Funny thing is I am going to breakup with a therapist because she has started giving way too much info about what’s going up with her life taking up my hour I paid for. I don’t pay for a friend.

She uses "I want to open up my marriage" as an example. Wow. I bet she encourages open relationships. I feel like all therapists push open relationships.

Why does the role play character speak with a crazy vocal fry and say “like” 77 times a minute tho 😩

Does vocal fry hurt your throat? Gargling every word seems like it would make me cough .

A therapist should be like a coffee date with a good friend? If you have another human being that you are that close to, comfortable with, 100% trusting, then what do you need a therapist for? This therapist makes an assumption that tells me she is certainly not aligned with me if not many others. Most people needing therapy have no idea what that kind of friendship even means so how are they supposed to find a therapist who matches that? The major reason for leaving a therapist is money! They are expensive and the help takes a very long time. Maybe it's good to set a time limit based on, if not money, then a mutually agreed on pausing time based on a defined point of progress or actual date. At that point you can renegotiate or pause. Seems to me it would establish an incentive to progress during the time allotted, give a real try to come to terms with whatever you are wrestling with. Pausing would also free up the therapist to see other people in need; the waiting lists are disappointingly long and sometimes too late.

I actually appreciated that analogy...having been someone who's tried therapy for year with different therapists before I found the one I finally "clicked with". Maybe would have come off better if she'd said: like a coffee date with a good friend who gives great advice and shares their own helpful tools to getting through life!

@@claytonarbo3142 You are making the very same assumption. If someone has never had a good friend, much less one who gives good advice and tools to use, coffee date or not, how can the analogy make any sense to them?

Close friends don't (and shouldn't!) serve the same role as a licensed therapist, I think the guest is just saying that you should have a natural, comfortable rapport with your clinician.

@@juliacarney Well, I do understand that, but as a professional she should be more inclusive of all types of people, not just neurotypicals. You can't know if you are comfortable unless you spend a good deal of money and time with the one you choose. Then you have to start all over with another, risking time and money again.

@@juliacarney This! You probably don't actually want to discuss everything with your best/close friends that you discuss with your therapist. For the purpose of analogy, think of your therapist as a doctor: even if your best friend were also a doctor, you wouldn't want to blur those lines. You don't want to talk to your best friend about gross body stuff or have your best friend checking out your insides--you want a doctor who can shoot you straight about what's ailing you because it's their job, and that distinction is important in this kind of relationship. Same with a therapist.

The key “therapy should feel like a coffee date with a friend where you get into deep conversation.” Stop paying therapists and get friends to talk to.

Many people struggle to develop the trust and intimacy necessary for deep friendships. Therapy is extremely useful for many people. Please don’t stigmatize people who seek therapy!

Wow this therapist says some people stay with their therapist through multiple relationships??? How long is she talking?? It's so expensive imagine how much money that is. Poof! I really think therapists want money and easy regular clients so I can't imagine them telling a client they didn't need therapy anymore.

That could be true in some cases, however, it could also be the opposite: people with complex cases that are lifelong illnesses. She also didn't say how frequently they are meeting with the client, it could be monthly. Tldr: lots of assumptions.
