PEOPLE OF IMBRATTAMURI !!!
The positive side of the quarantine is that I find the time to make videos😆 and today I propose something that you can all do, with a little patience, and that everyone would like in their own garden !!
How to build a brick barbecue or brazier (call it what you want).
First of all what do you need?
I'll tell you what I had available:
about 90 old handmade bricks 30x15x5.5
15 refractory bricks
2 refractory limbics + one piece
some rods of different sizes (and an old grill)
2 old tiles
fence net about 1sqm
a black garbage bag
Plus I bought:
3 one-meter boards
1 plank of 90 cm
6 bags of masonry mortar
9 bags of ready-mixed concrete
For the size of the brazier I based on the measurements of a grill that I already had.
The drawing is very simple, below I put the measurements:
concrete base 116x80x7-8 cm approx
the walls h = 85cm from the base, l = 75cm
top of the brazier h = 10cm l = 75cm (3 large plates), L = 110cm approximately
brazier, internal space approx.55x38cm h = 30cm approx
EQUIPMENT
trowel
mason's hammer
mortarboard (trowel)
level
grinder
steel brush
brush or paintbrush
THE BASE
To start, I cleared the grass and leveled the ground in the area where I made the base. Then, after placing the boards and putting them together, I started kneading the concrete and casting. I made a first layer of 2-3 cm, after which I drowned the iron and I filled it up to a thickness of 7-8 cm leveling it with a line.
Not having found the rapid concrete, I had to wait a few hours before removing the walls.
THE WALLS
The walls must be detached according to the length of the hollow blocks (1m). I made sure that they rested halfway up the brick because initially I wanted to hide them in the brickwork, while during the work I preferred to detach as you can see in the video.
The difficulty in this part lies in bringing the corners to plumb, since they are old and all different bricks. Precisely because of the inhomogeneity I plumbed the outside without looking at the inside. Another thing to keep an eye on is to make sure that when looking at the two walls in profile they are "straight". After a few hours, the comments are cleaned up and standardized with a steel brush and everything is brushed. After having leveled the 2 walls, we are ready to lay the tiles.
PLAN OF THE BRAZIER
I laid the planks on the mortar and placed them flat and centered, leaving about 2.5cm of space along the sides. I did not cut the board at the bottom because 1) it remains behind and cannot be seen 2) I have 5 cm more space on the top, then do as you like.
Having done this, I placed the boards and "sewed" the boards, that is, I filled them sideways so that they are hooked to the casting. After putting the mesh, I wet the surface and filled it with concrete up to the level of the boards.
Having to wait a few hours to proceed, I went to the next day.
THE BRAZIER
To detach the brazier I started, obviously from the outer wall. I plumbed the corner and left an internal space of 55cm. in the meantime I have also detached the round of bricks along the floor. I made the back with vertical refractory bricks, because that's where I'll make the fire. By cutting a quarter of refractory bricks in the points where it was needed, I tied the masonry and finally I made a small hood with a 90cm plank divided into 3, this to prevent sparks from ending up behind.
To reinforce the hood, I plastered it on the outside and put 2 tiles on the top more for aesthetics than for utility. The height from the finished top to the base of the hood is about 30cm.
PLAN
Continuing from the base of the brazier, I bricked up the external circle. The simplest way is to brick up the corners and use them as a support to lay the others.
