A concrete masonry unit (CMU) is a standard size rectangular block used in building construction. CMUs are some of the most versatile building products available because of the wide variety of appearances that can be achieved using them.
Those that use cinders (fly ash or bottom ash) as an aggregate material are called cinder blocks in the United States, breeze blocks (breeze is a synonym of ash) in the United Kingdom, and hollow blocks in the Philippines. In New Zealand and Canada they are known as concrete blocks (a name common in the United States also). In New Zealand, they are also called construction blocks.
In Australia they are also called Besser blocks and Besser bricks, because the Besser Company was a major supplier of machines that made concrete blocks. Clinker blocks use clinker as aggregate. In non-technical usage, the terms cinder block and breeze block are often generalized to cover all of these varieties.

MY MAN! I have been watching HOURS of youtube videos in search of something like this. Your series on this project is extremely well done. You are VERY informative and you don't skip over any small details nor do you overexplain very simple concepts. I was on the fence about hiring a contractor but after watching your videos I now have the confidence to do this myself. You are doing God's work. haha. Thank you so much!

Very cool i need to build one for my parents.When they were told to evacuate there was no place to go.She drove to a metal building car wash and parked in there . Never again .I learning how to build and thats the first thing I will.build. I think your way is better.Im looking into the earthbag however bricks are ready made so that will.be the way on the storm shelter. A big hug to you and yor hard working wife for showing me something today that makes better sense. Im 60 and know this could be done even at my age.

Man, I'm glad I found these videos. My wife and I will start building our house within the next year. We're building in the side of a steep hill and decided to do a basement instead of trying to build up the hill to do a slab foundation. Tons of info in your videos and very well explained...

Man how I wish you had post frame construction videos. I watch tons of those because I plan on building one myself and YOUR attention to detail in explanation would mean a World to all who are planning the same. The videos I watch, the guys are professional and, I guess, try to explain it, but they completely miss ALL of the small details that are the most important parts to know. Not sure whether or not they do this on purpose. THANK YOU SO MUCH for these series of videos!

Questions: 1. On many blocks, you don't put mortar under one short end. Why? 2. Will you insulate the basement? 3. Will this basement's upper floor be flush w the existing home?

I'm looking to have a small cabin built on raw land and a basement is a must, I wish I were a little younger to do this but I'm just researching on block or poured basement. It’s me again with a question, the yellow string tells you where to set the block so that the wall is plum all the way down, correct? Does it ever go out of plum? Is it necessary to use a four foot level to check to see if it’s plum or does the yellow string keep it all lined up? This is me worrying 😒 If I build a basement do I need drainage tile around the outside or inside of it? I’ll be using a septic tank. Sorry for driving everyone crazy 🤪

Hi! Did you pour the concrete every layer of bricks or pour all at once on top after you’ve done putting on all blocks wall?
@myrealname2022
@myrealname2022 Жыл бұрын
It is typical to completely stack the walls, then pour concrete in the top and then use a concrete vibrator to help remove air pockets. Best to rent that tool vs buying one of those unless you are planning on going pro. Out of all the steps, the vibrator is the most needed and sometimes overlooked step because air pockets in concrete can cause catastrophic failures due to concretes nature. Hope this helps.

Can you recommend any software for modeling these builds beforehand? I've looked at a few free options and they're either terrible to use or lack the features needed to see small details like the distinction between a footer and the block thickness. Or lack the ability to add "finishing" walls inside of basement walls.
