Thank you! I really like it with oak. Especially since white oak can be pretty yellow-green with an oil finish

Super cool video! On the buffer question: yes, not only is this totally normal, it’s necessary if you want to stay in business. Unforeseen costs are inevitable. So always add a buffer. Calculate all your costs, your hours, overhead costs etc…. That’s what it costs YOU to make it. Than on top of that you add profit. This can account for setbacks, but ideally is used to help your business grow. I hope that helps. And remember: it’s not taking advantage of the client, you determine price, the client determines the value. (I’ve got these tips from “the futur” a great KZbin channel really worth checking out.

Thanks! I really appreciate the comment, super helpful. In my corporate job I was a project manager and used to estimating projects based on time and materials and then adding some extra for contingency in case we needed it and we almost always did since estimates were based on what we thought would happen but things never go quite to plan. And thanks for the channel suggestion, I'll check it out!

Timeless Design 👍
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
😊 thanks, that's what I was going for. My alternate script was going to be about how I stole a 500 year old design, which is true, so I'm glad to read your comment and recognize the timelessness of this piece
@themeandrousengineer3 ай бұрын
I commend you for taking a leap and giving things a try. It's something I wish I could do but it's always terrifying. On the question of estimates, for engineering projects we may take all of our quotes, all of our labor, add it all together, and then multiply by a percentage we find acceptable. this could be anywhere from 10-20%. It may feel like inflating your pricing too much, but it will most definitely give you some buffer. Project creep is real. This steals your time and money for things you didn't anticipate.
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
Thank you! And that project creep is real. Just one more detail or thing you didn't plan on doing can really add hours to a project.

Glad you’re pursuing this. Table looks great. A little dark for my liking but it’s about what the client wants. Good luck, mate!

Thank you! In hindsight a light sanding after ebonizing would have taken away some of the black and made it lighter, but it does look more brown in person than on video.

Congrats on going full time with the channel. Good luck! As for the pricing process, I have never accurately charged for the projects I've made because they will always have to meet my expectations going out the door. I have found those to be significantly higher than those of the clients. Additionally, I don't charge for my learning time, which occurs a lot on bespoke builds. 🙂
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
Thank you and I appreciate the advice on pricing. I try not to charge for learning too and try not to charge for filming which is a whole extra challenge. Thanks for the comment!

Fair enough. It looks nice and matches what my client was looking for. But it is pretty dark. Glad you like the rest. I'm a fan of this type of joinery. Super satisfying and strong, and not that hard to make!

Great build! Simple but a timeless elegance. Yeah… I have the same issues with my estimations too. The only way I can get to what I think is close is to add 20% to my estimate as my quote. Which is like your “premium”. If I manage to get it done quicker then I pass that saving on to the customer.
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate the insight. I like the idea to "refund" the customer. I typically take a 50% deposit and 50% at delivery. Your method makes sense to deliver and charge a little less if it is warranted.
@LittleShadowWoodcraft3 ай бұрын
@ I do 50% down as well, just to cover the expenses of the materials at least and some of my time acquiring it and doing some planning. 😀

Looks like you did a good job I noticed when screwed the top on you did not leave room for wood movement I sure a small table there should not be a lot of movement
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
The screws have a wide, flat head like a washer and the holes are elongated in those corner braces so there is room for wood movement for the top and shelf. The shelf shouldn't move much with its size though. I went over that part pretty fast but good question, definitely don't want to not account for the movement and have the top crack
@joshuatilley18873 ай бұрын
Your picture at 7:48 is close, but a little off. The 1 3/4" sections should actually have length cosine(30°) = 1.732". The error is 0.018" which may be negligible, I guess.
@keatonbeyerwoodworking3 ай бұрын
Interesting. Well the good news is I actually ended up making the legs slightly undersized from my plan which was probably closer to your measurement.
