@Fishtory I just wanted to chime in on the use of Methylene Blue. I attended a talk at Milwaukee Aquarium Society given by Rob McClure. He has stopped using this method and instead uses Alder cones. It’s been confirmed by a renowned PHD Microbiologist that Methylene Blue gets in the Cory eggs causes damage to soft tissue. Eyes, gills, and around the spine. I would be happy to get you connected with Rob he’s a great resource and so grateful to have him in our club.

@@AdriCr4ft Any pointers on which plants you use? Crypts, Java, Vals, Sags, and anubis seem to be what survive best. The first 4 of that list all have the same leaf shape and growth pattern. Stem plants just dissolve in my water. Even house plants are affected by how hard our water is (and we have a water softener lol). If you've got some other suggestions to try I'd love some variety! 😊

@@rustybraids just give me a few minutes I’m going to give you the list I have in my tank with no co2 injection. I’m just not very good with names and spellings as English is not my forte. It’s ok. I want to give you the right names but many you mentioned work very well. What I have found is also the size of the plants you put in can matter but I might be wrong. I think it’s just the fact it has no co2 injection so they grow incredibly slowly, and with every plant there is usually a initial die back as the plant gets used to its environment! They will eventually put out new growth unless they are super small. Usually they need at least one leaf to photosynthesis? I’m sure Alex can correct me if I say something wrong aha. :) So let me just do that for you. Post soon

Oh good to hear! Well first id make sure you see some really fat bellied females along with males heh. But my guess is they spawned on the glass, a rock or leaf and just ate them immediately. Id check the tank as much as possible and look under any broad leaves or rock overhangs/wood. You can always feed them normal for a week or two...then feed them live blood worms /black worms, meal worms/ grubs etc (frozen if all else fails) spirulina waffers 2x a week and protein the other 5 meals for a week or two...while letting the water temp creep up 4 or 5 degrees....and even scooping 2 to 5 % of the water out every 2 days for about a week ...then hit them with the cold fresh water trick :) Goodluck, my friend- let me know how it turns out please.-Alex

Very timely, I have some pygmy corys coming next week. Probably not the best to start with. I’m limited to 10 gallon tanks and it was pygmy or hasbrosus from what I read and I liked the pygmy best. So wish me luck! Please tell me about your shelving. I just bought some heavy duty, rated to 600# with wheels, 800 or 850# with adjustable feet. I put mine on wheels. Shelves are 24” wide so I can put 10 gallon tanks front to back on them. My 2 concerns are how many tanks I can really put on this shelf, and, if the wire is going to properly support the base of my (framed) tanks. Thought about twisting them a bit to get better support. Please share your experience. Thank you. LOVED the video. I’m sure I’ll be referring back frequently.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
I bought mine at Home Depot.. each shelf is rated for 300#s and fail tested up to 600#s. I'm not a fan of rolling shelves just because of minor earthquakes because i live in Seattle and that is actually fairly common (Japan, Indonesia, southern and central California or Alaska are in similar situations also.) I should bolt them into my wall, however i let it sway a bit. But if there is an earthquake over around a 6.4 or 6.6...all my tanks are gonna shatter anyhow. Just be careful not to front load a rolling cart, because any balance issues are extremely amplified due to sloshing of water. I hope that helps a bit? It was around $65 i believe maybe 59.99 on sale even. And just their in house brand of storage shelving. Also, its wire shelving, so you probably want some chip board or laminate to cut to the size of the bottom of your tanks that are over 15 gallons.

I had wondered if Corys need a lot of open space on the tank floor, since there are lots of videos of corys schooling at bottom level in these open spaces. But I see your Corys seem quite happy hunting around in the tightly planted tank. I ask this because I'm planning a tank of only Dwarf Sagittaria, which in the long run can potentially get very crowded at ground level, due to runners going out to colonise available space. What do you think?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 жыл бұрын
I think as long as they have some room to swim in mid water and get excersize they seem to do very well. Plus I add live black worms and then they hunt them for a few weeks and it keeps them occupies and seemingly "happy" hehe

I received 6 gold stripe corys 72 hours ago. They were about 3/4 - 1 inch. Anyone know how old that would be? I was shocked at how small they were. But they tripled in weight and grew to a little over and inch over night. Is this normal? I don't want to support the use of growth hormones.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
Probably 4 to 6 months old...and no that's not normal... they may have been severely restricted in movement and space...sometimes it stunts fish, but my guess is they had high tds also and they have gained a little water weight and expanded in your tank on top of eating too. Thats my best guess? But it's odd

@@Fishtory Glad you're safe. Yeah, the growth freaked me out. I won't be ordering from that place anymore. They may be acting odd too. They stay in 3 groups of three & two & one little guy usually stays hidden. I think I'll medicate them in a few days if things are still odd. Thanks for sharing your big brain with me and stay safe.

AKSHUALLY, There’s no such thing as a “Low Pressure Front”. Do you mean a cold front or a low pressure system.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct, appologies on the terminology. I mean a low pressure system has moved in but the moisture has not. So just prior to a sizable storm or rain event

There might be 850 but there are not 850 known species. They are not a known species until they are named so you can’t include the C and CW numbered fish.

Correct. I said species and morphs... but by morphs i mean things like Highfin, sailfin, cws and lasers vs aneaus. I believe there are 171 "species" with taxonomic descriptions.

Whoa! Are they amanos? Ive never heard of neocaridina or caridina going to eat eggs...other than the milky white clear ones that have fungus. Many friends who breed corys and plecos use shrimp to keep their eggs clean in fact.
