Amazing !for ceiling in my house which is more than 150 years old we have a layer of wood flat wood planks laid over long wood supports .You have layed bricks directly on it. We the flat brick layer above it exactly like you have shown.Every year we have to use linseed oil to keep the wood moist plus it gives amazing shine to wood.And incase if one wants to do tiling above the roof he can wood is flexible to it can bear the weight.Here We use Jackfruit wood for vertical wood column of the roof which is light in weight but has very well strength to hold the weight of roofing tiles.And in the plaster which is still intact in most house.I can see small charcol pieces ( size of bajra k Dana), some straws , sometimes something sparkly thing in here.plaster is whitish in colour.which is not matching to sarrounding soil.In most part of the house bricks for Walls nd layer of roof is of flat bricks.
