Want to grow broccoli, cabbage and kale but always picking off cabbage white caterpillars or shooing away pigeons? Sick of getting tangled up in temporary netting?! Tim and Maddy from Permaculture Magazine show you how to build a moveable brassica cage that opens easily for weeding and harvesting from entirely recycled materials during lockdown in easy steps.

Lovely. Many thanks - and also love the Proof of Concept pause time - have such a bad habit of rushing things when I get to the allotment!

Thank you for sharing this!! I have been hunting for ideas on creating a non permanent structure to protect my garden bed from birds, mice and squirrels, I think making this with some minor adjustments will work, yay!! I'm also considering adding shade clothe and perhaps something for winterizing. Super grateful to you Tim and Maddy, much love.

This was interesting to see. I'll have a go at something similar. I'd have preferred to see more closeups of how you assembled it, and to have the music removed as it was loud and distracting and hard to hear you talk over it.

Really good professional looking cage which will certainly slow the cabbage white's down a bit. I am guessing that even if one or two do find their way in, they are not intelligent to get out again which would give you the clue to look for eggs and caterpillars. One request, pretty please, if you do some more DIY videos of this sort is to put the music at the same or lower volume to the commentary. I was turning the volume up and down all the way through, and a couple of places the loud music drowned out the start of the words.

Be cautious using bamboo. Some species split when they dry, thereby creating the favorite habitat for some species of mosquito. Rain or watering can keep the interior of the split stalks plenty moist for rearing mosquitoes. Bamboo groves in SE Asia are primary habitat for the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) if that one has arrived in your neighborhood.

Great idea! I definitely want to make some like that! Can I ask why you made it so tall? Would it be ok if it’s only 3 feet tall instead? Thanks! Martine 🇨🇦

It’s tall enough to grow Brussel sprouts to optimum height and climb inside to weed. Not high enough for tree cabbage.
