Nathan, very interesting video. I never really gave much thought to what goes into a kiln...but now I have a much better idea. My favorite part of this video had nothing to do with the kiln build...as interesting as it is. It was that picture of you and your son in front of the water fall, you holding his hand. Thank the Good Lord there are still men out there who know how to be a DAD as well as a father....and there is a huge difference between the two. Kudos to you for being a DAD to your son!

All the negative. I thought it was informational. I left knowing more than I did prior to watching. Good video. People need to read commentaries before commenting cause allot of the questions are repeat, and for those who did not like the music you can always mute and watch the video. Be positive, life is too short. Keep making sawdust.

I'd be nice if the waterfall was close to the kiln, then you could put a small hydro unit in to make the electricity for the heater. I looked into them when we were looking for a house, and some only need an 18" drop to run efficiently. The nice thing about a hydro unit is it produces 24/7. Neat build though, great job! I like the fact that you didn't cut corners. I am looking into a kiln that uses passive solar, because the place I bought has 10 acres, mostly Walnut, and some big Oaks. I intend to cut it for my own use, not for sale. Anymore, I have 3 speeds, slow, slower, and stop, so I can wait on the wood to dry. Thank you for posting, Smiles!

Very Nice !! I was wondering if you had considered using spray foam insulation for between the studs and rafters? I know it is available in portable 3 - 5 gallon tanks. I would think that would have saved you some time with sealing the gaps and making the kiln airtight. Could you discuss your reasons for choosing the Fiberglass vs the closed cell spray foam?

Nice build, just out of curiosity why not go with a spray foam for the insulation? From what i hear its supposed to be a product that can be an insulation and vapor barrier and be air tight after its installed. I don't know the cost of it would have been but if its as good as i hear it would have saved you loads of time on insulating that place. Either way great build very methodical.

Sorry if this is a repeat and I'm way behind the time curve, too. Never put anything on the side (or roof) of a building that impedes the flow of water off a structure. The horizontal 1x2 will collect standing rain and then fungus and mildew can grow, especially on the north side.To extend the length of the vertical 1x2s just cut 45° ends and overlap the upper over the lower 1x2. There are easy fixes to removing the horizontal 1x2. I enjoy situations like this because I use the opportunity not to hide my mistake but to add an ornamental detail to the building.

what was the purpose of using the Styrofoam insulation , its only R 3 , by compressing the fibreglass insulation you probably took that R 3 away from it , also you should of cut the insulation instead of bending the sides up and stuffing it in , it should be a running fit, the low expansion was a waste of money you should have used the fibreglass that you trimmed of batts , ibet you never got more than r 12 , 2X6 stud wall , 6 " r20 fibreglass insulation covered with 6 mm poly , tape the seems , then take the rigid insulation and nail on outside of building , cover with plywood or siding. thats the way we keep the heat in up here in Canada anyways, the poly is your vapour barrier and would keep moister from lumber from rotting insulation and studs,
