You are right. Live your dreams. Do not live to work. People spend long hours at work to pay for their huge houses and two or three cars and expensive furniture, several computers, etc. etc. But they come home only to sleep. What's the use of such a life? People have made an idol of their huge houses. They give their lives to have them and they do not realize that Jesus would not agree with them. Modesty is the key word. If we all were modest, we would live in much smaller houses or apartments, because we do not really need huge houses. A nice cozy house is more than enough. And it is easier to pay for. And it gives us more quality time spent with our family and friends.

An idea: get a cheap small pop tent. The kind you toss into the air and it conforms as a ready made tent. Stow your outside gear in it. Anything that can't fit in or on top of the car once your in camping mode. This way you avoid the slime and grime on your stuff. You can also kneel inside and wash dishes, etc., and the tent has such a small footprint for storage in your car. Your things will keep it solid on the ground. The dog can slip inside and get out of the sun or rain while you are working outside. Just figure what size you need and you now have a porch or storage shed.

Brett, for extra income you might want to look into going where the big bike rides are, like RAGBRAI in Iowa, North Carolina's Mountains to Sea, Missouri's Big BAM, etc. Being set up to give massages, pick up extra income from cyclists with sore backs somewhere along any multi-day ride. They charge around $20-30 for a half hour.

Hi Brett, these are T and F from north NJ. We live very close to NYC and live is very busy as well. I am auto mechanic and unemployed at the moment. However if you need any tips or diagnostics for any problem with your car, please let me know and I'll do whatever I can to help you get back on your horse. We are sad to see you being tested this way but I see you also have a strong mind and overcoming attitude. I ask all your subscribers to move efforts to give a hand collectively as much anyone is able to give. What is the mileage on the car? Have you done any problems so far?

What about a small pop up tent to house your outdoor gear? It stores in a small footprint and is light to haul. It offers protection for your stuff or a place to change clothes and get out of the elements. There would be so many uses for one.

This was interesting! I was amazed at all the stuff you have with you! The massage table blew me away. You mentioned Asheville. Are you in the mountains of NC?! I love it there! I've been to Montreat Retreat Center for a church recreation workshop 5 or 6 times. I always hate to leave. A question: When you wash the dishes, how do you sanitize them after using the river water? I would use a dish pan to wash the dishes in and boil the water before washing the dishes with it. That's what I'd do and a couple of dish pans wouldn't take up much space because they could fit inside each other and you could store stuff in them when not in use for washing dishes.

I don't know where to begin but the gist of what I want to say is you WILL go far (and not just the miles) with this positive attitude you exude. I actually find myself wishing I was in your shoes although I think you'd do better than me in the long run. I have an idea that you might want to try regarding your UV water sterilizing method. First off, from what I've read, I agree that your 5 mins seems like a necessary overkill. However, wouldn't it be more efficient if you wrapped your water container and UV light together in aluminum foil or something? I guess the light reflecting all around within the enclosure ensure a wider UV coverage (you know, the closer the water is to the light, the more effective sterilization is). Incidentally, another advantage is that you may be able to cut down on sterilizing time to, say, a couple or more minutes. This would save your generator gas and wear. Just a thought.

FoReal Bruddah. You like electricity? Even just a little? To charge your phone? Solar on a car is not hard to do and can be sized to the car you drive. You have a lot of room for a 20 watt panel on the hood of your car, a charge controller takes up room hardly worth speaking of and a battery for a system like that does not have to be very big. I started out with a 20 watt panel to charge an old car battery, that small start has grown to 120 watts and 3 batteries. Soon I will be building a system to go on my Subaru Forester to power an Emergency Communications Station (short wave). I will be able to live out of this car for extended periods of time. So no, I don't jest. You can do it too.
