How to build a Thatched Roof

From being the preferred roofing method across the world and climatic conditions, thatched roofs today seem to have become simply a cosmetic look for resorts and restaurants.
Yet it's appeal continues to call out to most. What can be better than being able to build your roof with dried straw or grass or leaves around. And a roof that keeps your home well insulated from temperature extremes while being waterproof. Plus, a roof that can be maintained and repaired, whenever needed, with the same grasses available in abundance.
Low skilled shoddy work has given thatching a bad name. A well made roof with swamp grass is known to last even 40-50 years. So whether it is right for you or not, enjoy this video of how Geeli Mitti team learns to thatch and what it looks like on some of our builds.

Thanks. I really thought this exists only in English country side. I was so damn ignorant. One question.. will the hay or dried grass survive in heavy tropical monsoon rains..in say Western ghats area

Yes, thatched roofs work well in such areas as well traditionally. Durability will depend on type of grass, roof pitch and quality of thatching.

Namaste. We've tried to share info about thatching on this video. What would you like to know? We design and do our thatching in-house and experiment with different materials to test their performance and longevity. If the snow stays on a thatched roof, it wouldn't last much and can also leak. A slate/shingle roof would be more appropriate.

No, it doesn't when built properly and with the correct slope. That's what has been shown and taught in video. You can also research.

Thank you so very, very much for this video. I'm in Canada, and want to build using ancient techniques, using the time I have in my old age. I also want to teach my 12 year old Grandneice to be self sufficient, in these very trying times. Your video is a great place to start. I was hoping for a more intricate and intensive video, as id like to tie several smaller buildings together. The smaller individual buildings can be easier for one person to tackle. Perhaps in future you would be able to make one? Once again, thank you, im so inspired by your video, and its proving to bring people together in order to help each other.

Howdy. I am here in Canada too, and found this to be an excellent video. I too, would like to build a multi building enterprise for my family and future grandchildren. Somewhere not troubled by code, and so on. Care to chat? I am in Victoria, but only here presently due to my children. I am preparing for a life out there.
