It's a great career! I am a retired construction civil engineer. There are many types of civil engineering Structural engineering. ... Construction engineering and management. ... Geo-technical engineering. ... Environmental engineering. ... Transportation engineering. ... Water resources engineering. ... Materials engineering. I chose construction because of the diverse methods of construction techniques. I excelled at concrete and also had an structural engineering background. I traveled all over my country working on small, big and a few mega jobs. I really enjoyed doing bridges. Good luck with your pursuit. It's hard work at first but with patience it becomes second nature.

Very Informative, I was just confused, how they stop the flow of water while constructing the dams?
@johnnyvivic87302 жыл бұрын
They don't, they are built on flowing rivers and the concrete is inserted underneath, like at 1:47. Sections are usually heavy enough to resist the flow of water adequately during insertion. If water flow is vigorous enough, then a diversion will be built, perpindicular to the water flow, to divert water form the river elsewhere while the main dam is built. P.S. when you see a dam and it has water up to the top on one side and water almost at the bottom on the other side, know that the side with the water at the top is the reservoir, which is filled up after the dam is complete.
@elena65162 жыл бұрын
I dont know what kind of long-winded pseudo-answer Mr Vivic is providing above. The answer to your question is that they divert the water around the construction site. Simple as that. Build a channel or channels that allow water to flow around wherever they working. When the dam is complete, they plug the channels. In some cases, they might build a structure called a cofferdam or caisson in the river itself and perform construction within the de-watered cofferdam area.
@elena65162 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyvivic8730 1:47 is some unrelated stock footage. The dam in that scene has already been built. No, they do not simply lower pre-cast concrete blocks in place within the river. They cannot become monolithic structures that way.

That was really cool. This is the best way we know how to make clean energy right now. Unfortunately, in my country Pakistan, we are facing severe flooding once again and we still haven't built enough dams. We are also facing a 20% electricity shortage..
@addarzful2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, couldn't agree more. I am also one of the Pakistanis who came to see this video after hearing and realising how several people and their homes & businesses got severely affected by recent disastrous flood incident. I pray to Allah and hope that in near future we are able to build such dams to avoid such flood disasters and also able to generate massive hydro electricity and get rid of thief organization like k-electric.
