Impressive, complicated shoot, if it was a regular link then you could really finesse it to be as close to perfect as possible. I’m guessing there was a long lead in to this shoot while you planned everything so you would have had time to source a couple of extra things. If you had gone for a more avant guard carpet style then you could have maybe had a carpet with large rectangular sections of different colours. This might have made sense of using a piece of carpet under the Australian’s chair to save trying to key out the floor which had different paint and lots of shadows. You used a small airpods case to line everything up but if you could have both bought the same table (I’m guessing Ikea is the easiest way to go there) then lining that up could have really brought the 2 halves together. But I couldn't even sit through a lot of the technical explanations because I’m never going to attempt anything like this. If I was doing something like this I would probably find locations that seemed to match but had a hard line like a door frame that could be roughly centred, then I would use things to obscure imperfections where the images didn't match on the floor. Maybe buy a large rug for each location to sit everything on… mainly because I don't have the technical know-how to do what you have.

Great work! There are two things that still need improvement: First, the eyelines in the OTS shots are noticeably off. You can see that the blurry person in the foreground isn't actually making eye contact. I feel like this could probably be fixable by putting the actual Zoom screen to where the face of the other person is and then painting it out? Also, the room sound is noticeably different between both people. Sure, they're probably using different mics, but also the rooms have a different amount of reverb. I found it quite noticeable in Ryan's audio, and I was watching this on my phone. Other than that: Amazing technique!

Hello everyone. I found this video by chance - and watched with interest. After thinking through all the details, I have to say: respect for your work! But...! When I then watched the actual interview, I immediately noticed a big mistake that unfortunately many (professional) people make: you focused so much on the image aspect - "living room", light with "brightness" and "color", camera angles - as well as the technical composition of the image/video, that you neglected the live sound that was running along. Of course you paid attention to latency / delay, but the “rooms” sound completely different. On "SociallyU" it's a dry, warm living room sound, but in Australia it sounds like a workspace with smooth walls and a high ceiling (so-called "early reflections"). What I would like to give as a hint for further development is: pay more attention to your sound people, for example think about reverb dampers that capture the room reverberation outside of the camera (i.e. in the hidden spot "behind the couch"). By the way: I have been a musician and sound engineer for over 40 years - and have worked in various audio, video and TV productions for a good 20 years. In the majority of cases I had to fight to get a little more budget to at least deliver a "somewhat suitable" sound. If I only got 10% of the video and light budget for my sound equipment, I was already happy! Therefore, I ask you: take the time to work on the sound - so that this already very good development becomes a great product! With best regards from Germany!

Lmao, I had that at a moment as well. But as long as you have the gear it will be manageable, but if you want to do this with a smaller budget - there are easier ways to cut corners. You will not have the same quality here but you can still put two people in a room - the concept remains the same, just stripped down.

Usually, you mention a 6-second delay, but it seems like it wasn't used in this project. Is this delay typically applied to Foreground / CAM inputs? I assume the Background from Unreal Engine doesn't have any delay. Also, how accurately does the tracking with Vive Mars stick after implementing a 6 frame per second delay? Here's some BTS of setting ups the compositing for these two guests 12,000 miles apart, we added in shadows, filters and threw in some footsies for effect. but the hardest thing to organise was the matching chairs as one crew is in Australia and the Other crew was in the UK, so we found matching chairs at IKEA, Bought these and this really brought the illusion together kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYqWmIF7mZyog7csi=tjxis_6B3dENRL0C we also filmed a local beach with the surf and added this into the composition to give the illusion we were filming a live view of the Sydney opera house. Attention to detail was everything.

We did this back in 2021, two guests 12,000 miles apart, we opted for recorded live 4K video of all shots which were digitally transferred and composted in post back in Australia. when new do this, distance makes little difference other than the time zone. We priced it by engaging a UK crew and getting their rates for contracting their services, plus green room setup etc.The bottom line is that distance makes little difference to the price, its about the crews and their rates. But you need two expert crews, !!! no point having one crew in USA and no one good at the other location.

The problem is the dynamic range isn't the same on each shot. You must use the EXACT same camera with the EXACT same lighting (both physically and digitally) for this to look right. THe bacfkground must also be virtual for it to look right as that lighting won't match. You did MOST of this.
