I just snagged a brand new set of Vaughn ProSpec V5 9500 leg pads, so your tutorial will be a big help getting them broken in. I've never had a brand new set of really good pads, so this video is very helpful! One question - do you recommend the same break-in process for a heat moldable catcher? Thanks!
@ourgoalielife11 жыл бұрын
Fantastic! It's a great question about the moldable catcher, and honestly I've never used one so I can't be certain. I'd venture to say yes, but ultimately you should probably break it in using the manufacturer's recommendations. Good luck!

@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Johnston Absolutely. Just be aware that I only sit on my pads for 20-30 minutes, and wedging them under a table for hours can have an adverse impact on the foams. Don't let them sit too long!

@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Hmmm.. is it a pro model? If it's not pro I know sometimes they can be harder to break in. Keep trying this method, though.. sometimes it takes 2-3 times, though I usually just have to do it once. Also try using it RIGHT after the 24-36 hour period.. that'll help break it in.

I'm not usually a very picky goalie when it comes to equipment. I can adapt easily to almost any pad or glove... but when it comes to the chest protector though, that's another story. I played for the past 15 years with the same chest & arms because I was so comfortable in it... but a time came when I was *really* due for a new one. So I went out and bought a brand new Reebok one. I tried it on in the store, spoke with the employee a lot, he gave me tips and tricks, so I was convinced and decided to purchase it. Now, with 12 games played, I still find it *very* stiff and restrictive, especially for my arms... Got any tips on how to "break-in" chest & arms?? I hope it will get better because I feel like I just wasted $350!
@benyurovitsky411011 жыл бұрын
i got a chest protector from a friend that he had used for a year, playing 4-5 times a week. it is still very stiff for some reason, also in the arms.
@ourgoalielife11 жыл бұрын
I had a similar issue where the arms of my chesty wouldn't break in, and I eventually got tired of it and put my old arms on my new chesty, lol. Honestly all you can do is continue using it to break them in. I have tried washing it in a washer, and it broke it in a little more without any damage, but really I just recommend using it so it keeps the entire life of the chesty instead of decreasing it unnaturally.

@SatoriEarth9 жыл бұрын
Pretty close to much of my break in processes. With the blocker I like to remove the inside and slightly flare the outter bottom edge of the board. I find it gives more range of motion and flexibility in paddle down. Allowing an easier time of extending the arm out to cut off passes etc. Also when doing the closure setting of the trapper I like to leave a small dowel in the palm crease... I'm not going to get into the countless custom modifications (with pretty much all of my gear) I do in addition to the break-ins.
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
SatoriEarth Very cool. I have a friend who does a dowel in the pocket of the glove, and you get a really awesome Lundy-effect. I'm going to try it!

The only time I've gotten the crustiness is when I haven't used my gloves for like 3-4 weeks and they're very well used. I'm thinking the newer materials in the Reebok/CCM gloves don't get the crustiness, but I could be wrong. The only thing I've found so far is to re-wet the glove before I use it. You might want to try putting your gloves near a dehumidifier and see if that helps soften the leather instead of drying it out. Doesn't hurt to try!

Hey Tommy, About two or three months ago, I bought a Bauer Supreme One.7 catch glove. I love the glove, but I am really struggling to get it to break in so that I can easily open and close it. I have searched dozens of websites and videos, and tried numerous methods like the hot water method and tying skate lace around it overnight. These techniques have helped my glove break in pretty well, but I can't get my glove to the point where I can easily open and close it with no spaces for the puck to pop out. If you have any other tips or reasons for why I can't get my glove to finish breaking in, please let me know. I AM DESPERATE! Thanks, David
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
David Aspinall Wow.. if it's not broken in by 2-3 months, sounds like there's something wrong with the glove. Which, a One.7 is a lower end glove, but I would think it should be broken in by now. To be honest, if you've tried all those methods and there's STILL space for the puck to come out, that tells me one of three things: 1. it's not a quality glove; 2. it's broken in wrong; or 3. well, I forgot what 3 was.. but if I remember I'll try to help you, lol. Either way, I think the answer unfortunately is to get a different glove. :\
@davida12509 жыл бұрын
GoalieCreaseNet Alright thanks Tommy. Also, I only have hockey in the winter, so its really like i've had the glove for about a month (the amount of time I actually used it on the ice), so maybe it just needs to get more action in the right enviroment. @thenoobcube29359 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering how much a full used set would cost
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
+A-Z Extras I think that's absolutely the smart way to go. Goalie is a very expensive position, even if you buy everything used. Really, you're probably looking at $1000 AT LEAST to start, even if it's used. Depending on the size of the pads, you're looking at $400-$500 for legs and gloves, at least $250 for chest and pants, $100 for skates, $100 for stick(s), $250-$400 for a good mask, plus $50 for a jock or jill. I don't think I'm missing anything there, but as you can see it's quite the investment. If you have a friend who has an extra set, see if you can use theirs.. I often do that for friends! Good luck!

