Ken, watching you is like talking to an old friend!! I would say that I taught myself how to sing. I sang to myself ever since I could remember, it's like I had a voice inside of my head that I heard and strived to sound like and I practiced until I sounded just like it. Fortunately, my parents put me in every opportunity to sing growing up, and I had many great mentors along the way. In my twenties I was really shy about my talent and too afraid to shine, I continued to practice in private with my music mentors that became great friends and networked with the best local talent. Now that I'm in my early thirties, I'm working on getting myself out there more because there is truly nothing in this world I love more than singing. I was born for it. Watching your videos reminds me of all the things I already know, or instinctually know and don't know how to express. One of my best friends and greatest encouragers died last year, not only do I miss my great friend but I miss having him around for his broad music experience and expertise. I've never really had a 1-on-1 vocal coach and I hope one day I could go through your program. Until then I come to your videos for reminders and I love watching your other students progress. Thank you for all the wonderful information

Kick-ass explanation Ken. Thank you for your tireless and dogged chasing out of the truth with regard to vocal training and teaching and the flat out regurgitation that takes place by some of these, what I would consider outright phonies. Your ability to thoroughly and expertly explain the mechanics of singing but also the subleties in a way that is sublimely simple and clear is telling. The fact that you are then able to demonstrate the techniques and sound amazing doing it sets you apart and above the aforementioned. I could go on and on, as your credentials are extensive and documented but I don't want you to get a big head Ken! 😄🤭 I'm SO kidding of course! Keep on rocking Ken, your amazing brother!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Can you please help me on understanding the movement needed? Thank you and I love the course so far, rock on brother

Hi! It is a lot like going to the bathroom. Number two. There is also an element of the stomach protruding out when you take the breath before “going number two“. You will also feel a sensation at the pelvic floor kind of like you’re urinating at the same time. I know this sounds gross and it’s not literally like this but it’s a really good approximation. Did you do the set up exercises in volume one and were you able to maintain volume while doing the set up exercises because this could be a clear indicator not only to help you feel what it supposed to feel like but also the strength required. In addition, when you’re lying flat down on your back on the floor, you can literally feel yourself take belly breaths and you can exhale with as much strength out of your abdomen and this will also approximate the sensation. Let me know what you think.
@maxsmoviechannel2025
@maxsmoviechannel2025 Жыл бұрын
@@kentamplin thank you Ken I will retry those situp exercises and try to really pinpoint the sensation. I was trying everything even bracing the abdominals as if I was about to take a punch (as I see that happening while using the bathroom) I’m going to redo the exercises until I understand it

I wish I could just be with you right now. Do not get me wrong. I am totally confused. I've been taking lessons with a new coach for 6 months now. Sometimes I'm not completely satisfied. But then I also have great moments. Sometimes he just doesn't hear me when I make mistakes. But I can feel it. I just lack some information. And then i should keep my mouth small? And then i should keep my mouth small? If I told that to Brent Smith , he would ask me, Hey, how should I be able to sing Cut the Cord live on stage without? (he is my fav singer) The demonstration you showed how to breathe is so much more understandable. I have been taking continuous singing lessons for 8 years now and also sometimes did not have very good coaches. (what I thought at the beginning) Many remain in their positions and do not continue their education. I worked with a coach ( he is a good one, but his education is limited too ) for a year and even he bought your course to educate hisself. Some say I should breathe in the belly but also in the ribs at the same time? Then another says to breathe in the stomach and hold the position like this? Sorry but that tightens my throat. It is incredible that I am still sitting on this topic after so many years. Yes i have your course. Too bad, you live so far away. Thanks for all what you do Ken !!

Thanks Ken, another great video. I'm a serial yawner when I sing, I figured the cause is from my breathing technique, but never learnt how to fix it. If I sing low notes (say a G note from the low E string on the guitar) I can pretty much induce a yawn on demand.

Ken, if you read this... can you answer how many singers that are considered great singers are gifted with a naturally good vocal system as say compared to someone who just has a lot of good training. I guess my real question is, how do you know if someone has a really good instrument and just needs training to become truely great? what are the qualities of a good vocal instrument?

