In today’s video I will be creating a tooled leather knife sheath. The leather that I am using is from Montana Leather. It is the Vaqueta line of dyed Vegtan leather. One of the great things about this leather is that you do not need to dye it. Yet, it works like a traditional vegtan leather. This saves time, mess, and money. Here is a link to the leather and other items used in today’s video.
The leather

The clear finish

I found that the dyed leather cases nicely and tools well. The color is crisp, clear and I think it turned out great. I will show you how to create the tooling pattern and each step of the process. If you did not want to tool leather then you could use the same design to create an easy gift.
Thanks for watching my videos today.

Robert, Thank you for those kind words. Way back when I had my Tandy Leather store ( 1980s ) I learned a lot. It is awesome to see someone like you doing something you enjoy doing and passing it along to others through this You Tube platform. It was and is a pleasure to have meet you and your lovely wife. Keep up the great work and hope to see you again soon.

@@InMyBusyLittleShophello Robert. Milo again with more questions. Thanks for your patience! Do you have a video on best gluing techniques? I’ve been trying to make some simple guitar straps. Nothing serious but keep running into issues when it comes to gluing. I am trying to glue a chrome liner to veg tan. Been using Barge, two coats. Waiting between coats but every time the glue is not sticking along the edges. I’ve weighed down the project, waited overnight just to find that the edges did not stick extremely frustrating! I’m thinking I may need to rough up the backside of the chrome? Is it too hot in my garage for the glue to setup? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks Robert in advance.

@@milom.2057Milo, interesting I have not had that issue as you describe it. Early on I purchased some precut belt straps (veg) that I figured out later had been sealed on the back. The contact adhesive didn’t bond well with that. The one thing that I do find on Crome is it moves when brushing and is hard to get the adhesive all the way to the edge. I think you have watched me place the leather on cardboard with the edge of leather matched up. I then brush off the side, outward, this helped me get a good coat all the way to the edge. The other thing is some of the crome tan really soaks the adhesive in. I let the first coat dry at least 10 minutes regardless of how it feels. I hope this information helps in some way. Oh, I do tap the leather down and then I use a roller not the burnisher on crome because it wants to stretch more. .

@@InMyBusyLittleShop thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I’ve watched your videos which shows you applying glue while having the edge positioned so you get a good coat. I’ve done the same thing as you and then later say out loud, “but Robert does it this way!” I think I found the problem/solution. I took two scraps,one chrome and the other veg tan. I roughed up the chrome with some sand paper, applied glue, waited, and then put them together. Turned out great! No gaps. Now it’s a cool day so I don’t know if that is also a factor. But thanks for your reply and help! Really appreciate it.

Beautiful design and finish and a ton of work! If I am unable to punch through a lot of leather layers, I mark the stitch line and use a fine drill bit on my Dremel, mounted on a mini drill press.

I really appreciate you coming over and subscribing and checking out my channel. Leatherwork certainly is a niche. In some parts of the country it’s more popular. I think partly with the influx of leather products that look quality but are not. Let me know if there is a leather project that you would like to see.

@InMyBusyLittleShop there may be a project for 4 H. It's a holder for the number of participants that show their livestock. I would probably have to send a pic of it. Anyway enjoyed the making of the sheath.

Well that new cutting board isn't a virgin anymore. Great looking sheath and enjoyed you sharing your process. How do you like your circular overhead light? Do you find it minimizes shadows during your build process? LED, I assume? Thanks again!
@InMyBusyLittleShop
@InMyBusyLittleShop 10 күн бұрын
My son purchased that for me. Found it online. It does help to get rid of shadows. It is LED and I think it works well. It is not an expensive model but I have fine it useful. Great question!
