We are designing a monster from concept to combat stats and actions, then prepping a DnD 5e adventure for it! Writing your own balanced encounters for your homebrew ttrpg session is fun and actually pretty easy if you are using the resources of @AlphastreamRPG @SlyFlourish , Scott Fitzgerald Gray, and @mcolville

Something about the idea of a cursed undead headless knight filling the empty neck-opening of his armor with severed arms like a bunch of Olive Garden breadsticks is hilarious to me.

@@mapcrow i love the idea that the Behander Knight's Mark, and the fact that your hand severs itself and runs away like a crawling claw, its symbolistic of the punishment for stealing in older times where you lose a hand. So each hand jutting from his breastplate is a thief he's already collected from.

I know supernatural creatures don't exactly need a source for their mysterious noises, but a war horn of the creature's throatless lungs wheezing into and reverberating within the cavity of his armor seems like a pretty chilling description to me.

I've noticed that a very important bit of worldbuilding is "why do the players have to kill this monster?" A lot of players (especially nowadays) will attempt to be cordial or diplomatic with their enemies. It's important to have monsters that Will Not Stop. A horde of undead who march forth at the will of their dark master. A band of dragon men who fight till the death, because as they say, "To die in glorious battle is to have lived the greatest life!"

Something I think would work for this and explain the blowing of hunting horns is that ethereal phenomena can be like a weather condition in D&D. Some nights you have fog or extreme humidity, some nights you have source-less ghostly wailing. A natural occurrence given that the ethereal plane overlaps the material. If you can cast fog or change the weather, then its reasonable that a creepy malevolent horror could passively bring about ghostly weather changes. So the sound of hunting horns could be a component of ethereal weather brought by the Behander.

I like the idea of this Hand Brute seeking the false king's coin, but also having a side-quirk: if your character is empty-handed (literally, unarmed), it and its hounds will not attack you. This is how it doesn't harm civilians, since it's still bound to some sort of code of chivalry. Maybe it would parley? And perhaps it also prioritises the rich, too? So it would mark on the person carrying the most cash. And their allies, unless they are open to a suited arrangement. (Of course, the creature has no mouth, so the voice comes from the goat.) Funny how a design and a little creative concept can spark imagination!

I like introducing common, but unlikely to be with the PCs, weaknesses. The hobfey, a catchall fey creature attempting to capture all the different representations of fey in 80s fantasy movies, is terrified of house cats (stolen from Stephen King's "Cat's Eye"). They shrink down to tiny size, reduced to 1 damage per attack, and get disadvantage on all rolls while a cat is within close range.

Ha! Right on! Truthfully, when I prep monsters for a 5E game, I just right down two numbers for attribute/skills, GOOD and BAD, which would include the ability mod and the proficiency bonus (or lack thereof). So if anything, I over prepped for the episode because I thought it would be more broadly useful for folks. Haha. There is an article in the OSR called "Just Use Bears" which says anytime you need to improve a monster, just use the stats for a bear and wing the rest! This is easier to do in an old school game than 5E, but it's a really helpful reminder to chill out and reskin for a home game. Haha!!

Unlike the majority of monster books out there that are full of stats and mechanics, sounds like your monster book is about lore and theme and setting and impact of the monsters on the world and story and helping GMs consider those things when prepping, and I am all for that kind of different approach to a monster book because I have enough stat-boxes and static monster descriptions already.

what about animal based monsters like dragons, that one dnd t rex and sea monsters? would the goal just be survival
@mapcrow
@mapcrow Ай бұрын
You have the right idea, but survival is a bit broad. The best plan for survival is to avoid combat with the PCs. So try protect home, hunt for food, feed young, scavenge nest material, collect shiny objects, follow light source. Think specifically about what the monster wants, and then have them retreat when it becomes too hard only to try again later at a more opportune time. Also, in games with an action economy, you want to make sure the animal attacks in a pack, calls for back up, or has multiple actions per round.
@A-necron
@A-necron Ай бұрын
@@mapcrow like how certain animals get aggressive after hibernation, mating season and territory, aswell as how bears when scavenging human waste can become a threat. stuff like that? wow i can just imagine a giant bear with large spikes, big claws pushing over large walls of fortresses for the stench of leftovers, causing safety hazards for the soldiers who reside there, sometimes chasing off dragons to keep a carcass they found haha, and how sometimes a monster will run away when they find a strange thing, like modern animals
@mapcrow
@mapcrow Ай бұрын
@@A-necron Yeah! Though this is all with the caveat that often run monsters that are intelligent or are involved with people who are also in the encounter. Very rarely will I say, "a bear attacks".