awesome hey when a goalie gets traded to another team how are some able to have new equipment and a new team color mask but some have to wear there previous teams colors on the pads do some teams have equipment on hand when the player arrives? also what does an nhl goalie do with his old equipment when traded and do goalies change masks often? in sorry for all the questions but you seem like you may be the guy to ask thank you for your time!
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
+Spellman Pat Most of the time they don't have new gear right away, but sometimes they can use PadWrapz or PadSkinz to cover up some of the color, and sometimes they'll use a white mask for a while while the new one gets painted. As for what NHL goalies do with old equipment, it depends on the goalie and team. Some teams sell the equipment at team sales at the end of the year, while others send it back to the manufacturers, who sell them to retailers. Hope that helps!

@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
thegoaliegod31 I did these with my XLTs and they worked out BEAUTIFULLY! Kept a lot of stiffness that I like while still breaking in those breaks a bit. Tommy, How do you fix the torsional flex in pads. Mine are newer haven't really been broken in but i am getting some torsional flex.
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Kiraly A couple things: generally torsional flex is due to two things: breaking them in wrong and inappropriate strapping. So, to fix torsional flex it may require two things: reshaping the pads so they no longer naturally flex that way, then strapping your pads in a way that doesn't encourage torsional flex. Depending on how flexible/broken-in they are, it may be nearly impossible, but that's your best bet. What you don't want to do is twist them the opposite way; that won't work and will make it worse. Just try to shape the pads back into a frontal position and then strap them so they stay that way and won't be encouraged to flex inward. Hope that helps, Kevin!
@kevinkiraly71139 жыл бұрын
Thanks tommy also I'm wondering if my pants are making it hard for me to butterfly and actually perform slides. I have the old itech 4.8 s and they extend a little past my knee so they get caught up in the area where the pad meets the leg pad and inhibits my rotation. Do you think that could be a cause ?
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it definitely sounds like they're too long, and, if I remember correctly, the 4.8s were a very long pant to begin with. I've had that in the past when I attempted to move up to XL Koho 590 pants back in the day, and it went horribly wrong. So I don't doubt whatsoever that the pants could also be a contributor.

Question, I just got Bauer one.7 leg pads, butterfly style pads. They also have my flex system, would you recommend breaking them in life this. Also this is my first pair of real pads, so what is the pros of doing this. Will it help seal the five hole more ?
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
What it does is allows more flexibility at the breaks so the tops can seal in the middle of your five hole. One.7s are pretty low in the Bauer line, so breaking them in TOO much could result in a much lower life expectancy from the pads, so just keep that in mind,
@Hunter1410 жыл бұрын

One of the best ways to break in your catcher is the same as with baseball gloves, and thats turn it inside out as best you can and wrap it up that way for a day. The reason is because it stretches the palm leather a bit. Normally other break in methods only focus on compressing and creasing the palm and stretching the back of the hand. Gotta get that leather stretching both ways to soften it up!
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Chris J I would absolutely not recommend trying to turn it inside out the same way you can with a baseball glove. The biggest reason why is a baseball glove is all leather; a goalie trapper also has foams and plastics inside that can and will break if you twist or do things abnormal to it. By turning it inside out you could very well be breaking the padding in the palm which, while you do need to break it in, you definitely don't want to rip anything out, either. It may work for you, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it!
@IPv6Freely10 жыл бұрын
GoalieCreaseNet Understood, you make good points with all the extra plastics and foams. Forget I said anything and I'll be sure to not do that when my new glove arrives Friday :)
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Chris J LOL. Hey, if it works for you, by all means.. but I don't think I could risk it! I have two gloves coming in next week.. might look at some different methods of breaking them in.
@markyeap259810 жыл бұрын
I'm using the glove technique right now and I was wondering if anyway I could harm it or damage it because I certainly don't want that to happen, I have the CCM eflex pro and I put the glove closed under my bed so something is on it really good and should I leave it there for 24 hours and then with it open 24 hours? It was pretty much worked in but I want it fully anyway thanks for the video!
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Mark Yeap The only "damage" I've done to my glove doing this was I accidentally dented the thumb well, but funny enough it miraculously came back out after a day of resting it. I'd just make sure you're placing the couch or bed on a part of the glove that won't dent. I'd definitely recommend the 24/24 method, closed then open. Hope that helps!

