Wanted to break in my Christensen Ridgeline and after reading through the manual, which has very specific instructions (clean after each shot 1st 10 rounds, then every 5 shots thereafter to 50 rounds, then within every 20 shots for the life of the barrel), so watching this helped as far as "real life" expectations vs paper manual.

Since modernpawn likes to throw high-end barrels manufacturers names around let look at what they said (from the manufacturer's websites): Bartlein - "There is no hard and fast rule for breaking in a barrel." and a ton of stuff before that they don't know either. Broughton - Nothing on their website about barrel break-in Hart - "We do not believe that a break in procedure is required with our barrels." Shilen - "Shilen, Inc. introduced a break-in procedure mostly because customers seemed to think that we should have one. By and large, we don't think breaking-in a new barrel is a big deal." That was from the high-end manufacturers themselves. Basically clean it when it's needed and you can't go wrong with that.

Since you are wrong and deserve this for acting like a troll: From Christensen Arms: BREAK-IN PROCEDURE 01 CLEAR BORE First make sure that the barrel is clean and free of any oil or solvents from the manufacturing process. Once clear, fire 2 three-shot groups. 02 BOREBRUSH With the bore guide inserted, run a solvent-soaked patch through the barrel, breach to muzzle, removing it at the muzzle. Repeat this with a new soaked patch 3 times or until no black is showing on the patch. Then scrub the barrel back and forth using the caliber-correct nylon brush soaked with solvent. Ensure the brush completely exits the muzzle and chamber before reversing direction. Repeat 20 times for a total of 40 passes through the barrel. Follow this step with a dry patch until it comes out clean and dry. 03 UNDERSIZED BOREBRUSH Next, using the undersized brush, run a solvent-soaked patch through the barrel, scrubbing back and forth for a total of 20 passes through the barrel. Again, ensure the patch exits both ends of the barrel before reversing direction. You will notice a blue tint on the patches from dissolving copper residue. Repeat until no blue/copper residue is found. Follow with dry patches until they come out clean and dry 04 SHOOT AGAIN Fire another 2 three-round groups for a total of 6 rounds. 05 REPEAT Repeat steps 1-4 until you have fired a total of 50 rounds. 50 rounds is usually sufficient to smooth out the surface of the barrel lining and “break in” your barrel. As your barrel breaks in, you will notice that it will clean faster and without using as many cleaning patches or solvent.

Man did that ever cost me alot especially all the ammo and the safari in Africa I had to send him on. Oh well it shoots sub moa on every continent but has some scratches on it.

All barrels break in at different rates and is WAY more than 20 or 30 rounds. Typically around 120-130 rounds. Clean once from new then hit the range. My rem 700 sps 30-06 went slowly from 1.5 moa to 3/8 moa @ 120 rounds while my tikka 300 wsm settled nicely @ 5/8 moa after 60 rounds. No intermittent cleaning required. When accuracy falls off then give er a scrub down

I also have years of experience as a machinist producing aerospace components and solid-fuel rocket motors. The truth is you're not changing a damn thing about that barrel. You can shoot it once and clean it, or you can shoot it 100 times and clean it, it doesn't matter. The barrel was either machined/heat treated properly from the factory, or it wasn't. The key to achieving the greatest accuracy is to simply shoot the rifle enough to understand which ammo is preferred and how the rifle groups with that ammo.

Copper Equilibrium As perfect as your new bore is, the metal is left with small imperfections from the manufacturing process. Rifles be come most accurate when the barrel has been seasoned well with copper. Copper is a much softer metal than your barrel. As it is heated up, copper deposits are “smoothed” into any imperfections (however minute) in the barrel. Over time, these copper deposits give your bore more consistency. A bronze bore brush for loosening carbon fouling and a few patches will clean the barrel nicely.

First you address the barrel. Ask the barrel if it's OK to stick a rod into it's breach. Next, you lube the rod. Some shooters like the dirty talk, but it's up to the individual to decide. Next, you guide the rod into the breach and slowly move the rod in and out. You will notice that the barrel will warm up and self lubricate. You know that you are doing it correctly, if this happens. Eventually the rod or the barrel will shoot. Sometime it happens at the same time. That would be best if you want to do it again in the future. Please give me a thumbs up and follow me on twatter.

I have always followed the shoot once, clean until I hit twenty rounds, then I shoot three, then clean to fifty rounds. With the exception of my Marlin 30 cal. Carbine, all my rifles will shoot 1 inch at hundred yards or better. All my rifles are entry level Winchester, Remington and Bushmaster.

Trying to find a gun shop that would take the time to do this for a customer is nonexistent in my neck of the woods. Although a good hunter would do this him/herself and become “one” with their harvesting tools...lol. By the way ....being a .300 win mag that rifle barely seemed to kick . Never "brake in" any barrels. Just shoot the dam thing..... ALOT. I put about 100rounds on the first outing with my Ruger precision and it has been shooting 3/4 to half MOA... 1 moa on a bad day.... With factory PRIME ammo.

Precision rifles are normally not test fired at the factory. They will be head spaced using gauges, but not fired. Generally only pistols are shot at the factory, and it is not normally for function, but for that stupid fired case registration, that by the way, has never solved a case. The rifles that are fired at the factory, normally get cleaned really well, then three shots fired (like the Weatherby range certified rifles).

Here in europe all firearms must be test shot before leaving the factory, they also test them with overpressured loads to proof mark them. ALL rifles (and handguns) must be tested to be safe. check out sako factory tour and you will see how they do it. oh and you dont have to "break in" a bolt action... thats an old myth, semis on the other hand need to be broken in to make them reliable.

