Yes hills and curvy roads are the best place to break in an engine. It is best to not go 100%, while it's great for seating the rings it's not so great for all the other components on the bike, mainly the gearbox. It takes a little time to wear things in and it's best to not go so hard as to cause damage until they are. I generally stay around 50% throttle as a max for the first hundred miles and try to use each gear as much as possible, avoid high rpms for the first 4 or 500 miles as it helps nothing to wring it out and can only hurt. I do the first oil change early, say around 200 miles to get all the metal from the rings and gears seating out, do another at 5-600 then get onto the regular interval you use. I will swap to full syn at around 4/5K miles and roll on from there (synthetic oils are not good for breakin, they are too slippery).

I've just bought a ktm duke 790. I live in UK it's either raining or wet so in rain mode kept below 6000 revs and not used up and down quickshifter. As long as you don't 'lug it', it should be fine but each to their own. Keep up the great vids

Nice video as always J! I'm of the same belief as the mechanic at my dealership; do whatever, as long as you don't "bog" the engine and stay off the red line. Keep the RPM's moving appropriately. Maybe this is a fourth break in method. Thanks again, keep up the great work!

I cruised at a constant highway speed on one when I bought our 08 Gsxr 600 with 0 miles and it created a flat spot of buzzying and surging right at 75 to 80mph . The only bike I did that with and the only one I ever had a problem with. I had to sell it because it was so annoying and never went away. I now do just what you are doing, vary speed and gears and just ride. I just bought a new 2018 Aprilia Rsv4 Rf and will be breaking her in the same way

Will keep doing same oil until the odo hits 10,000 miles then i will start putting in Motul 7100 4T 10W40 with K&N 204 filters. When I bought my 2015 z1000 I just did a few heat cycles before I even rode it then a relatively hard brake in. No redline. Shes running like a champ👌I ve also heard its better to break in the engine and do the first oil change with regular oil vs synthetic.

Jaret, I broke in my 2016 XDiavel S similar to you except Dyno. Dyno break-in is a new concept to me. I ride soft for the first 50 (safety concerns), then ride increasingly harder until 600. Usually I take the bike out near the Shenandoah mountains to find hills. After 600 its "hold no bars", I ride as I would in DC metropolitan traffic. You have to or you will end up wearing a SUV as a hat; these drivers are aggressive. I ride to survive!!! Already survived one accident that destroyed my Suzuki M109R.

Modern bikes have amazing machining tolerances, really all you want to do is get a good ring and cylinder seal. This won't happen if you baby the bike too much. Don't let it labour in high gears but take it easy first few hundred miles. First oil change, then ride it normal. Race bikes often get run in on the dyno... I prefer a little road riding first though, gives you a chance to get used to it a little before the track!

I subscribe to the school of "once the engine is up to temp, ride it like you want to". Vary the RPMs on a twisty road, lots of engine braking and go gentle on the brakes. Once it's got 1500-2k miles on it then just do whatchalike.

What road is this on?
@janklan27403 жыл бұрын
Great vid. Around 10:30 you say you personally believe after a couple hundred miles the engine is broken in. One question: is this a bunch of opinions and personal beliefs, or is this something backed by some science/research? How much or little distance/revs/speed/temp is too much or out-of-bounds? If one rides 30 in 50 zone because one thinks "it's enough", that's fair enough, but the real limit is 20 miles above that self-imposed limit. So how do you find the limit? I assume the answer to that is "by breaking things"?
@JayDKB6 жыл бұрын
Good info is that a good strategy for cars?
@JaretCampisi6 жыл бұрын
I actually have no idea about car break ins...
@chrisredfield32406 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters so much with cars. Look how big the engine is vs the power it makes. Maybe a 2.0 turbo car making 400hp. You will probably fined things like turbo's gearboxes and throwing a rod etc will go before anything to do with the run in makes a difference. I find with a brand new car the engine just does not go that well anyway so it almost just protects itself
@Dempps6 жыл бұрын
Would you recommend this bike for someone that has limited experience riding? I had a Harley 1200 sportster with a stage 3 screamin' eagle kit on it but only put about 5k miles on it. I'm starting to fall in love with this bike though! Do you (or anyone in general) think it'd be an easy transition? Thanks for the feedback!
@JaretCampisi6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think you would be totally fine to transition from a 1200 sportster to this bike. I've ridden the sportster 1200 48 and I personally think the xdiavel is easier to ride even though its faster.
@cseets6 жыл бұрын
There's an urban ride mode which reduces the power, softens the throttle response and puts more abs and traction control until you get comfortable, it's a handy ride mode for the rain but would also help with the transition if you're concerned about the power

First love the videos ❤️❤️, secondly all bikes are tested before they leave the factory, they do so to make sure that the engines run properly and after that they reset the odometer to zero.

Soft breaking is mandatory. Always go with manufacturer guidelines as it states in the manual. Manufacturers spend millions on research and tests. Hardbreaking will break your bike if your very unlucky and anyone looking to buy your bike in future may avoid your bike if they know you rode it like you stole it😄
@gixxxer10006 жыл бұрын
It is very easy. If all manufactures in the world in (Germany, England, Italy, Japan), all say the same in their manuals, then there is truth in them. For the manufacturing tolerance debate, remember that engine performance (stress) also has been drastically increased.

Don't worry too much. As long as you don't exceed the RPMs for a prolonged time that are stated in the manual you shouldn't have a problem.
