I also live in an area with heavy clay soil. How do you penetrate your clay soil with just the pressure of pvc?

My advice would be to get an auger drill bit you attach to a drill and drill a pilot hole of sorts to insert your watering inplement.

I'm in California. I have planted palm trees and had them grow with little to no care. But... this one location in the back yard, I had replaced dying palm trees three times! It's near the edge of a hill and it gets almost constant sun. Everything I planted died or was stunted no matter how much I watered them (big plants, small shrubs, dry heat loving plants... didn't matter). I just could not bear digging up and replacing these palms yet again. So, I made your deep watering stick and within one week both stunted palm trees that were struggling for a year started to open up and grow! It really works! THANK YOU!

Thanks soooo much!! Just built mine. Worked awesome!!! The kids were amazed we were "drilling" with water.. I added a quick connect at the end so I could quickly connect and disconnect it to my garden hose. Excellent! Hope it helps bring back our fruit trees that look dead after the freeze we got here in Orlando Florida in January 2018. Great video and perfect instructions... Best DIY video I've seen. Well done Sir.

Brilliant! I was going to dig a hole & leave a pipe through which the water flows into the root system, but this is way easier. As the tree gets bigger, you can probably use a longer pipe to water even deeper.
@robonik216 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I am in California also and we have had problems with our trees due to dry weather and hard clay soil. Top watering is very inefficient for trees as the water will evaporate before it soaks down to the main root system. Mulching or putting a nice layer of mulch can help slow down evaporation and your deep watering suggestion is a good one. However, I need to point out that one thing that is equally important is that the roots need oxygen as well as water to grow. It is a myth that they rely only on CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) so it is important not to flood the root system excessively to the point of excluding oxygen. And aerating the soil is also of considerable benefit. Thank you for your excellent video and economical suggestions. Yours is much more economical than store-bought deep watering tools. And I like the music you put at the start too! :-)

Yeah we used this trick on city trees with a portable tank and water pump. The only difference was the 'spike' was metal. I also wondered if the large hole left behind would have any negative impact on the tree/roots. We would usually go back to trees a couple times during the summer and i always tried using the same entry, so as to not have 5 deep holes around the tree. Any thoughts Bob and Bob!?
@bfhoward17 жыл бұрын
neb9000 no problem with that small hole, reusing the same hole is great, easier, but don't over water. The amount of water should be enough to compensate evaporation. So, how much is enough? That is art, and skill.

$24 all parts / glue Lowe's central Texas. It might be helpful to really think of this in terms of two different parts: 1.Drilling & 2.Watering. In my case once I really understood that I need to drill then I slowed down a little and just tried to get the tool all the way in. Central TX this appears to be possible without additional tools. This took a couple of days with mixed results. Once holes are created you might have a better idea how to make them. And once they are there you should be able to use them again. My water hose connector was too weak to hold pressure while drilling. It broke -- the two parts simply would not hold. A second trip I emerged with a slightly different version. So far it is working better. Teflon glue is a little messy. First day it might be good to thoroughly wipe excess off. Day two it is still wet but much harder to get off skin, etc. $26 ( trip 2 ) additional parts plus 8 year old's desire to make a PVC blow-dart gun; also soil and compost.

Have you experienced any settling of the soil around the holes that you are poking? Curious to know if the high pressure stream of water is eroding away soil which would lead to air pockets. Air pockets eventually collapse causing the soil to settle. Great video btw, and ingenious invention.

just inherited a piece of land with various fruit trees in it. some are doing fine and some are not.. .the ones that are in worst condition is the type of trees that id love most... barely any leaves left on the tree and it is in 4yrs of age (35ft height) with a sign on negligence shown on it . .. kinda panic and start doing research that night and saw this video... thanks for giving me hope and a fighting chance to save that tree... made the 1st version of the tube yesterday and manage to penetrate only 1feet in the ground due to large diameter of the pipe and low water pressure... start my NPK 16 about 200gm and distribute into 2 holes made by the hose and mark it with a bamboo stick for future refference. today im off to the hardware store and bought the smallest in-diameter and taper with and end cap and drilled some small holes in it and we`ll see how it goes, plan to dilute another 200gm of the NPK in a 20liters of water and sprinkle it on top of the soil after i made another pass of the smaller pvc. hope to get a 4ft penetration today ...... thanks Bob !

Thanks for sharing your method. I can't wait to try it on a 5 yr old maple whose growth is seriously stunted. I have a question after watching your PVC pipe go deep into the ground so easily. You say to "drill around the tree" and then water with your deep root irrigator. Are you drilling first using some other method ? The soil where I live - central Texas - is rocky and compact so I cannot imagine being able to insert the pipe without breaking the irrigator.

I understand that you use the 3-foot PVC pipe to "drill" the irrigation holes around the plant/tree. But do you then get water to the roots simply by filling up the basin around the plant or do you stick the three foot pipe back in the holes each time to force the water down to the roots?
@BobMongiello7 жыл бұрын

So the water uses the hole from the basin around the tree to get to the roots, We just redo the hole after a few weeks to keep it open ? At first I was thinking each time we water we drill a hole and water directly at the root. What about after drilling the hole using a Tree Gator to water the tree?

Hey Bob, thanks for the great tips. We successfully did this to our three new Sissoo trees that have been struggling due to our poor watering habits. We ran into a peculiar situation with one of the trees.. we stuck three holes about 3.5’ deep, but when we put the hose on to water.. it never filled up like the other two. Very strange, and a little concerning, we’re wondering where in the world all the water could be going since it never comes back up from that trees holes... we ran the hose on full for four minutes just to see if it would ever fill up, but it never did. Any ideas?

This is awesome. You know, if you use this method to apply aerobic, fungally-dominant compost extract down into the soil and below any compaction layers, you won’t need to keep doing this over and over. Your plants will grow amazingly well, and you won’t need to irrigate or apply any chemicals anymore. You will also build soil very rapidly. It’s a win-win! See Dr. Elaine Ingham’s videos for more details.
