Best saddle cut vid I've seen.. Some of these can be downright painful to watch. What type of wheel do you use on the grinder?

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. We use a Norton Avos sanding pad. You can see more in our grinding video on this channel: Grinders for Log Building.

huh? That saddle he cut is twice as wide as the log. When looking at the other logs in the home wall behind him, none of those cuts looked twice as wide as the logs. Then I wondered, maybe he was showing something else? ok, but what? Why he marked 2" at the top, but cut on the side? What was that all about? What is the saddle supposed to fit into? It would have been nice if he just showed how to fit the logs at 90-degrees in the wall he pointed to in back of him. Am I the only one who didn't get it? Also getting his leg that close (even with protective pads) to that chain, I'm surprised he still has a leg; Just one slip, and he'll bleed out in a few minutes. Yes, I know what I'm talking about...used to fell timber in the Deer River, MN area for many years.

I always just backbar the entire scarf.. without making that little center cut you've started with. Also... in the vernacular I was taught... all corner notches that overlap half the log below them are 'saddle notches'... even diamond notches are a type of saddle notch... even round notches are a type of saddle notch. Saddle notches are a family of notches... not one particular notch... at least that's what I was taught.

Wait a minute, you’re telling me that those holes in the level are to indicate the center line and not just there to hang it??

Curious is the a ratio or common measurement for the saddle width. Your video shows a 24 inch saddle with a log that size but is there a common measurement scale for smaller logs? I am trying to improve my skills by working on my saddles & notches building a dog house and I am using 8 inch diameter logs but want to know how big to cut the saddles. Is there a standard measurement you can use to calculate the saddle size?

Hello, For an 8” log and smaller, use 18” saddles.

@@bcschooloflogbuilding4385 - Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the help. It is good information to have. You are awesome. Love your video's. I am thinking about taking one of your full scribe log building courses when things get a little more open.
