130 psi max, failure between 130 and 300 psi, but most of the time it is far less than 300 with larger diameters. I have had mine for a short time and usually pump it up to anywhere between 60 psi and 100 psi. The stuff is ABS, Acrylic Butyl Styrene (sp) not Poly Vinyl Chloride. ABS has it's good and bad. Fatigue Failure is where the pipe swells a very small amount each time it is pressurized and there are failures associated with long term cycling. ABS: Doesn't Shatter - Good Relatively Low Pressure Failure - Bad Low point load failure - Good Somewhat flexible - Good Glue does not make a homogeneous joint and the glue may be subject to cyclic failure over time - Bad ABS is much more UV stable - Good PVC: All PVC, even schedule 10 will fatigue fail and when it does, if it is under pressure will shatter - Bad Higher pressure Failure - Good High Point Load Failure (hammer or sharp point) - Bad Rigid - Bad Low to no UV Stability - Bad Joints are homogenous - good, however failures are usually at fittings, esp tees, 90s, wyes where the 2 passages meet and there are sharp edges cast into fittings.

With just a 6 inch stub where I pressurize mine at 100 psi, that small air chamber will push all 10 gallons out of mine ending at 30 to 40 PSI left over after all of the water has been used.

I took a 2 gallon weed sprayer and added a shrader valve to it so it could be pumped up from most any air pressure device. Bike pump, etc...Added a dish spray nozzle to it as well. Painted it black and mounted it on a quick release system to my roof rack. Easy to remove and fill with water as well as put on the roof to warm up. Works great for showering, doing dishes or any clean up where water is involved. Cost a total of about $30 USD. Took about 20 minutes to build.

attach a tire valve to it somewhere, and when your using it, connect a portable air compressor to it,, the air entering will force the water out under pressure,, no matter the height.. then when done just turn off the compressor

Great video. Here's a another way to make things simple. Put a faucet spout on each end of the pipe. One you use to fill the pipe with and the other to shower with. You can adjust the water pressure by turning the handle to open and close while filling the pipe from the fill faucet end.

A safer version to pressure is to install 12 volt pump to system, they vary in price but works just like RV shower and can be used to clean off anything. super easy to install too. I am in process of starting to build a van and will be posting entire build. Ford E 350 extended cab.

For the record- ABS are the black sewer/waste pipes, PVC are the white water/feed pipes. They are different types of plastic- however both are non-toxic. Best, *A.
@craigcorson3036
@craigcorson3036 7 жыл бұрын
ABS plastic pipe will hold a LOT more pressure than 18 PSI. Even white PVC, which is not as thick, is rated for 600 PSI! You would need a different sort of pressure relief, of course. If I were making one of these, I would have a separate pressure reservoir, since when the tank's full of water, there's little room for air. I would also use the full ten feet of the pipe you bought, instead of cutting four feet off of it. That would give you another two and a half gallons of water.
@tonyronco4040
@tonyronco4040 5 жыл бұрын
A few corrections: 1.) TThe black pipe is made from ABS (As Grant read from the ID strip on the pipe) and it is NOT Schedule 40 ... The black ABS pipe & the fittings are DWV (Drain Waste Vent) design, which NOT a pressure rated piping system (because the system is vented). The typical test is 10 feet of hydrostatic pressure, which equals 4.3 PSI. 2.) The ABS has its own material specific primer and glue, both which need to be used. The video did not show use primer and used the wrong glue. 3.) Schedule 40 (White PVC) Pipe that is 1/2" diameter is rated at 600 PSI ... HOWEVER the Schedule 40 (white PVC) in the diameter size shown, 4" has a 220 PSI rating. NOTE: Again, the pipe and fittings shown are DWV black ABS which is not pressure rated. 4.) It is NOT recommended to use plastic pipe to contain air pressure. Because of the thick wall, if the pipe will fails under pressure, it will do so catastrophically and with the rapid expansion of the compressed air potentially sending "grenade" shards of plastic flying. The 18 PSI air pressure max in the video is conservative, but realize that manufacturers still don''t recommend air pressurizing plastic piping systems, and that for DWV pipe and fittings (black ABS) they are not water pressure rated by design. Be safe out there.
@KombiLife

@@tonyronco4040 agreed - you really got to be careful if you're going to add pressure to a ABS pipe. As you said it's not advisable so if in doubt, don't!

Thank the three of you very much for this informative vid regarding the construction of a PVC solar shower it truly is the best one I have seen to date! your humour just made it all the more pleasant to see. I will use your plan and idea for my template to construct and build my solar shower for my van... Put in a 180 elbow to make a second tube doubling the water size. Put on two 90 degree elbows and 4 feet of end tube to have the two halves one on each side of the van. Four 90 degree elbows and you can make a complete rectangular closed system that would have three times as much water capacity

Very interesting and handy. I'd still use Schedule 40 PVC over sewer pipe. Also, consider using air compressor fittings to pressurize the tank. Another thought is to use spray on bed liner (spray can) or the Krylon Flex Seal spray paint.

