I used 4" heat tape on mine, with great results. I hung craft board on each end, to give my Ball Pythons a greater sense of seclusion/security. Each plastic post must be the same height but I did have some of mine a bit taller & I used those in the front so when I slid my tubs in, the rear of the rack was a much tighter fit. The front had NO MORE than the thickness of 2 cds. LOVE my "Home Depot" rack!

Flex watt heat tape, as long as you have it on a thermostat.
@ryandean36012 жыл бұрын
yeah but they sell most heat cables at wuite a lenght i think the mediums were like 20 feet , so i imagine that there made for rack systems or a lot of cages side by side, but thanks man, also where can you get heat tape and how does it work and how much does it cst
@ZipZamZach11 жыл бұрын
You just need a thermostat. They are expensive, but absolutely essential to responsibly keeping any reptile.

heat tape is the way to go. if you use heat cable you have to snake it multiple times per shelf. tub price depends on the size tub youll be using. i found one of those racks at a lowes for 30-35. i cant imagine the whiteboard being more then 15 bucks a sheet.
@ryandean36012 жыл бұрын
mann that looks awesome and really easy to do, so would you use like heating cables? ive sen it forom like zoomed, its a 12 foot wire that replaces undertank heating mats, so i could just use that with ease, u can get them in like 4 sizes 12 feet or 11 feet is the smallest, but would that work? also how much did all the materials like the tubs and rack and whiteboard cost you?
@CressMC11 жыл бұрын
you can use just about anything thin for the spacing, cd's work well.

Pretty sweet, however, you did not put the cost of the white board. And can you get that board from home depot also?

Can you add heattape? If so how would you do it ? Did you make a video showing how you did it? Thanks
@rcmodelers11 жыл бұрын
Great video, I built one of these and added casters (Home Depot @ $4 ea) so I can move it around to get to the tubs easier. I am about to add the flexwatt to the shelves. Did you put anything under the flexwatt(ie:a layer of aluminum tape)?
@LionelMPhd8 жыл бұрын
did you ever do a video installing heat tape

How would you add heat tape to this?
@elklord33311 жыл бұрын
basically hes putting that scrap piece of board on top of the tub before he puts the shelf on top of the tub. When the shelf is secure and put into place hes going to slide out that scrap piece of board and then hes left with a small 1/8 inch gap. That gap allows the snake to have some ventilation. If he didnt do that step there would be no gap and the tub would be sitting right up against the shelf giving no ventilation. Hope this helped. Theres not much to it.

What are the small polls you used for the shelf called? All of the racks I can see have a fixed height, I didn't know they made little 'connectors' as an adjustable height.

I use heat mats, a bit more expensive. I tried the heat tape, I worried me that it would get to hot and either burn my snakes, and or melt the tubs and burn them. I use the same tubs, is my theory correct with the heat tape?
@CallMePesos3 жыл бұрын
lol no wtf get a thermostat
@toomuchlimer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you need a thermostat even for heat mats
@eliotchew12 жыл бұрын
That'd be £130 but I was looking on an website earlier and I can buy a plastic rack with 4 floors for £10 which is like $15 and screws are like £1 and the board is about £5-10! Brillant video when I have around £50 I'm going to do this method but with 8 floors for reptiles and the same for rodents!
@hoosierbri10 жыл бұрын
How would you enclose the sides to this rack? The sides all appear to be sloped/tapered so a flush fit wouldn't be adaptable. I want to use heat tape that is 4"-6" wide rather than the cable/rope heat.

heat cable was actually intended for other things and someone came up with the idea to use it for racks. pretty smart huh? lol just do a quick search. i got mine from reptile basics bcuz i was in a rush and didnt shop for the best price. it depends what width you want and wattage. 3in and 4in are more commonly used. 2-25 a foot plus another 5 to get insulator clips.

I don't understand the ventilation part can u explain it or make a short video about it
@yendorofny9 жыл бұрын
Heat tape regulated on a thermostat ESPECIALLY, will in way melt this plastic or any other for that matter. Those are the rare instances where someone damaged the tape in some way & it severally malfunctioned/shorted out.
@LionelMPhd8 жыл бұрын
are you saying that heart tape on this rack is not safe it will melt it
@yendorofny8 жыл бұрын
No, I'm not saying that at all. As long as it's regulated by a quality thermostat and the sensor is securely attatched to the tape, to monitor the heat output.

you need heat tape.
@michaelbonnet5907 жыл бұрын
You can either use heat tape, or gouge out a trough for heat cables.
@JosephMacaby7 жыл бұрын
You could also use those magnet clips and just glue the magnet part to the rack and then clip heat mats if you had mats instead of heat tape or cable.
@JMX0712 жыл бұрын
What do you use for a heat source?
@reissval10 жыл бұрын
How well does these plastic racks hold up to heating elements (cable, tape, mats, etc.)? I'm thinking about doing one of these, but I concerned that the heat mats might melt the plastic.

My friend built a rack like this and he has no problems with heat tape and the plastic tubs/rack.

do not get the plastic racks at Lowe's. They do not have flat framing to screw or glue down the white board.

what size tubs will go in?
@TeamPeople19917 жыл бұрын
Pretty much any size. But materials to fit your need
@Vixeh12 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea, but heating wouldn't be very efficient as it would escaping through the plastic grate? It would still be possible to heat, but you'd probably find your power bill would be higher than running a melamine or similar rack.
