I really like the logic behind this video. You talk not just about the “what” but also the “why”. The thought process around the top & the bottom of the bag was very helpful.

Simon when are you going to finish the £10 to £2000 challenge??

That's a good bag Simon. As a shorter hitter I have always loaded the top end with many clubs. I need a variety of long clubs to reach long par 4's, short par 5's and long par 3's. When your longest par 3 is 225 into the prevailing wind you have to have choice at the top end! At the bottom I don't feel I need a lot of wedges. Now I'm getting shorter off the tee I need my gaps to be correct at the top more than the bottom. Oh to be young again!

Hi Simon channel follower, i have a total of 4 bags! All started by accident all cost £350-450, but would easily make there cost and beyond again. All clubs are game improvement 2015-2021 TBH there is not 5 yards in 2022 Mavrik max irons or the 2015 xr16 irons that cost £200. Equipment marketing has alot to answer for. I'll take a 2015 driver 44.5inch £75 that goes 275 yards over my 2022 SIM2 45.5 inch which goes the exact same distance.

As a LH, sixtyish, recreational golfer returning to the game after a 20 year absence I have loved building my bag from scratch. With forgiveness and price at the top of my list I was drawn to a bag consisting mainly of Ping and Cleveland. Driver - 10.5 degree regular Ping G20 3 Wood - Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo Hybrids - Cleveland Launcher 3 Hybrid and Ping G25 4 Hybrid Irons - 5- PW Cleveland Launcher XL HALO Irons (graphite) Wedges - 50, 54, & 58 degree Cleveland CBX 2 (with an old Cleveland chipper waiting to find a place in the bag!) Putter - This is where I lost my head - a 2014 Wilson 8802 So with a new stand bag thrown in If all came to around £1,200, so now I just need to get my hernia fixed and I'll be back on the course all guns blazing!

I started playing golf as a teenager. For my 21st birthday, my parents bought me some Wilson Johnny Miller clubs. I hated them. Since then, Mizuno Bell 3 irons (3-SW), then Ping Zing2 (1-SW) - children intervened. Now, getting back, starting afresh with clubs - P790 (4-PW) and 56 & 60 MG3 wedges, Scotty Cameron putter, Stealth woods (driver-3-5). Can’t get over how clubs have changed. Now, decided I want more feel in the short irons, so adding Miura KM700 5-PW, and adding 51 wedge. Still need to get my head around the distances of the new clubs.

All of my clubs are older. I switched back to some oversized Cobra irons as I was lacking in some confidence. This is why it is so good to hang onto a few sets of clubs to suit you game at a particular time.

I've just rebuilt most of my bag in the last few weeks with very similar mindset. Ive dropped a PXG 0211 in favour of a SLDR mini 12 degree and bought a 5 hybrid into the bag for options beyond my 5 iron (as well as a new set of one length irons vs my old ping shovels which were fitted 6 years ago). The crux is that I'm a 12 handicapper with previous typical driver ball speed at 160-165. I've stopped taking the ego pill and focussing on consistency. My last four rounds with this setup I've averaged 81.25 stroke play score vs the 4 rounds before that with my old bag being 88. I now have next to no penalty shots averaged, no lost balls in 3 rounds and broke 80 for the first time ever. My drives sitting ~20 yards behind the lads is still something I'm learning to get over but beating them each round makes it all worthwhile!

I went top name and brand new with my driver, 3 wood, driving iron and putter because those are the clubs i struggle with and need the most forgiveness from and went budget on my irons and wedges because i strike them fairly well and its worked out for me. I didnt go bankrupt building my bag and i actually enjoy playing again.

This summer I put alot of thought and research into setting up my bag. Main goal was to simplify the setup. Old Scotty Cameron Squareback 2 had to stay because afew years back went to a putter fitting and fine tuned the lie, loft, length and weight to my putting style. My matching Cobra S9-1M offset driver 9.5° and fairway 3,5,7 woods 15.5°,18°,21° lasted the test of time. Decided to be fitted for the Ping G425 irons 5-LW with 4-9 having fairway wood technology built in and the PW-LW having Glide 3.0 milled face technology. Being built as I am writing this. Hopefully this setup will keep everything flowing together.

