Are you looking for the perfect Dj booth? Why not build your own? I needed one with plenty of storage for my record collection. This is a sort of "off the cuff" video demonstration for assembling a Dj booth/audio desk using parts from IKEA. It was inspired by something I saw on the Dj Tech Tools website. Some of the information on their site was outdated & incorrect so you may find this video to be a nice supplement. I'm no handy man so please be easy on me. #djbooth #ikeahack #djpuzzle
Check out my current setup on Instagram / bqbzro9baxz I have my decks set up battle style with a Kontrol S8 mixer in the middle.
PART ONE - Kallax Bookshelf
Let's start with the Kallax. The Kallax is the base of the desk. You can use one if you like or two if you desire a deeper desk with more storage space for records.
Two pairs of Capitas for mounting the shelves. You'll need two small square shelves for speakers and one long shelf for laptops and controllers.
Despite the daunting instructional guide the Kallax was quite simple to assemble and it took about 15 mins. Here is a complete Kallax in all of its glory.
PART 2 - Capita long shelf leg available at Amazon amzn.to/2Hqm1Xf
This bolt comes with the Capita. We'll us it to mount the Capita to the Kallax and later to mount the shelves.
Find a good spot to mount the Capita and drill a hole in the Kallax top big enough for the bolt to screw through like you see here. Let's move on. (I had a small hand held vaccuum available to clean up dust from the particle board.)
Next we'll attach the Capita to the Kallax to get a feel for how we want it positioned. I would not recommend twisting it on like I did here in the video as it will scratch the surface of the Kallax. What you should do is screw the bolt in to the Capita from the bottom with a wrench. As you can see it's quite sturdy. You could have the angle facing in or out. Up to you.
Measure where you placed the first hole and follow the same steps on the other end of the Kallax. You could place a piece of paper or thin cardboard down before attaching the Capita to prevent it from scratching the Kallax surface. I've made some mistakes as this was my first build and I managed to scratch the surface a little. I pretty much went at this guerrilla style so please feel free to do what you think is best.
PART 3 - Lack long Laptop shelf
Now let's move to the first of three shelves. The long shelf is for your laptop and controllers. Place the long shelf on the Capitas while they are mounted to the Kallax and use the sharpy to draw in guides for your screw holes on the underside of the long shelf. Now remove your Capitas and line them up. Use a small drill bit and drill small holes at the guide points so you can easily screw your smalls screws in. Do the same for the other Capita and connect the top shelf to the Kallax by lining up the Capitas to the bolts and twist the bolts in from the underside of the Kallax top.
Part 4 - Lack speaker shelves
Let's move on to the small speaker shelves. Drill a hole in through the top long laptop shelf like we did with the Kallax. We will use large bolts to connect the small shelves to the long shelf with the second pair of Capitas.
The bolts are not long enough in this case as the top shelves don't really match the rest of the desk and they are a bit thicker so I went to the hardware store to pick get longer bolts. I used the big plastic washer from the Capita bolts for support as you see here.
Now with your Capita removed do the same thing we did ealier and draw drill guides with the silver sharpy. Place the Capita dead center of the small shelf and place your guide dots. Use the smalls screws to attach the Capita to the small shelf and then connect it to the long shelf with the extra long bolt. Use a wrench to thighten the bolt. Follow the same steps for the second small shelf and you 're done.

For those who think the height is too low you can always add some legs like these ones from Amazon amzn.to/2VV8RVv - for me it's the perfect height. I'm 6'1 and I like to stack gear on it and keep my stuff in cases sometimes. All that can really add up to just the right height for me and I like the option of having that tiny bit of wiggle room.

Looks awesome but the height is uncomfortable. Would be better to add some legs under the Kallax or to make one more intermediate shelf under the TTs about 12cm. Your hands-elbows on the TT to be approx 90degrees. Now depends on each user height. I put for mine one more Lack under the TTs and I can store under it my accesories, headphones, needles etc...and it brings the height right where I want without making me humpy.