I have an idea, if you make tube able to turn vertical for taking shower. Thath would make huge difference in pressure.
@lukkassuhn6761
@lukkassuhn6761 5 жыл бұрын
Only helps while the tube isn't getting down near empty. What I would like to do is install some handcrank lifts/jacks that could raise the horizontal tube(s) at least one foot higher, maybe two feet higher if its affordable. Another point to consider: 'height pressure' is caused by the elevation gap between the source and the exit. Meaning a tub you can kneel in without getting dirty would allow the use of a longer hose for greater pressure.

A few corrections: 1.) The black pipe shown in this video made from ABS (as Grant read from the ID strip on the pipe) and it is NOT Schedule 40 design ... The black ABS pipe & the ABS fittings shown are DWV (Drain Waste Vent) design, which NOT a water pressure rated piping system (because the system is vented). The ABS has its own material specific primer and glue, both which need to be used. The video did not show use primer and did not use ABS glue (the video used the wrong glue). 3.) Schedule 40 (White PVC) Pipe in the diameter size shown (4") is pressure rated and has a 220 PSI rating. It is thicker walled than DWV, ABS pipe. BUT that Schedule 40 design rating is for water, which doesn't compress - mitigating secondary hazards if there is a catastrophic pressure failure. Be safe out there.

Good to meet Grant. Seems like the perfect person to own and love Copito. (sp) love the details of the shower build. Just seems like not enough water could be in that pipe. So many adventures, so many people. You gave us a great ride, throughout all the trouble with the van and the people you included and visited. Remember Oscar? How is he? I have a simple 5gl blue LOWES bucket I put in the sun and it gets way too hot. I need to add bits of it to a rain water bucket to tolerate it. SO how do you control the temperature? And ya like Jacek Wolny mentioned I had the same concept of mounting the front part to a pivot point and raising the back a foot or 2. The front seemed safer as mainly so going down the road tends to pushes it down instead of lifting it up. the back would be on a bifold duel brace. And of course the spigot would need to be adjusted slightly. But still this is in concept and not made yet.

Probably wouldn't drink or let your skin absorb the endocrine disruptors leaching from abs or pvc when hot. Dohh

Do you have an alternative to suggest? Galvanized steel is heavy and leaches zinc. Alluminum isn't exactly safe for the body either, but I don't know if it leeches. I do agree this certainly isn't drinking water, but what do you do for hot bathing water on the road in the bush? Baths can be flame heated but require a lot more water and not every region has abundant fuelwood.

this a good idea but not for stealthy living in the van, a 2gal bottle weed killer with a pump would work fine

Questions, questions, questions. Do you think this system would work in UK/northern Europe? Remember, it's a bit cooler than Oz, Mexico, etc. AND... World travelling with a van - is it possible and affordable to ship or ferry the van from, say, Pacific Asia to Alaska or Canada, or from southern Asia to Oz?

You could just raise the back end of the pipe when it is in use.

Hi guys love the videos but on the shower part I know PVC pipe well but your accents are very strong and I did not get the part about the pressure relief valve on the shower I Know the pressure valve just like a car or a bike but the pressure relief valve escapes me thanks and safe trips

Was going to do something like this, but I'm worried about chemicals leaching from the PVC into the water once it's hot :/ Did y'all look into anything like that? Not sure what kind of plastic the sewage pipe is made from.

I might be inclined to look for a band clamp that is a bit stronger than the hose clamps used... those things are a bit flimsy.

Hey guys, great video as usual. What happens if your shower is half full and you have to slam on the brakes on the highway? Won't all that water rush to the front and rip the whole thing right off the roof? My physics is rusty but is this an issue you've found?

no, but one time the front end cap came off and all the water came out.

I've just built one of these, and the screw-on filler cap is not sealed and therefore leaks air as soon as I try to pressurize it. I got a cap with a nylon gasket, tightened it with a wrench, and even that didn't withstand anything over 10psi. If anyone knows a) what I'm doing wrong, or b) a workaround for this, I would love to hear it.

Would it be possible to make one with a hand pump sprayer you could incorporate into the build to provide water pressure to force the water out a port with a bent copper tube at the end of the tube?

Why did you choose 4 in pipe instead of 6 or 8 in for more capacity and why did you only make it 4-5 ft long instead of the length of the van (8') since you're mounting it up, out of the way? You could hold so much more water? Is it because of 8+lb/gal is too heavy?
