(Update: printable hinge template and shopping list now available on my website)
www.overlandunderbudget.com/p...
Alright guys! i finally made a video that that follows the steps of building this 270 degree awning. Ive updated my design and its now 50% slimmer and totally eliminates the need to sew your own bag by using an available ARB awning bag for just $35! I hope you enjoy the video, thank you so much to everyone who has subscribed to the channel it truly makes it fun to share these projects!
(update) Awning weight is: 35.8lbs including bag and hardware
Here is the parts list:
Steel tubing: 3/4" - 1/16th wall square tubing ($10-15 per 20ft length at the steel supply. You will need 4x 7ft, 2x 7ft 4inch-
Steel plate: 3/16th or 1/4 inch steel plate, a 1x2 feet sheet should be enough. Try asking if the steel supply has a "rem" pile and you can pay for the pound. My local supply sells it for .50cents per pound and if you find 1x2 ft piece or larger it will be super cheap!
1ft of 1inch steel galvanized pipe. Im using galvanized pipe because the inner dimeter fits a skate board bearing perfectly. However you MUST remove the galvanizing before welding! its toxic!
www.homedepot.com/p/The-Plumb...
12 skateboard bearings: www.amazon.com/608-2RS-Skateb...
1- 11x8ft tarp www.harborfreight.com/paintin...
1- ARB awning bag www.4wheelparts.com/p/arb-awn...
Hinge bolts
3x- 3 1/2 inch 5/16th grade 8 bolts
6x 5/16ths washers
3x 5/16th acorn nuts
Lifter arm bearing bolts- 3x -5/16th 1.5inch bolts and nuts

Tips from a fitter welder: Push while using mig don’t pull When drilling you should have relatively high rpm but also be using coolant or cutting compound Instead of welding the bearing in (this will most likely ruin the bearing) use a locking compound such as locktite, whith light heat you will still be able to remove the bearing

I change drill speed up/down to try to get curls/chips but never too much pressure and I use motor oil because I keep forgetting to order cutting oil. Yes: If there's SLA, then DRAG else if GASS then PUSH. Hundreds of Utoob videos about that. The Locktight suggestion is a good one. I'll remember it......

This is a really good design that I will build this fall (2023) to be my outdoor cutting/welding work area. Also, i wil be going 100% BoonDocking from Maine, to Key West, Galveston, the Rockies, and the Great Lakes in 2024/2025. Between now and then, I'll use this awning for 2/3 day camping trips. This must be the lowest cost 270 project on UToob and definitely the easiest to build.......

Why not use a waxed canvas? You can buy the canvas material and wax it yourself.
@OverlandUnderBudget
@OverlandUnderBudget 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinwhisenhunt2661 actually tried this first! it was awesome but it after leaving it open for a couple days the canvas stretched in the stress areas creating saggy spots. Another issue was that in the direct sun the wax would heat up and become very transferable and soft. If you left it open at night when you went to put it back it was hard as a rock since the wax gets hard as it cools.

As an older guy, I would highly recommend using a work bench/table/saw horse with clamps to raise your work pieces up to an height that is easier on your back. I clamp my work pieces down and find that it is easier to control my tool/saw/drill/sander. Otherwise, this is a great video. I really appreciate your use of hearing protection and eye protection.

I'm almost 65 and have never had the guts to learn how to weld... YOU have the guts to learn new things!!! If I had the guys when I was your age I would be living in a DIY Skylab somewhere just past Saturn learning something new! My point is this... never stop learning and always follow your dreams. Last month I bought a MIG welder and am learning how to weld. I've been a cabinetmaker for 30+ years and that has kept me busy and having fun, BUT I have always looked over my friend's shoulder wishing I had the guts to learn to weld. Thankfully that time has arrived!!!! Awesome vid... keep up the great job(s).

Your fabrication skills are clearly excellent and will make welding easy. Mig is point and squirt and gets great looking results but also makes bad habits easily. Buy a little arc box if you really want to learn to weld properly-I gives you more time to observe your weldpool,arc etc. Mig is just so convenient though. Anyway happy welding and good luck.

If no one has said it....get the welder nozzle closer to the weld. . You'll have cleaner welds and you can turn down the shielding gas (expensive) ...turn the heat down as well and you can weld continous. Been welding since I was 13/14...54 now. Thousands and thousands of feet of welds. Great job. I am a welder/smithy and I sew as well. ...gonna sew up some army surplus awning material ...heavy, but it's an E350...she can handle it.

To make removing the zinc coating from the pipe easier and more complete, cut your parts to length and drop them in a container of 50% diluted pool acid. Zinc plating goes away quickly and completely. Rinse, dry, weld. The acid bath will also remove mill scale, just takes a bit longer.

As a “woods” guy, metal has a voodoo quality to it. It’s made worse by reality tv that makes it seem like you need a fabrication shop, tattoos, and a bad attitude in order to make a damn thing. This whole series is great because it is none of those things. It’s almost tempting to get a welder and expand a little. Love the channel.

Oil always helps, and anything over 3/8" I'd recommend a pilot hole. Otherwise, having an actually sharp drill bit, spinning as close to ideal RPM is the most effective. I don't like being the I told you so guy, but mild steel with a 1/4" bit like this would ideally be drilled at 1500 RPM which is probably more than max of the drill.

I love watching newbies getting into welding. Lol.. it's called a bevel man. You want to put a bevel on the edge so your weld has a deeper penitration. You also want to mention how to set up your welder and what settings your using for the folks that have no idea what voltage and wire feed are for. That's an awesome welder your running. Super lucky to have won it! Congrats on that!! You have a great set up though.. you got it a lot better than I did when I first started. I welded all my roof racks outside. Under a tent. Mostly limited to working on projects up until winter hit. It was a struggle but I had a growing buisness for roof racks.. anyway. Great video man. I love the creativity and sleek design in this awning. I've made simpler fold out awning but I'm sure I will be making one of these for myself now. I LOVE that you went through all the tools you use in the beginning! Awesome tutorial! I've been thinking about welding as well, not quite in the budget yet. What would you suggest as an alternative if welder isn't available? If I may offer suggestion for video edits -when using the louder power tools, it would be lovely if you would adjust volume down. Having to constantly adjust the volume was distracting/inconvenient because I missed things that you said. So I would have to stop, rewind, and try listening again, but it was still difficult to time. Generally, I will add to comment section as a video is progressing so that I don't forget what I'd like to say/ask. Constantly having to adjust volume-rewind-playback-sometime rewind again-volume adjusting up and down through frequently proved to be too much for my patience tolerance levels. I'll check out more recent videos, hoping that this is no longer an issue because you really are an awesome teacher. Definitely someone I would like to learn from if/when your editing skill improves w/volume control. Or perhaps when I'm no longer premenstrual/premenopausal. 😉🤣

Very cool setup. I really like the design. If you have the room at the end of the steel square tubing, your local metal shop sells plastic end caps to seal the inside of the steel square tubing from moisture and rust prevention, apply a bit of clear silicone caulking before you place the end cap and you're weatherproofed!

Yes! Actually my first awning had these and I had forgotten order more. 3/4 3/4 caps available on amazon by the bag full!!

Great videos, you should sell your idea as a complete kit. Most of us don't have access to a welder.

Thanks I'll be doing a similar setup to yours. I have very strong winds here so I need to design it with round instead of square tubes to utilize pvc pipes cut in half longwise (split) to go ontop of the tarp and screw into the supporting send under the tarp. This should give me more tarp support from wind blowing the tarp right off the bolted end points.
