If you can find the rear drive axle out of a small rear wheel drive car, or 4 wheel bike you can use the differential and the built-in braking system (hand brake cables) to move your vehicle. Best thing is it won't use belts that slip. You can weld a gear on where the drive shaft would normally yoke up to it and voila your wet proof system. I was planning on using the transmission out of a sit-on lawnmower as it has all the same advantages.

another way to make track pads is with hockey pucks, all the traction of rubber wheels on pavement and silencing your tracks and they are much cheaper to purchase and wear better than tire retreads and can be cut to your desired tread pattern

Great project. Love your track design. I hope you don't mind my making a suggestion on the drive system. Use a hydro-static drive out of a lawn mower. The outputs are low speed and I think they would work well. The zero turning radius type might be best. Then you would have the forward and reverse and speed reduction all in one unit. See if you can get a local recapping company to work with you. You might be able to encapsulate your track in rubber giving you more traction and quieter ride, or just buy some tread from them and bolt onto the faces of your steel treads. Best of luck.

yes my friend if you put the ideler pully on top pushing down you would get better traction on the belt, because the belt will cover more of the pully and increase the preasure on the pullies!

great build.. looks like fun! interesting design for a relatively lightweight steel track. I wonder if you could modify one of your plate segments to clip together for drive on/off installation/removal.. would be cool to get a studded rubber track made for snow (if you have any in your area) and then back to steel for mud. I just watched a video of a guy making smaller rubber tracks out of re-purposed tires... maybe a worn out tractor tire in this application. keep up the good work!

Could you have used something like 2 clutches and chains for the transmission instead of belts and tension? That could have covered steering as well.

+prancstaman I am going to try a single line of wheels so 4 on each side of the vehicle. I still wish I could use bigger pulleys. The good thing is now that I moved the engine forward I have plenty of room to change them out later If I need to. How is your project going?

Just got done uploading the vids for the drive sprockets, which means there done. The vids are still private though, I'll send them out once I finish the forum updates I'm on first because they go hand and hand. Maybe tonight or tomorrow they'll be out. Got chores to do first tonight,LOL. Then I'll be starting on my drive section, I got the bearings and axle in to do it finally. The brakes are going to be interesting because I'm making the, I guess you can call them calipers. I plan on, later down the line, to develop the design into a clutch system also. Should be interesting on what I come up with. I usually don't till I make it. Funny thing is people know just as much as me before I start something. My plans usually don't come to me until I do it,LOL.

honestly I think you just need to get a ATV open differential so you can steer with independent brakes, so you don't have to worry about your belts wearing out

+Joey Heider Your right that would be a better way to go. Also thought about a golf cart rear diff. Its difficult to find those things where I live. Most of the projects I build I try to do it in a way that people not just from the States would be able to find the parts and build. Like typical things you can find at the local hardware store.

OK my friend I watched your rig slip when it went into water! ......was the slipage on the engine side o the track side? ...... I don't know how to fix the engine side, but if the track was doing the slipping I can see why by looking at your build! ......the wheel you have at the dive end must be made into a sprocket! with matching area's were the sprocket will go threw the track! ......(look at most tanks and you will see the drive sprocket and how it works)

Aceman307 Well, you could make a small video where you bunch the details up in a quick summary, so people know it's still going on ? :) It doesn't have to be a million hours long, nor be a super fancy production to be somewhat interesting. Plus, if you are hanging up on something, maybe someone have an idea on how to proceed. That said, yeah, I think we all know the feeling of having a project get sidetracked because of real life.
