great job and please take this as a tip. Rather than so many concrete piers, you could have used a 2x8 or 2x10 with 3-4 concrete blocks. You can space them up to 8 feet.

Little tip for leveling and lining up the concrete slabs. Use a string that you level first. That way you just line it up to the string and throw a level on it.

@@joshuaconstable6323 tie a string from one end to the other where you want the blocks to be. Adjust the string so it's to the top height of the block where you want it to be. Make sure it's nice and level. Then when you put the block on, just like them up with the string and check for level on the block itself too

I used the exact same approach as you of doing the 4 corners first then going to the centre beam and then all the other deck blocks just kind of follow. It seemed way more intuitive to me to get the 4 corners super solid and level with each other and then doing the rest. I did this before I saw your video and similiar approach and I was like hey maybe this is a legit way to do it after all! haha it worked for me. I like your style and I learn a lot from your videos. Keep up the good work!

right before I watched this vid I had copied someone's comment on another vid: You should have put each corner post, then took your 10 ft board, stand it on edge, and tack it to lowest point (highest elevation of ground, your 2 inches or whatever above the ground on your 1 corner,. Tack it on the side of the post, then put your level on the side of it, raise other end until level screw to post, now go around full perimeter. Then it's a simple matter to mark each corner and cut the posts flush with level, and then every other post you add, you just get it plumb, tack it to the level board, and cut it flush with level.

Sorry Ray but this would not pass the permit phase. However it looks nice but serious over kill with huge cost. First, for your setup only four deck blocks are needed. The rest can be supported with hangers. 2. Never place a shimmy on a deck block. It will erode over time causing warping. 3, always use deck flashing tape whenever possible. It’s a great barrier and prolongs the life of the wood. 4. Gravel and sand is fine but always slope the deck away from the house for draining purposes. I use to work in the permit office for jobs like this. But again nice job.
@DIYRAY
@DIYRAY 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that it’s over kill but since I’m paying for it the cost is worth it to me. Also as for the shims I’m using pressure treated only in a couple of places so that is not an issue. Also flashing was use only in certain location where the wood would be exposed to the weather. Is it Perfect? No it isn’t but it’s perfectly sound and stable it looks great. Thanks for the feedback and please remember to subscribe to the channel and like the video.
@mjdamato
@mjdamato 3 жыл бұрын
@@DIYRAY Those shims will rot - pressure treated or not. Once a PT piece of wood is cut the treatment is compromised (unless you treat the cut ends). Plus, those shims are made with cutoff pieces with the grain running vertically. So, the weight of the deck will only work to separate the grain and allow water to penetrate.
@DIYRAY

12:41 @@DIYRAY First. The way you had it at 4:20 was the correct way. You should of left it like that and make the other and the same so all 2x8 would meet on the deck blocks. Second. You can't use wood peace's to level the joist 12:40. The 2x8 must seat all the way in the deck blocks. You should raise the blocks.
@DIYRAY
@DIYRAY 4 ай бұрын
So let me get this straight, I shimmed a couple of blocks, so it will meet the deck. Did you see how many blocks that’s underneath the deck that is lying on it? Really? Okay if you say so.
@thedoitguy
@thedoitguy 4 ай бұрын
@@DIYRAY i agree, you dont need that many blocks. But if you use them it have to be installed properly. For example, from the inspector point of view: if your deck is not higher than 24" you don't need railing. But if you put railing, it have to be installed to meet code. Otherwise people (who move in after you) trust in it, can fall and hurt them self's. Not to have does blocks is ok. Have them incorrectly is not ok. I hope this helps with your future projects.
