I literally had purchased all my lumber already, and was starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Watched your video, and I'm completely excited and remotivated. Mine is going to be almost exactly like this, only 1 foot longer, and a 1 foot ledge on 3 sides for added water garden

I fully get that! When it comes to this amount of water - it can be really daunting! Always wondering and hoping that it'll work! But it is always worth it in the end! I have since had to reinforce this build slightly, but that was purely down to my initial mistake that I mentioned in the video! Sounds like a great plan my friend, good luck! @riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 5 ай бұрын
Hey bud, thanks for watching! So to be fair, I’ve not really got anything for overflow protection, it’s literally just a case of heavy rain = overflowing pond 😂 to be fair, I don’t see it as a bad thing, it’s almost like a small water change

Thanks for the video mate! Im looking up alot of research atm as i want to build my first pond and i want to also do a raised one roughly this size too! Can i ask you what you did after this please regarding a pump for your pond? Like what pump did you use was there anything else added what is needed? Not as in lighting or anything but more so of things that are needed such as pumps, filters or whatever? Thanks man, liked and subbed
@riddlerreptiles

@@NorthernAnts24 legend, thanks for joining! So firstly I know I said it in the video, but let me just confirm here as well that I’d highly recommend using 4x2s instead of the 1.5x2.5s that I accidentally ordered 😂 With regards to filtration, it currently has a cheap external canister filter and also a hozelock box filter. Pump fed and it goes through both before returning to the pond. I did have a UV unit connected as well but that’s gone back to my dad’s pond now that we’ve built his. My plan for the future is to actually build my own massive filter for this pond - I’ve seen people use old wheelie bins and convert them into filters, so I’m going to try my hand at that at some point!
@NorthernAnts24

@@riddlerreptilesim gonna use sleepers or concrete blocks with timber for more support with my build, have a window and the outside tiled or something. @riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 3 ай бұрын
@@NorthernAnts24 ah well I’ve also got a sleeper pond build on this channel if you’re interested! 😂 definitely reducing risk by having sleepers or blocks, they’ll deal with the weight of the water a lot better, I was just on a bit of a budget. @riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 4 ай бұрын
@@EyezLikaFox̌ I wouldn’t say it’s absolutely necessary to be fair, I just got lucky that there was already one there before! My only piece of advice though would be to maybe dig into the ground by a foot or by as much as you can because that’s where the highest amount of pressure is, so it’ll help with structural stability 🙂

I'm going to do a similar build for North American native fish. Trying to decide whether I want you use wood or cinder blocks. I've got quite a bit of wood working experience and ZERO masonry or block work experience. However, I feel like the block pond would outlast wood. How long do you think a structure liike this made of treated wood can last?
@riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 4 ай бұрын
That sounds epic dude! Yeah I think as long as it’s done correctly the block pond would probably last longer (although I’ve seen block ponds fail and it’s not great 😂) A structure like this should last a good few years, I’d hope for a MINIMUM of 5 years, preferably more, but like we both know, the potential for the wood to fail is probably higher than the block

What size is your pond? Im planning a raised pond 8x8ft 3ft deep. A 1000 ltr of water is one ton so mine is around 9 tons of water ive been advised that wooden construction will not be strong enough.
@riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 6 ай бұрын
Hey dude, sorry for the late response! This pond is 6x8ft and around 2.5ft deep. I think it’s very dependent on the wood you use to be fair.. if you use the same wood as we did, it won’t be strong enough. 4x2s MIGHT be ok, 4x4s would probably be fine, and then you can start looking at railway sleepers that are 4x8 which would be absolutely fine, for sure!
@oliverskinner8962
@oliverskinner8962 5 ай бұрын
@@riddlerreptiles Most of the water pressure is at the bottom so couldn't he dig down 1.5 feet just past the soft top soil and build the wooden structure around the hole using 4x4" and 18mm inside and out ?
@riddlerreptiles
@riddlerreptiles 5 ай бұрын
@@oliverskinner8962 yeah if it’s possible to dig down for any pond that’s your best bet, for sure! If I do another in the future then that’ll be my plan. I’d rather have a half dug and half built up pond, over what I’ve done here on the concrete base