By doing those break in techniques, can the materials be damaged somehow, meaning they loose "protective elements"? Just wondering..I personally never done anything like that before....
@ourgoalielife11 жыл бұрын
Nope, not at all. As long as you don't over flex the pads or do things you really shouldn't, then you should be fine. :)

Hey Tommy I'm thinking about buying some ccm premier R1.5 seniors they come with no breaks which is just fine for me as I play mostly butterfly style. I was just wondering if I can use the same pad break in technique you used in this video despite the different brakes.
@ourgoalielife8 жыл бұрын
Great question! Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. Because there are no breaks, you might accidentally crack the pad on the inside, and then you've ruined your pads. :\
@nathandelara88799 жыл бұрын
I've wondered for a while what do the bumps knee level on the pads do
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Nathan de Lara The knee rolls are very soft, so they add some cushion for pucks that hit in the knee area and they'll drop right down in front of the goalie so he or she can smother the puck quickly.
@JRgamerrz9 жыл бұрын
Did you break in you reebok pads the same way or do you do it differently as I have none which have no external break compared to my ccm with double external break
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
+Chaldian Yup! I break in all of my pads using the same method. The only thing that changes occasionally is that I might have to do it a couple times if there's no external break or if it's an extra stiff pad. Hope that helps!
@JRgamerrz9 жыл бұрын
+GoalieCreaseNet yep thanks for the response any tips on changing from ccm pads to reeboKs other than the obvious more butterfly style of reeboks?
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
There's really very little problem changing between CCMs and Reeboks because the construction is mostly the same, the main difference being in the foams within the pads. So then the only real tip is to get used to the differences between the foams, with the CCM allowing soft rebounds that stay in front of you and the Reeboks using harder foam that rebounds the puck off. It's more of a mindset than getting used to the pads. :) Hope that helps!

+Matt “lax” Walker Yup! That's the Sumo. It is pretty expensive, and one of the seams ripped in the first two weeks, but since then it's been a great bag for me. @ourgoalielife8 жыл бұрын
+brian rivers Good question, as the one.7s are "lesser quality" pads. If I were you, I'd still do it the exact way I always have, but that's easy for me to say. In that, the only thing I wouldn't do is one thing I purposefully DIDN'T show you guys.. I bend my pads backwards. I probably wouldn't do that with a lesser pad, but with pros it's usually fine.

Hi Tommy. Thanks for your video. Just a question : I am about to buy a new set of Vaughn Ventus LT80, so do you think your breaking-in method would work for the Ventus leg pads, which have no breaks and are quite stiff? Thanks!
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Alexandre Miletitch Good question! I've never done it on a pair of Vaughns, but I don't see why not!
@alexandremiletitch744710 жыл бұрын
GoalieCreaseNet Thanks for the feedback ! My question is : the single break of your CCMs allows them to withstand the pressure of you sitting on them (no offense ;-), while on the Vaughns, there is no break to absorb the extra pressure. Do you think there is a risk to damage the pads by sitting on them?
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Don't most Vaughns have a single internal/external break? Even if there's no external break, you can still do this with an internal break. Now, if there's no break at all, then I don't think you'd want to break them in at all, as obviously then you're looking for a crazy stiff pad I would never recommend anyone try wearing, haha!

The water didn't work should I try pucks?
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Well.. I'd try water again. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times, but typically only once. Also, try wearing it RIGHT after the 24-36 hour period. That'll help break it in.

I got a old glove brains glove which im trying to stay open by wedging but I feel once I put my hand Inside it naturally closes to about half way which obviously no good, do you have any tips?
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
scotty maltrez I'd probably try the glove break-in method I describe here.. run hot water through it, then do 12 hours closed and 24 hours open (as opposed to 24/12). I'd also recommend applying pressure to the BACK of the hand instead of staying open by wedging something in the front. See if that works.. let me know if you still have trouble! Good luck!

Can you do this with stiff style pads like Bauer hyper lights?
@ourgoalielife Жыл бұрын
Good question. I've done this with stiff CCMs, but I've never done it with stiff Bauers. Since this video was made so long ago and I haven't tried the Bauers, I can't guarantee you it'll work the same way, and it might even harm your pad, though that might be a stretch. This method is really meant for either flexible or hybrid style pads, not really stiff ones that don't have any internal and/or external breaks. Hope that helps!

