Very late to this video but yet another great one! Fun to see the old YNAB aesthetic. One feature I haven't seen come in that I would love: a way to sort budget categories by "due date" with the soonest showing at top. Or, filter categories that are "due by X" to see those categories that are not flexible in time. Just a thought! Thanks Hannah and YNAB team!

I’m addicted to these videos but I’m so happy I stumbled across it. I don’t know why but I was trying to use Qapital to do this (for years, try maybe 5 😗!!) so I’m happy to say I’ve converted. Thanks for all your hilarious videos Hannah and the helpful tips. I learn something new after every video!! ❤️

I kept hearing about software and thought to check it out today. Not only was this video JUST posted, but I'm also seeing what the HYPE is all about and I'm excited to further check it out. I’m most looking to how you all have, in my head, introduced reconciliation of accounts in personal finance. I do this with my business and really like this approach. :)

I've been glued to your videos for the last few days. I use excel to budget but I'm tempted to try the app. It seems so useful! I just don't want to pay for what I can do for free. But it's definitely a cool resource

Oh, so kind of you!! Haha! I'd say absolutely take advantage of the 34-day free trial-you don't need to enter any card info or anything, so once the trial is over it's over and there's no "cancelling" you need to do or any of that. You may learn a few things along the way with your trial, and you can take that knowledge back to your excel sheet! Doesn't matter what you use to budget as long as you budget :) -Hannah 🌻

Yes, this is how you can do it! :) I think Rule Four is my favorite rule, just because it feels SO GOOD to start putting your money into the next month! It's like a giant boulder just rolls off your back, you walk outside and it's sunshine and birdsong. I'm now budgeted through July; my next check will go into August. Ya don't know how great it feels until you're doing it, too!

I get paid at 25th of each month. I am in my trial and I was so confused when the new month started and there was "0" in a "Budgeted" Column. I had a panic attack ahaha! But now it's very clear that the most important column is "Available"!

We make sure we have the 4 walls covered food, car insurance, mortgage, electric. Then the car payment is in a separate account because that is the tax refund money that pays for a year and a half of payments plus principle payment. Internet is paid for the whole year all at once with tax refund. The Christmas fund is funded. Then the extra paychecks which there are 2 during the year goes to car tags and back to school for the kids and tax preparer.

The whole reason I found YNAB was because I was looking for a system that did not require me to forecast my paycheck on the 1st of the month when I got paid once a month in the middle of the month. This is exactly why I chose YNAB. And literal "what?!" when I saw you can set targets, then select all and fund them ALL! at once! Blew my mind.

YAY!! I know so many freelancers who finally felt like they could sustain their variable income by using YNAB. I love that it's priority based rather than "routine" based, so you can truly make it work with whatever kind of money stream you have. SO glad YNAB clicked for you!! 🌻 Hannah

Great video! So if that person that got $9,000 and say two weeks later he got another $3,000 I would assume he would then budget that for the fourth month ahead?
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's up to the individual! We know our own situation's best. He could budget out for a fourth month, or if he's pretty confident he'd lock in another check before the three months is up he could pad his savings, build up some true expenses, or if he has a wish farm he could harvest some dreams! -Hannah :)

Right! Fun fuels motivation, right? If we're enjoying ourselves and having a good time, we're more likely to stay motivated and stick to our plans than when we're constantly depriving ourselves and in eternal sacrifice mode. Good word, George!! -Hannah :)

I was wondering how you should do it when it comes to a weekly pay cycle? I work hourly and get paid weekly...how does that look when it comes to budgeting?
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Larry! Great question: sounds like you get paid an irregular amount on a regular schedule. Follow the same guidelines as the yellow house! You'll just budget more frequently. Every week when you get your paycheck, cover all the highest priority expenses you can first that must be paid before your next paycheck (any utilities due before the next paycheck, more grocery money, etc) and anything that's left over can go to building true expenses (auto repair, clothing, wish farm, etc). I hope this helps-hit me with any questions you've got! -Hannah :)
@shadowkyttie
@shadowkyttie 4 жыл бұрын
Probably a dumb questions. But what if we get 26 paychecks in a year instead of 24? So, there are 2 months in the year that there is a third paycheck. Do you just use that check to push towards being that "month" ahead?
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 3 жыл бұрын
There's no inherent reason why you can't do your budgeting on calendar months. I do most of my budgeting on a weekly basis because I get paid on a weekly basis. I simply set aside roughly 1/4 of the money to cover any monthly expenses each month and then pay them at the beginning of each month. In the case of the 26 pa checks, you can push them to the next month if you're not already ahead, otherwise you would likely just add those to savings, pay them to the mortgage or factor them into the retirement savings. There's a bunch of possibilities and it's probably best not to get too bogged down with it.

What if you have a regular amount of money, but get it at different times of the month? I work part-time, so I receive that money on the same date every month. But I also receive various benefits, which are paid at different times throughout the month, and are paid 4-weekly, so they change each month. I have no idea how to budget at all. Years ago, I would have added it all up, divided it by 4 and just withdrawn that amount of cash every month, but these days I pay for most things with my debit card and I also have regular online payments which are paid at various points throughout the month.

Hey Janine! Truly, it all works the same no matter what pay schedule you're on. Fund your most important needs first (like bills that will be due before the next time you get paid), and make sure your "living" categories (like car fuel and groceries) have enough money in them to carry you through to the next paycheck. From there, it's up to you what's funded next and how much! Adding due dates and targets to your YNAB categories makes it SO easy to make sure you're funding the *most important* categories first that will carry you through to the next paycheck! 🌻 Hannah

I love the idea of budgeting two months out but the system only lets me budget into next month, future months aren't available yet. Am I missing something? I don't have enough dollars to do this across the board, but I get a housing allowance every three months that I pay out monthly for my rent, so I am getting by in just budgeting all of that money for rent in months 1 and 2 and letting it last for the three months, but would be cool to actually budget each month separately!
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sarah! No problem, we can get around this! YNAB will only let you budget one month past where you actually have month. So if you've only budgeted money into June, you can budget into July and not August. However, if you currently have money budgeted in both June and July, you have unlocked your ability to budget into August as well! Next time you get your allowance, drop money in the current month, then the next month, then you should be able to access the month after. It almost acts as a little safety feature, making sure you don't accidentally skip a month or get ahead of yourself in the budget! I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other troubles with your budget or confusions and I'd be happy to help!! -Hannah :)