I think you should consider reinforcing the back with either solid sheets across the expedit/kallax holes, and/or struts and/or braces www.audioasylum.com/cgi/vt.mpl?f=vinyl&m=1018246 Try shoving the expedit side ways - even with glue and a bunch of records weighing it, it should shift a bit. I am currently researching ways to best reinforce the Expedit. Seems like t and l braces screwed into the shelving parts along with some pieces of wood slats Personally I just clamped a Besta on top of an Expedit - probably not the best as the clamps will surely warp/buckle the wood a little. But it got the job done 'sticking' them together for $30-40 of clamps. The Besta is big enough to fit three decks in regular position, just barey. I use some extra boards as plinths and in case want to use battle position ever. Still need some CDJ stands to whack on top though.

Hi, I'm 6'1. The top of my turntables (platter) when they're in the cases comes up to my waste and without cases up to my pockets. I can put the tops of my cases underneath to get more height which works great. I didn't want it too high because I like to stack gear on it, sometimes for example I'll cover the turntables and I'll put my Maschine MK2 on top. I pinned a comment about adding legs to get some more height out of it.Hope that helps.

Dee Dee i did some measurements and tbh it seems like the one with thrree rows would be a bit too tall...i’d rather have the 2 rows one and the legs hightened to the maximum, then if you add the height of the decks too, it’s pretty much alright i’d say. And then you’d have a bit of room for your feet to go under the table, which is good for your back since you have some wiggle room and not have to bend a bit ..

Thanks! That would be too heavy for this what I did in the video but I'm sure there is way to build it for heavier speakers. The problem would be with the smaller shelves. Commit honestly I'm 6'1" and I'm not hunched over. With the equipment it is 35" which is DMC height and good for scratching but you can always add risers and or feet to it. There are short legs you could use and another shelf for the top. I've seen other peeps do this. I wanted it lower because I sometimes leave my gear in the cases which adds also adds a bit of height. Nice! No problem. Oops my pic didn't load. I'll reup it and send to you. The base of it is super strong. I now have roughly 800 records in it and the gear on the top. The shelf has a Furman power conditioner and a touchscreen Toshiba on it and then the Yamaha HS5 speakers on the little shelves. One thing you might want to consider for extra support is another set of the plastic disks/washer (or metal if you can find them) for both sides of the speaker shelves. I have them just underneath but one on top would protect it from being scratched and would reinforce it as well. That's the one thing I'm thinking about changing. It doesn't need it right now don't get me wrong I published this video 3 years ago and it's still going strong but I do think about that part from time to time and wonder how it's doing lol. It say's the width is only 30", so that doesn't seem like it would be very tall? Does the height work or are you hunching over?
@tjnme5667

Your confusing Width and Height... Width is how "wide" is its... Height is how tall it is. 30 inches (not even 3 foot)would be a no go I would think.

Thanks. The height is 30" with turntable top of platter is 34". I often keep my in cases which adds a couple more inches of height. If you like to sometimes set gear up on top of your turntables like I do (midi controllers, iPad, etc) this is the perfect height for someone who is 6'1" You can add feet if you want yours to be taller.

The Kallax still seems a little low, I’m sure you can get feet like the Capita but a little smaller to put on the bottom of the Kallax and lift it a little

How did you connect the 2 Kallax bookcases? Are they attached or still free standing?

Casey Morris In this case I did not connect them but you could try using something like a "Strap Tie".

I wouldn't mess with that, they are made from cheap pressed particle board type material.

.How it hold up under the weight over time? Anybody else do this with the Kallax? I just want to make sure my decks and records will be safe if I dont overload it.

+Jocelyn Silver / No1AtAll I can honestly say that it is just as sturdy today as it was when I made this video. It's holding up nicely.

How do you drill a hole big enough to fit the capita through? Sorry not very good with DIY
@Djpuzzle
@Djpuzzle 3 жыл бұрын
I started with a small drill bit and just moved it in a circular motion to make the whole larger. There is probably a better way but this worked for me.

Thanks for your video but your desk is too low as kallax is about 77 cm, The right confortable height for a DJ booth is 90 cm to 95 cm... There's differents Ikea solution to fix this, like adding a kitchen countertop standing on 15 cm support legs.. This countertop solution can also create a deeper and larger work space, for bigger configurations...
@Djpuzzle
@Djpuzzle 9 жыл бұрын
Nelson Leeroy I know thanks. It's a matter of preference. I like to scratch and use controllers so this is the perfect height for me. As you said there are options to raise it if you like but I like it low. I sometimes leave my gear in the cases which also adds more height to it. I'm not hunched over or uncomfortable and I'm 6'1"