This works fine for those, too. I've done this on flatter face style pads such as the XLTs, Premiers, and SubZeros. Works like a charm each time.

So i bought used pads from a buddy of mine. When i go into the butterfly, the top of my pads dont seal to the ice, leaving and area for the puck to slide right through. How do i fix this?
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
+Jason Thomas That's a pretty common issue that's typically evident of them being strapped too tightly. Try loosening them up a bit, especially around the top of the calf and the knee, and you might find them sealing a bit better. If there's an elastic band at the knee, that might be too tight, too. Some pads do just come up a bit, so it's good to make sure your stick is always properly placed in the five hole, and hopefully none sneak through. Good luck!
@jasonthomas139 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! I recently switch from Reeboks XLT to the Brian's Gnetik pro. With the Reeboks, I would place elastic band down at the calf so it wasn't wrapped around the back of my knee. I will try the same with the Gnetiks.
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Definitely try the same and that might help a bit. I know it did on my SubZero 6.0s!

I keep trying to break in my Catcher and I use the method u say in this video and at the end of it when it's dry it's still stiff
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Austin hopkins Usually by the end of the method it's still damp, so since yours is dry it makes me wonder if you didn't put enough water on and in it or in the right areas. Try putting the hot water in it for two minutes instead of one and see if that helps any. You can also do this multiple times; with some gloves I've done it 2-3 times, but usually with a Reebok I only have to do it once (if that).
@photographikly10 жыл бұрын
Just curious, is there any other way to break in a glove without having to pour hot water in to it? I'm a bit aprehensive of doing that.
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Use it. (But, really, there's nothing wrong with the water method.)
@ourgoalielife11 жыл бұрын
For my chesty, pants, and skates, my only break-in is simply using them. I've heard stories about putting them in the bathroom/shower, wear them around the house.. honestly, none of those work. To break something in, you need a combination of wetness to break down the hard fibers, and you need movement to break down the fibers in the direction in which you'll be using it. Simply getting it wet won't work, nor will simply moving it. Your best bet is wearing it in a game.
@CODclipper2910 жыл бұрын
If you run it under hot water will it get really hard and then its impossible to close?
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Ethan Harela Nope; I've never had it get hard after running it under hot water. If anything, it breaks down the materials just enough so that you get a little extra flexibility/mobility out of it.

i read somewhere that if you open your glove and put presure on it (putting it under your couch), it'll create a bump in the palm area which will prevent the glove to close properly. I didn't think it was true at first but with my last glove, i used to put a lot of presure on it to open it like that, and i realized not long ago that there was actually a bump. I can't close it properly anymore. even if i try all the methods. Be careful about that...
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
+the ringuette goalie 101 Very weird. Don't this with probably 15 gloves now and never gotten a bump. I know what you're talking about since I've seen it on some gloves, but usually they're lower end gloves; not usually the pro ones, though I think I saw a Warrior pro G2 with a pretty pronounced bump. Anyway, good luck!
@shirinesleiman8779 жыл бұрын
+GoalieCreaseNet my glove is the reebok L9 IN, it's not a pro one and it's not the best quality out there, that's probably the reason. Thanks though :)
@ourgoalielife9 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh, see, that makes perfect sense, then. I don't know what it is about those gloves; it could be that the cheaper materials they use end up reacting to break-in methods differently. Well good luck out there!

GoalieCreaseNet That's what I do, it's kinda hard though
@MICBACONATOR10110 жыл бұрын
The reason the top of the pads lift up is usually because people make their pads to tight and you can also bake ur catch glove in a skate oven for 3-5 minutes. Also use baby powder for glove and blocker.
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
MICBACONATOR101 Unless the glove specifically says to put it in an oven, I don't recommend doing that. There are plastics in the glove that, under stress and heat, can break, melt, or mold differently than intended, and then you'd have a glove that doesn't work at all.
@MICBACONATOR10110 жыл бұрын
GoalieCreaseNet Thats why you only do it for a little while. One of the head guys at Bauer told me this when I was a kid, he said it would work for any company.
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
MICBACONATOR101 I wouldn't recommend it. Not every manufacturer is the same or uses the same materials in the same way. Hey, it's your gloves, but it's not something I'll be recommending.

How do you fix "Torqtional flex" if it occurs?
@ourgoalielife10 жыл бұрын
Great question! I wish I had a better answer for you, but honestly I think the only thing you can do is try to mold your pad so that it bends more appropriately instead of with the torsional flex. If you're noticing a lot of torsional flex while you're playing, consider loosing your straps a bit or loosening the toe ties. Good luck!
