Hi guys!
Welcome to this channel.
This video is about how to breed cardinal tetras by using a breeding box.
The key to successfully making the cardinal tetras spawn below 3 points:
1. Mature fish
2. Using different kinds of inducements: live food, water change, lighting change...
3. Patience.
Please check this video to know how I made the breeding box(breeder box)

1:17,Sorry, I need to make a correction regarding the breeding water. Simply letting the water sit for 3 days doesn't remove the chlorine. I've experienced fish deaths due to this mistake. Now, I only use chlorine-free stream water.

could be because of chloramine cause chloramine doesn't evaporate easily

All tetras fish prefer to spawn pre dawn and at sunrise or a little therer after. Also to hep induce spawning a week without water changes and just evaporation, and then a 50% water change with slightly cooler water all the while feeding live food will indice spawning. Wait till mid mornings to check for eggs on spawning mops.

Water change and live foods are both effective spawning inducements. You seem very good at this. Thanks for the comment!

Dear Bo: I’m super-impressed with this, informative, instructional video! I also appreciate the addition of dialogue. Breeding cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) certainly takes expertise. I’d never manage it, starting with hard, alkaline water. Success with fry sensitive to light also involves more work than most aquarists want to invest. Thank you for sharing this, amazing video of your experience with this, terrific, delicate species. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

very nice and informative video. Keep going! Can you share some details how you condition them. What do you feed them and how often in a day? For how long do you condition them before breeding? Thanks allot!
@bothetetrabreeder8734
@bothetetrabreeder8734 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Sorry for the late reply. Actually, I don't intentionally condition them. Normally, they are kept in a mixed tank with other tetra fish. I usually feed them flakes. Alternatively, you can feed them live food a week before breeding, but it's not necessary. As long as you see that the female fish is fat and plump, you can catch them to breed anytime.

I just notice today that my neon tetra breed daily in the morning. They really like laying eggs on the java moss. However, those ember tetra obviously know that's a daily event to get a nice feed. So so soon as the eggs are laid, they get nibbled by the ember tetra......those little orange bastards. The water temp is 24.3 and we are in winter.
@bothetetrabreeder8734
@bothetetrabreeder8734 2 жыл бұрын
wow, that's so cool! check the java moss and see if you can still find smne eggs there. you need to put the eggs in a seperate tank so they will not be eaten by the ember tetras. thanks for your watching!
@blqnd
@blqnd 2 жыл бұрын
@@bothetetrabreeder8734 Laid eggs today again on the moss. Each time, the female dropped 4-5 eggs. today, the ember tetra were not there but the parents ate them.

I believe the half-life of chlorine in water is about 180 days so I don’t know if three days will dechlorinate it very much.
@bothetetrabreeder8734

@@bothetetrabreeder8734 Reason I'm asking is I currently have a group of 9 (4 females, 5 males) in a breeding setup. This is my 5th attempt in breeding them. They have been fattened up and have been showing spawning behavior for the past 2 weeks, however I haven't found any eggs yet. Water is RO with tannins, 27°C. There's some Java Moss in there as spawning media on top of a transparent box with mesh on top. I feed them small pallets and flake food in the morning and baby brine shrimp in the afternoon. So, what I take from your successfull Axelrodi breeding attempt is you do not feed them for a couple of days to get the fish to spawn? Is that correct? Might be worth trying that with the Simulans.
@bothetetrabreeder8734
@bothetetrabreeder8734 2 жыл бұрын
@@dennisbinkhorst2039 It's all about using different kinds of inducements. If they don't spawn after 2-3 days, we can feed them live foods as an inducement. The reason I don't feed them for the first 2-3 days is: 1. Tetras prefer to breed in clean new water. 2. They would get more excited seeing live foods If they haven't eaten in longer days. It can also be an inducement. There are other inducements such as lowering the temperature, lowering of lighting( see my neon tetra breeding video). You also have to make sure they don't feel stressed in the breeding tank. That's why I tried to avoid disturbing the fish as possible as I could. Even when I feed them, I do it at night. I do want to try breeding green neons. But unluckily, they all died a few months ago because of the white spot disease. I just bought a new batch recently and they are still very young. So it's not possible to breed them yet.