I'm starting to believe that no person alive is a born singer. Just like any other "talent" they just practice a crazy amount and work hard at it. Coming from someone so tone deaf it's unreal and now after about like 2 years of intense practice people started telling me how naturally "talented" and so lucky I am. Nah

Hello, Ken! Thanks once more for the amazing videos you put up. I have been doing many of your vocal excercises in the last two months and they help me improve. Your points on breath are great, for example I really like how you mention that it _is_ good to use strenght in your abdomen to support the singing - because I have heard people speaking against it, but I know it helps me drive my singing from my diaphragm, not from my vocal chords. I would have a question though: what do you think about working out and singing? I used to go to the gym quite a bit (4× a week, being quite in shape) but I have noticed that when I work out a lot, I tend to struggle with my singing as my vocal chords feel tired all the time. Do you think this may be caused by breathing through the mouth when excercising, therefore drying out and weakening my vocal chords (as you mentioned in the video)? Or perheaps a lot of blood rushing into the vocal chords as the entire body is kind of "tightened" and under a lot of stress? Or just by my core muscles (or the entire body) being tired from the workouts? Would you have any tips how to alleviate this issue and do sports and singing together? I am asking you because I have noticed that you talk about sports quite often and you seem to know quite a lot about it. And I really like how you can make comparisons between sports and singing, having knowledge about both worlds.

Excellent tutorial Mr. Tamplin. As someone who has been practicing SOME kind of sports and performing in front of some of my friends (God bless them) I could say that your insights are spot on. The concept of " totally relaxed" singing or "totally relaxed" playing is utterly useless when it comes to actual performing an athletic feat or singing on stage. I practiced boxing for some times and I used to be scolded by my coaches as being "too relaxed" and allowed my opponent, who manage the stress in their body to incredible speed and explosiveness, to do whatever the heck they want to do to me before I even realized what just happened. Same with performing with the live bands as the entire band literally had to told me to "put some weight" into my singing cause they can't hear me as I was "relaxing" on stage.

@scotttovey
@scotttovey 4 жыл бұрын
What is your voice type? bass, baritone, tenor? It makes a difference. You always have to start within your natural range and work from there. The lower your vocal range, the lower your falsetto tends to be. That is to say: if you are a deep base or a lower baritone, it is not likely that you are going to be able to sound like Barry Gibb singing Staying Alive, this is unless Ken has a secret sauce he came across over the years. So make sure your expectations are realistic and find out what you can do with what you have. You may end up with a sound that is unique to yourself which others want to emulate. Lastly, if you can afford to do so, take Ken's course so you don't end up blowing your voice out trying to do falsetto or some other technique improperly.

I think of inhaling two ways (1) take a deep breath as I suck in my stomach -- this seems to expand my ribs and get lots of air into my lungs or (2) take a deep breath and expand my stomach. It feels as if I'm getting more air in stomach and less in my lungs. Which was is correct?

Thank you so much for this Ken... You have no idea how many times I've tried to explain this on the forum (Insert: "Man crying out in the wilderness" here LOL) … actually, I recant that, as I'm sure you of all people more than understand that :-) I usually use the analogy of the bagpipes, with your diaphragm being the air bladder. You maintain a nice constant pressure and you get predictable output... and to hit those crazy high notes, you have to increase the pressure a bit on the bagpipe bladder, "in a controlled manner"... and back off to the normal constant when you done. Still its nice to get that clear confirmation, as sometimes we can get to doubting ourselves and questioning our foundations.

Singing from a stool with the guitar seems to make breathing more difficult. I keep running out of air. I can sing the same songs at karaoke with no trouble.

Hi and thanx for this super Video. Question: your ha ha demonstration, is this to Show the muscles Used in generall while singing? Because If i Start with such an Impulse it rather maked the First Word explode. For example the Song price Tag From jessi j. When i sing „everybody Look to the Right“ everybody bursts out loud If i Give Same belly Impulse. Or is it better to let tummy fall while Inhale then tighten muscels (Not pulling in belly) and then Sing First Note? After several years of expensive Coaching this is still Not clear to me 😢

Hey Ken. I am very frustrated and desperate. I simply cannot for the life of my get the breathing right. I can't even inhale without feeling like I am not getting a full breath. That means I don't know which feeling to sustain to have my breath supported. I can't afford your course at the moment. Is there a foolproof way to find the breath support?

I was trained in two school choirs growing up and have been singing for most of my life.. However - I think I just kinda stopped breathing in this way or forgot how beneficial it is TO breath like this when singing. So, these days, when I sing - my stomach inflates when I breath in and deflates when I breath out... But now I remember you're supposed to do the opposite when singing lol. I can sing about 2 octaves above middle C but they sound kinda soft and I guess it's because I was lacking that power.. Breathing like this really strengthens ones power.

i figured out with the help of a coach that as soon as you pushed out all the air on a note you relax the stomach and its filling almost automaticly. after concentrating to relax the shoulders and breath below the stomach. its what you teach, so im glad to have a good coach actually showing it. thanks for all the confirmation and for sharing your knowledge

Told me to learn to sing. I can’t hold a note but if this helps my digestion acid reflux posture etc. Then this should be fun remedy.
