Heres my homemade moonshine still i made it in a few hours and spent 100$. Works very well once you get a hang of it. This is my first time running some shine. Funny drunken video trying to explain how i put it all together. Count how many times i say obviously lol

I run a somewhat similar setup only using a 6 gallon stainless steel pot still and I use 1/2" copper lines. I distill sugar wash and when I use turbo yeast I can get 150 proof on my 1st run, crystal clear. I run mine 3 times and end up with 170-180 proof which I have my own label for when bottling. People are very interested in buying my shine but I won't sell it. (I like my house, freedom and such). I've been offered $50/750ml bottle and yes I turned it down, with regret. I simply give them away to family/friends. One tip I have is to use a container that fits inside your condenser coil to make an ice mold. Make 2-3 of them. I find using those big pretzel/cheese ball jugs works well. Or use any other jug that fits. Even milk jugs and 2 liter soda bottles. Fill them with water and freeze them. That way you just drop them inside when it's time to run and top up with water. No ice to buy. Swap them out when they melt past usefulness. Another thing, don't believe all the hype in numbers. Some will tell you 175 degrees is the magic number and others 200. Trust me, whatever temp your still begins producing at is the right number for you. Pure ethanol boils at 174 degrees, why would anyone tell you that's when your production needs to start at? If you had pure ethanol why would you be distilling it? Depending on the % of alcohol in your wash, your still design, elevation above sea level, ect, your magic number can be anywhere between 175-205 degrees. Know this though, the higher the starting temp means the less alcohol in your wash. If your still won't produce until 205 degrees then you're only getting a low % alcohol out of it and is probably not worth distilling. If it starts at 178 then you're in for a good run. I can go on and on about yeast used, the use and over use of yeast nutrients, how many people fail to use malt or enzymes in corn whiskey, ect. Been doing this for years. Got my art down to a science and can make a 750ml bottle of 170 proof white lightening at under $3 cost. That's because I produce in bulk and in 10 bottle batches. I love this shit. Oh and another thing, I've written several articles on my experiences and advice on home distilling. Everything is a learn in progress. What you may think is gospel today may be fiction tomorrow. There are a lot of people giving bad advice and it's not their fault necessarily, they're just over anxious to spread what they think they know. I won't claim to know everything and won't bet my children's life on my own advice, but I've been around the block long enough to know I can learn from you and you from me. That's what the internet's for! Happy distilling!

I started with a little still like that. I have a 15 gallon keg still now. I use a 55 gallon barrel for mash, it makes about 5 gallons of good shine. I use a little pressure cooker like you have for a thump keg. I use the cracked corn from Tractor Supply. 5 lbs of corn and 5 lbs of sugar for every 5 gallons of water. I cook the corn to soften it. I bring it to temprature then cut it back a bit, the temp will adjust it's self, when it starts rising on it's own the alcohol is gone.

3/8 inch pipe is fine it will run just fine with that. Next time you make a worm wrap it around an old paint can it's the perfect size you want your worm to be, Tape is bunk man I use a compression fitting this means I can break it down fast and easy. It's great for cleaning and refilling your mash pot tightens by hand.

I was taught that the head(methanol) consist of the first 10 ml per gallon distilled. I usually take a little more to be on the safe side. It'll be the same color but will smell a little more like acetone. You'll be fine using these measurements but if your still worried just take a little more you'll still get plenty of whiskey

this looks so good man, very simple and well thought out. you said the first 2 ounces that come out are acetone and should NOT be drank. is there a way to determine when thee acetone or the mix produced is starting to become edible and safe? if its running clear like that are we good to go? as for your final product i myself have no problem drinking it straight, but what are some things you would recommend to add for flavoring. cinnamon sticks, cherries, and fruits. Thank you!

@@ericwhite7597 that's because it's removed when distilling the mash, it's the first thing that comes out bc it has the lowest boiling point. If you distill and keep all of it you'll have methanol, if you remove the first 10% of total volume you'll be good

@newj90
@newj90 11 жыл бұрын
No poison. Just throw out the first 4 ounces and your ok. Just keep the temp below the boiling point of water. Alcohol has a lower boiling point, you want alcohol to evaporate out and the water to stay in the still. The lower the temp the smoother the shine. I live in the blue ridge mountains in NC and have seen shine made the right way and the wrong way for years.

Its not a good idea to use ice in the cooler. Water temp should be around 15-20 degrees celsius in there for optimal percipitation. Flow is controlled by the heat on the other end. dont boil it though, alkohol boils at around 80 while water boils at 100 celsius as you said on the vid... You also gotto measure the alcohol level during destillation. One should stop at 50% on the second round for premium stuff.

like every thing but the ice in the worm. I have a small water pump in mine to recycle water back to sink I started putting a bag of ice in sink to keep water cool but you don't want it to cold that's y it's dripping slow and can bet your getting alot of condensation which is not the water vaper you want. I run at 160 and it runs smoothly not drippy 140 proof corn mash.

Yes it is safe for brewing beer but not DISTILLING. Aluminum is toxic, do not use it for distilling since the acid will dissolve some of it in the vapor. Use Stainless steel or copper

Yes that is correct some say because it's such a small set up it wouldn't matter but I always throw out at least 2 to 3 oz at first ...I've never had anyone get sick go blind or anything ....little test I do is burn test light a spoon full of the first drippings watch the color then try the good stuff and observe color you'll notice a difference pure 200 proof alcohol will burn clear impurities burn yellow

I heard somewhere when making hard liquor, your first few ounces are either methanol or acetone. How does that happen? It is what scares me from making Vodka's and stuff. I saw on thousand ways to die; some home brewers were celebrating their first batch and gulped down pure methanol (went blind and died). How can this happen?

It is a very small amount. That show is BS unless they made a large still. It is important to discard the first bit though.
@flip117100
@flip117100 10 жыл бұрын
Those are by products of fermentation. When you distil, you are essentially separating Ethyl alcohol and other volatile chemicals from water (Methyl and Acetone for example). But for the most part that show is bullshit.
@Greekwrestler900
@Greekwrestler900 9 жыл бұрын
They do methanol from ethanol from water. If you make a run that yields 1 gallon and that 1 gallon all goes into one container then the amount of methanol is so small it isn't dangerous. Now of you were to run a 50 gallon run then unless you have a 50 gallon container the entire run won't be mixed so the first of the run will be high in methanol. If you did have a 50 gallon container you could mix it all together which would dilute the methanol back to a safe level for consumption but it is obviously better to not do that since you don't want it to begin with. Methanol gives a bad flavor.

is it always 2 ounces that you throw out on each run? or is the amount of acetone produced directly volumetric to the amount you are making from the pot. so say 5 quarts = 2 ounces throw away or whatever. hope someone can help me not kill myself.
