Great series of videos. I am building a 9' x 13' (yes, odd size) shed. You do not use collar ties or ceiling joists/rafter tie. Are you concerned about the walls bowing without these ties or is your structure size too small? I am hoping to avoid both for my build so I can keep it as open as possible. It does not snow here so no concern of that load. I am doing a 4/12 or 5/12 pitch. Shed walls 7' 7". Would you recommend collar or rafter ties for a 9x13? Or maybe just in the middle? Thanks

Our shed designs 8' and less do not use collar ties or bottom chords. If you have heavy snow loads you may want to add them. Our larger sheds all have them.

It is very important that plywood clips are used between the rafters otherwise the sheathing will sag, and or bow. Even though you have gone to the trouble to make all the rafters the same, it is very common that the tails will vary. Run a string line down down the tails to make sure they are straight, and cut if necessary.

My goal was to build a pitched gable above the RV so I could have a loft inside. I was going to be using 2x6 can anyone give me recommendations on if I'm able to use 2x4 or 2x6 as my rafter since the wall framing is only 2x2. Idk what to do please help

Yes, this is the minimal building code to meet the prescriptive building requirements. 30lb live 10lb dead loads.

The rafters are set 24" from the face of the gable end to the center of the rafters and then 24" o.c. after that. Then the sheeting ends break on the center of a rafter.

Simon Vancoillie That depends on the roof loads in your region, ie. snow and wind. But as a general rule I would use engineered trusses for spans of 14 foot and greater. Check with your local building department or a structural engineer.

c siebester Great queston! The roof can get over 120+ degrees on a daily basis during the summer. With higher heat you get more expansion. The gaps allow for expansion. The floor will expand as it heats up but the tongue and groove does not allow it to buckle.

There is a 2 inch round vent that pops in to a 2" drilled hole. Put one between every rafter.

A shed is more prone to mold and rot when vented, in my experience. Roof venting intakes on a house are much higher above moist ground, pollen and lawn cutting dust and isolated/insulated from the utilized space. They carry retained heat through the night to reduce humidity to some degree. Small screened windows alone in a shed are better, imo. You can manually control as needed. You want inside humidity below ambient. (Let it bake a little at times) I've seen both approaches side by side (Northeast US), and venting a shed is worse. I guess desert or prarrie climates could be different, especially if storing volatile materials.

If you use the same process as Video #5 your trusses will not be 24 OC. Just like before in #5 you messed up (only there you added 3/4" to each stud, here you start out 3/4" short). In the case of this video, you started on your right side and measured from the outside edge of the terminal truss, but your marked which was not the center, its 3/4" short, because you didn't start your measurement from the center of the terminal truss (you started your measurement from the outside edge). You were ok from then on because you measure 24" from that mark for each subsequent truss, but your first one was short 3/4". You have to be consistent and measure outside edge to outside edge, or inside edge to inside edge, or center to center. You can't mix them, like apples and oranges. If tha's too difficult to remember,, just cut yourself a 15 3/4" or 23 3/4" spacer/template stick and put it between each stud/truss.

You obviously do not live in a heavy snow climate. 24" centers on the roof will not hold up under a heavy snow load. I build all of my sheds with 16" centers for the roof. I live in upstate NY and 2' or more of snow on a roof is not uncommon.
