Building a custom shower niche can be a great feature to your home improvement project. A great shower niche can be the highlight of every bathroom renovation project. In this video i will als share with you on how to price the niches for my bathroom remodel jobs.

pro tip: when building the niche, make sure your bottom support (running horizontally) isn't 100% level. You want some slope (coming away from the wall) so water doesn't collect inside the niche

As mentioned already, he talked about this 1:50 Ironically, this is the only video I’ve seen where someone adds the slope during framing. It’s easy to add the slope when doing the tiling. And when using pre built niches from Schluter etc., you’ll need to do it in tile anyway.

No need. You just drywall shim the back when you install your waterproof board on the bottom

As a plumber, I use ALOT of flat rate pricing (Install a garbage disposal under sink is $468 plus materials). So, hearing you talk $$ is AWESOME, even if at my posting date is 10 months later. Learning a new skill - - tiling is my goal.

I cut studs with a skil saw on a guide or track then finish them off with dremel. Get them nice and straight. For bottom horizontal stud i shim back of it to get the right slope I need.

Awesome job! Quick question: I’m installing a niche in an exterior wall. It’s 2x6 wall. I’m only crossing 1 stud and I’m thinking I can notch it back 3 1/2 inches and then put a header above. Do you think that when notching that one stud I need a temp header for the few minutes before my permanent one goes in?

Nope. You will be ok. Houses are stronger than people think. People cut out 3 studs to put windows in all the time. You can can’t leave it out long term bc it will sag

same question as me ! we are doing on the end wall of a tub to shower conversion, It is on the dry end, rainfall and shower head are at the other end, so I'm thinking of schluter membrane directly on the backside of that drywall. will widen my shelf by 1/2 '

I always use screws. Deck screws. I think it’s better. Also it allows me to adjust things as I do. People don’t use them bc it’s expensive

When you discuss the entire project with your customer do you give them a total labor price? I usually discuss the entire remodel and then give them a labor price. If there are any unforeseen work then I do a change order.

We give a total price for everything! But we also work into our contract that any unforeseen things and changer orders will be charged hourly

I always look at how much MY time costs over how much I’m willing to pay a contractor to do a professional job. I think $500 tiled is a reasonable price. Well done.

@@WINNI.Designsi charge $400 so yes $500 for a niche is good price given the extra labor involved and its a highlight piece to most showers. If its a niche on a load bearing wall where a header is needed then theres an upcharge for the liability and extra labor. Great work and love your content!

34" x 16". Or do you mean after the job is complete. Therefore just subtract 1" around the niche unless you tile thicker. He said allow 1/2" underlayment, & 1/2" for tile. That's how I see it.

Yes keep finances and what to charge. Thats the biggest problem I have is pricing. I ended up charging to low. My wife says I'm in the wrong business because I'm to nice. I don't want to overcharge but I'm tired of under charging. You can't ask another contractor in your area . They will either lie to you or just not tell you at all

Even though $500 seems like a fair price where you live, you could never get that much extra on a shower here in rural Ohio. $300 extra would be tops. There are too many unlicensed, non-insured contractors & Amish who work for cash to compete with.

If you want to make your videos better, STOP adding music. Ask yourself this. I’m doing a voice over on this video and I want the viewer to hear everything I have to say without any distraction. Does adding music help the viewer hear me or does it hinder the viewer from hearing me? Give up? It’s annoying. Could you imagine the news having music playing in the background? How about you are sitting in school and as the teacher is instructing you music is playing. That would be really annoying. Lose the music and grow your channel.

He just said it took him an hour to do the frame, which is already the harder and more time consuming portion of the niche. $500 sounds about right because it's only adding an additional hour or two more of work on top of what he showed.