Your deburing the rifling! Who is making the barrel im sure they inspect each one and the barrel is hardened...the first foot or so is whats holding the unburned powder...and the ammo your shooting makes a huge difference on group.

JB Bore paste with tornado brush on new barrel. Back and forth a whole bunch of times, 30x or more. then cleaning solvent, finally dry patch. Repeat 1 time. You're ready to shoot and break in is practically non-existent.

There are so many articles of barrel makers saying that breaking in is unnecessary as barrels are machine honed and rifled at factory and a bullet is not going to do a better job.. That being said, some barrel and rifle manufacturers (precision) have a break in procedure and if you don't do it, it can void the warranty. I know these are hand lapped and polished so it should even make less of a difference. It sounds like these manufacturers are just using this break in myth as an excuse to void warranties and rid themselves of some level of financial responsibility. As for precision barrels, we are living in a good time for precision shooting. Modern machining makes almost all barrels precision these days. I just bought a cheep mossberg patriot in 300 win mag and am getting .5 inch groups at 100 yards. Sub MOA is the new norm. All that being said, I do my own voodoo break in. Shoot 1 round, run a patch. Shoot 10, run a patch, shoot 10 more, run a patch. I think break in would have more effect on landings in the free bore where carbon builds up than the actual rifling. +1 for break in is a myth but a little voodoo on ones rifles does help the shooter have peace of mind..

Sure. Expecially button rifled stainless barrels. I really never bother with break in on cold hammer forged barrels or chrome lined barrels. But it generally will not hurt anything.

Sand is harder than steel, it will scratch it. Metal shavings from chambering/machining are the same hardness as the barrel, they will imbed and or scratch as well.

BTW if you never been in a gunsmith shop, a sandblaster is standard equipment. It goes like this: Barrel is fitted to action, barreled action is then SAND blasted for consistent surface (hopefully bore is taped off to keep it clean) then it will be painted or coated. No guarantee that sand (or aluminum oxide blasting media, think sapphire) did not get in the barrel.

There is an absence of objective data regarding barrel break-in. No one has done enough testing with enough different barrels to provide objective data that proves their process. However, such a study would require multiple rifles from multiple manufacturers including different caliber and different methods of rifling etc. Let’s say you chose 6.5 Creedmoor and 28 Nosler calibers. You would need multiples of each from multiple suppliers plus you would need to cover the bases for barrel rifling techniques. Let’s say you did that. Which techniques would you use? How many identical rifles of each caliber and barrel type would you need to establish comparable data? What ammo would you use? What cleaning products? What objective data would you collect? It’s not hard to see why this hasn’t been done. I know of a professional shooter who only uses the best barrels and doesn’t do any break in, but would this apply to less expensive barrels without had lapped bores? Which brings us back to black magic and as many different opinions as there are experts.

IF the barrel bore is perfectly polished, then no barrel break in is needed... That is a big IF. Humans make barrels. It is very possible for event he best of the best barrel manufacturer to miss a spot or not complete finish an area. The other major problem occurs when you buy a perfectly polished barrel and then a gunsmith sticks a reamer in to cut the chamber. The throat (which is the normally culprit for excessive fouling) has machine marks ACROSS the grain from the lapping direction. The throat will still need to be broken in on a perfect polish bore. Unless the gunsmith that cuts the chamber on your perfect barrel has a perfect fresh magic reamer that leaves zero tool marks at the throat, you will need some degree of break in at the throat. 15-20 rounds and a few cleanings does not seem like too much of a hassle and is insignificant to barrel life. IMHO its worth a box of ammo to avoid a potential problem.

modernpawn fwiw gale mcmillan stated that he's seen far more barrels damaged by cleaning rods than from anything else. something to think about. for those of you who say a break-in "it can't hurt", it can. you're shortening your barrel's life. 15-20 rounds off a barrel that has a life span of 1000 rounds is 2.5%. some guys have a silly break-in regimen of 100 rounds. that is 10% of the total life of a 300 win mag barrel. again. if gale mcmillan says you don't need a barrel break in, you don't. same reason why when richard lee states that he never saw clean brass shoot any more accurately than dirty brass, you should probably listen. because he just might know what he's talking about :)

It is true that many people f up there barrel trying to clean it. But if you can't properly clean a rifle, you probably can't shoot 1/2in groups either... If you listen to the video, I was able to sight the rifle in at 100yards, shoot two test groups, check clean cold bore, break the rifle in, and chromo the rifle with only 16 rounds total. Again, I don't feel like it was a waste of barrel life, time, or money.

I've owned many many rifles. Got a 400 dollar savage i just bought. Shoots as good as your christianson arms barrel. Butches bore shine. On a new polished barrel? Really? Its your money bro. Breaking in a gun does more damage than good sometimes. Solvents will destroy that polished surface. 95 percent of accuracy problems are the result of the shooter, ammo, or loose hardware. Proper technique, with good setup and proper ammo should produce sub moa 90 percent of the time

Got a tc compass 7mag. Savage 12fv in 6.5 creedmoor. Both sub minute with hornady off the shelf ammo. Savage will shoot 1/2 inch groups with 5 shots. Tc will do 3/4 when i do my part. Only cleaned the rifles once when i bought them and every other time i go to the range. Introducing chemical agents to clean the bore is harmful to the barrel. So i do it as little as possible. Never suffered any accuracy from any of my rifles. This guy is full of it. And ga makes some cool rifles, specially the paint jobs and triggers.
