator and using the water keeps the surfaces cool and flushes out the cuttings as it smoothes the surfaces.

Can you water break in a used brushed motor?
@mdgdoc4284
@mdgdoc4284 3 жыл бұрын
Mitchell, yes you can do this to a used motor, but the purpose is to set the new brushes to the Armature. Internal workings of a brushed motor.
@jerryvolpini7987
@jerryvolpini7987 3 жыл бұрын
You can but there is no need to break in a used motor, the brushes are seated. Any advantage of properly breaking in a motor is lost once ran for a battery pack or two.

It's a good way to clean out a used motor. Go with Distilled water. To break in or clean.

Water break-in is to keep the brushes from burning or scarring the commutator during seat in time.. (5-7 min.) I don't use brake clnr. cuz it has too much residue I use contact (electric) clnr. like CRC and use oilite bushing lube for that 12t. very litle dont want to get the comm wet.
