How to build a Pool Hall for your model railroad.

You did an excellent job on your aging of the brick. Even if you did a new building look your side walls in back wall of a building you always secondary quality bricks were they don't match in colors. Only the front building is where they put the new brick so it always looks the same. Excellent job

Using the joint compound looks so much better then the way I was doing it. I used cornstarch mixed with ground pastels on a plastic kit, but the joint compound looks so much nicer, can’t wait to try it. Thank You for the inspiration

Hello Jason, just finished watching this video and your pool hall looks so real. I shared this video with a co-worker who is a photographer for fun and also sales his work. We travel into West Virginia to photograph old buildings and old railroad structures in the town of Bluefield and surrounding towns. I photograph due to I like to stretch build my buildings and like the weathering on the old buildings. When my friend saw your buildings he could not believe the amount of detailing and attention you place in your work. The photos I shoot are on Facebook under Johnny Robertson, I will be the one setting in the black viper with my take home vehicle on the other side. I really like this one, great character in this structure. I note you have a sign saying rooms for rent, so if they have toilets, or just one at the end of the hall, the plumbing will need air vents to work. I know you said smoke jacks, so I thought I'd just mention the others. Remember in Godfather II? Where young Vito disposes of the gun? Lots of pipes and such on top of those old buildings. Always a lot of inspiration Jason; I love your videos!

Nice job Jason. Here is a tip you may already know. I found on the back side and sometimes the sides that some of the bricks had turned a whitish color. Not sure what causes this. I believe it has something to do with how the bricks were fired while being made or something screwie with the mixing of the brick clay itself. The other thing that happened while building old brick structures was that the builders were quite often willing to use brick from old buildings that had burned. Those bricks were black. For the black use the same marker you used on the roof. Don't do a lot of bricks and the buildings I have seen the burnt bricks were well scattered in the wall. For the white bricks I found something called a gel pen that came in white. No idea when I bought mine but I did find it at Michaels. It looks like the manufacture was Y&C Gel Xtreme. White paint might work also. On these bricks I made no effort to do the whole brick as the leaching? was not uniform at all.

When painting acrylic over acrylic, it's good to seal between coats with a solvent based clear.......this way you don't have to worry about disturbing the paint work done previously. just a helpful hint.

If the first layer is completely cured you wont disturb it.

Thank you so much Lisa!!! I glue the signs on to a clear piece of plastic then glue that on the inside of the window. So the signs are in between to clear pieces. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!!!

Incredible work! Do you have a tutorial for how you did the “pool” sign on the side of the building? Is it a decal?

Thank you so much!!! I did the sign on my computer then printed it. I then cut the letters out with my xacto knife to make a stencil. I then put the stencil on the structure and dabbed on white paint with a sponge. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!!!

Fantastic build and thanks for the video! I have a question about the stone window sills. Shouldn't they be placed higher in line with the bottom of the windows? I don't recall ever seeing sills that low on a brick building. Thanks! Mike

Jason, I’ve been thinking about brickwork painting for a while and think i will use most of your method, but want a less opaque washed look on the bricks. What do you think about first painting a few individual bricks, then dab the different colors. When that’s done, the seal the brickwork before adding the joint compound. Sealing the bricks colors before adding the joint compound “mortar” would allow the joint compound to be more aggressively removed for a less washed out or opaque look. Once the joint compound “mortar” dries, then seal it again. Whaddya think?

The green is Light Avocado by Americana and I brushed it on. Good luck with the build. The windows are very delicate so take your time.

Jason would a cosmetic sponge work well for dabbling the paint on the bricks? Would this also work for plastic walls too? Thanks Kevin B.

I have used a cosmetic sponges before but I find that they are kind of smooth. You can tear them and pick at them to give it a little more texture. They do work!

Brick colors , especially on older buildings made of local brick can show a surprising variety of shades. Not all brick is red or brown. The local Clay's will have a lot to do with the coloring. Milwaukee for instance was famous for some of its local brick that gave it the moniker The Cream City. Other locals would have bricks of other colors en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cream_City_brick www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g59989-d583170-i119281403-Rock_County_Historical_Society-Janesville_Wisconsin.html This brick was widely exported even to Europe so its coloration really would not look out of place just about anywhere
