1) Have parents who can pay for your fancy top tier uni. 2) Become a part of Ivy or Oxbridge Cosa Nostra. 3) After you get the job make sure that other guys from non-target schools are not getting in.

Are you in undergrad? A ton of networking and reach out to your alumni. If you're a sophomore, now's the perfect time to start.. a lot of banks do events over the summer and start interviews around when the fall semester starts. I was in New York, the BBs and Elite Boutiques are receptive to international kids - so Moelis, JP, Credit Suisse. Have a decent GPA and some extra curriculars. Helps if you're from a target, just because there are going to be more alumi at these banks

@@natnaeltesgay1558 That's solid. I've heard Western is a target in Canada. A lot of colleges let a student club manage a small part of their endowment, probably a few 100K - if you can get into that club it'll give you a decent idea of what coverage group you want to be in and by the time recruiting comes around you'll have a leadership position at the club.

I'd also try to get a freshman or sophomore summer internship in finance, either in Canada or the US. The bigger places will have internship postings that you can apply to directly on their websites but even a smaller non-paid finance internship your first summer will help you land a role where you want the next summer. Being able to speak to prior experiences in finance shows real interest and makes you a stronger candidate. It's great that you're already thinking about this!

Undergraduate degree in Finance, but I have colleagues that did things like art history or the pre-med track.
