You don't have to do like I do... use a Dewalt Angle Grinder to cut a worn out Nicholson file to make a Flint And Steel, Steel. You can simply break the very hard and very brittle file with a hammer and finish the build with common everyday tools that you already have around the house. Let me show you. lol i find it ironic that your talking about being careful of your eyes, while going "im gonna close my eyes on impact" great content thankyou. also the pilot hole shows you know what your doing.

I have a old file but it’s a lot wider,🤔
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
If the file is 14” long it’s the same width as another one of my good steels.

Hi sir, one question with this method: do the teeth at the sides of the file impact the quantity of sparks that a quartz is able to produce? I've recently tried it, giving it a few tries with both flint and quartz, and some sparks appear; but not much. Initially I thought maybe my file could have a low carbon content, but could the problem be the teeth, if not filed down?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl11 ай бұрын
Yes, you have to grind them off. They grab the Chert's sharp edge and break it off right when the edge "should be" scraping up the steel as far as possible.

@@DavidWestBgood2pplohhh, ok, thanks. I'll try to file the edges down then.
@jasonacyofficial Жыл бұрын
So you just smooth 1 side? Is that so you’ll have two different textures to strike off of?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
No, I did 500 grindings on the cinder block and it didn’t get it smooth enough, at that. So I didn’t try to smooth the other side.

Was there a large enough other half of that file to try to make a small knife?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
yes
@jasonjohnson6344 Жыл бұрын
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I hope you try your hand at grinding it into a knife. I don’t have any experience with it myself but it would be interesting to see what you might come up with. Seeing if a file really can be shaped into a decent, small bushcraft knife without being heat treated too. ✌️

I have a question, do you use quartz stone to make fire, since flint stone is very difficult to find in my country?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl22 күн бұрын
We don't have Flint or Chert around here either. I buy the pieces you see me use on this channel. Like you, we only have Quartz.. See my flint and steel playlist for those videos.

Hey there David, Should I always file the ridges off of the sides of the file I'm going to use for a flint striker?

Please show us good safety practices Dave! Closing your eyes won't protect them from flying pieces. What if somebody watching your channel followed your "do as I say, not as I do" advice and got hurt. If you tell us to wear goggles set the example. For your good my friend. Love your channel material!

Thumbnail looks like you are using a file for a splint with that black tape on there....haha! I guess a guy could belt sand that edge to pretty it up....but you did great! Now to find some flint stone
