I’m surprised you didn’t fill the cells of the first row of block. I’ve always done this as I believe it adds to stability of the remaining wall block.

If I were building a retaining wall sure I would do it but not for a little sitting wall

Good video! I want to add a seating wall to a patio installation which will be at the end of the slope. How do I pitch the area around the seating wall to ensure there is runoff instead of having water just pool at the bottom of the wall? So in other words, the water will be pitched towards the seating wall at the edge of the patio, but how do I pitch the water away from the wall at that point?

You can do a couple different things here. 1. You can space the bottom row blocks so there’s a gap between each block. Water can run through here 2. Put a strip of nice stone in between pavers and wall. Water runs through stone. OR you can use small chip stone in the pavers joints so the pavers here are permeable. Also make sure you’re using a permeable base/open graded base in these cases so water will drain through

Are these blocks 6” high? I noticed you only buried half of the first course, shouldn’t the first course be fully buried in this application?

These are 3.5” high. For a big retaining wall I’d bury a full block but I’m not too worried about doing that for a 18” sitting wall

You don’t have to build up a “footer” or thick base for the wall? Just that 4” base of chip rock is all you need?

There’s about 7” of 3/4” stone and then another 1” of chip for my base under the wall

I was taught that it was better to build the sitting wall first, and then lay pavers what do you think??
