How To Break In Stiff 2mm or 3mm Kendogu - Shaping the Kendo Armour.
Do you have stiff 2mm or 3mm bogu ? Is it uncomfortable to wear ? This video may be of help to you.
I demonstrate two methods to "Break In" your men fast and to the correct shape for your head. This will allow the Men to be tied on correctlly and more comfortably.
The first method was shown to me at a seminar in Dublin hosted by the Irish Kendo Federation by Junichi Tashiro Sensei Kyoshi Hachidan. Tashiro Sensei is a budogu professional and Yoroi armour producer for collectors and films and so on. So he takes presentation very seriously indeed but crucially he understands the design intention behind each peice of the armour and how it should be fitted and measured for optimam comfort and protection.
The second method I learned from a younger Japanese Kenshi who's armour was donated to our club and was tied up in the manner I demonstate in this video. I used this method to shape my men personally as I had learned this prior to meeting Tashiro Sensei.

This method is brilliant, my men was already decently shaped but with this is will look even better. It'll also help me shape my son and sister's bogu, those are completely new.

Great video! I bought a second hand bogu set. It's nearly new, but it wasn't stored properly, so I'm looking foward to giving it the right shape.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found the video useful. I hope you're bogu serves you well. Yes they often aren't stored very well when they come up for sales second hand but if its near new then it should be straightforward to rectify. It's harder when they've been like that for years and years.

My men Dare is too long and going upwards. Can I cut it?

I wouldn't advise that. If they're so long as to be unmanageable then there's a good chance the men is also too big for your head. If you cut them, that'll destroy the men and it'll cost too much to have them shortened by a workshop because that would be very labour intensive. If they're really way too long, I'd sell the men and order a new one that fits better. As for then sticking up, that's what this video will help you address. It also helps you get the fitting right.