SIMON: Let's have a video of custom-fitting yourself for your existing irons. How to determine proper length (how to lengthen and shorten your clubs which can all be done at home), checking loft and lie, etc. The cost of checking and adjusting loft/lie here in the US is approximately $5 USD per club. Fitting costs $150-200 USD but I believe most can fit themselves fairly well with the right instruction/direction (hence, the suggestion for a video.) I think a lot of players would be better off fitting themselves for their existing irons than going out and buying different new/used set. Thoughts?

Since you’re not afraid to recommend old clubs, I have some blanket advice for nearly every golfer that isn’t sure about their irons/wedges: Karsten has you covered. Get some 80s/90s PING irons. Eye/2, Zing/2, ISI/K, are all astonishingly forgiving and honestly, damn controllable/flightable. They are a decent in-between size anyone can play. And they are the best-feeling cast clubs of all time. Plus they’re old so they’re relatively cheap!

I did a bit of this over the winter getting ready for this year. Picked up JPX 919 Forged irons 4-GW for easily what I could sell them for now and even make a bit of cash. I did splurge on a used Titleist TSi3 driver, but I was upgrading from a Titleist 909 D3. I did manage to find a Titleist TS3 3 wood that was listed as a TS2. Therefore no one was interested in it and it was like brand new. I could move it along now for more than I paid for it. I also got an older Titleist hybrid 818 H2 for not a lot of cash. All in all everything except the driver was less then expected value. My wedges are original spin milled vokeys that will soon be outlawed for competition. They are awesome and I love them so I will play them until I'm not allowed too anymore. I did swap out an old Scotty Cameron for a new Sider putter. Even money.

Perfect advice to build “middle out” from a well-fit-to-your-game iron set. For me the bottom was pretty easy to sort, but as a reasonably fast swinger I’ve had to experiment with combos of hybrids and fairways quite a lot to find a comfortable, consistent-distance extension of my iron set that can hit a long par 3 or occasionally get a par 5 in two on a lucky day. Keep the good stuff coming, Simon!

I am definitely looking for a newer set of irons but I think I might even go down to 10 years cause the ones I am using are at least 20 years plus but they were hardly used. Perimeter weighting says everything about how old they are!! They are doing the job for as much as I play but I think something with some newer technology would make it a bit easier!!😀

Just to put out there, if people would like to try out second hand clubs they can rely on, Callaway Pre-owned have a 14 day trial period for they clubs, you just have to pay the return postage which is normally £4.99 or so! I bought the Epic Max LS for £229, used it for 14 days and then returned it because it didn't outperform my Cobra Speedzone. Easy 👊

Love my Epic Flash, it’s a canon, but if you get it a little wrong, will be reloading because the ball will be long gone, never to be seen again, being able to drive a par 4 green every once a while is worth the pain for that one feeling,

I like the idea of buying second hand, but its nearly impossible to find my fit. I'm not a standard club guy. +2 degrees lie angle, + .5" shaft length, oversize grips. You just can't find uses clubs that specific. I almost always have to buy new in order to get the custom build.

Hi Simon, got custom fit last week for a set of irons, the club he suggested after the fitting was mizuno 225 with shaft ½ inch longer, project XIO. Charged €70 for fitted. My strategy is completely the opposite when giving advice on how to build a bag. Everyone is going to buy a putter & driver so let's remove those clubs from bag construction. 2nd shots on the four Par 5s, the two tee shots into the longer Par 3s, and the 15 chips/pitches onto greens - these are the key clubs in the bag - get those clubs nailed, the rest is usually just shaft weight and grip size. Your handicap can easily be +/-5 shots if you get these clubs correct or not. Go and hit 9,7,5 woods and check out peak heights, decent angles, carries, and shot shapes - the same for 6,5,4,3 hybrids - really spend the time thinking about and building this part of the bag. Next, try and figure out the loft&bounce that will be your goto chipping/pitching club around the green - not the other way around - i.e. after you find your irons, then pick your wedge lofts - for me, this is completely backward - getting those chips & pitches inside 6 feet is a game-changer for your handicap - therefore, pick these lofts, bounces & grinds first - and then you will have your scoring clubs set. Irons are last - I've found it really comes down to does a heavy feeling club help you be more accurate (then choose it) or does it hurt your rhythm - then keep going lighter. Once you have the weight of the shaft you like, there are many heads to pick - and you will only have to buy the irons up until your first hybrid/wood.
