How to build your own vacuum bag press for veneering, bent lamination or other glue ups. I used boat canopy window vinyl for bag material, and some brass fittings along with some rubber mat for the sealing gasket The bag lock is made up of some pvc electrical conduit. Have fun building your own.

Another way of cutting holes in the rubber mat cleanly is using a sharpened metal pipe. Either way is fine really, but if you need circles instead of holes and have the right size pipe, then it's a useful thing to know. I hadn't really even thought about a vacuum bag being homemade. Really cool.

Try using one of those space saver bags.. The ones you use to store cloths in using your vacuum cleaning... Still use your homemade valve to remove the air. Should be a thinner bag. Easier to move the excess bag around and prevent bridging over the object inside the bag.. Great video as usual......

I work with this vinyl on a daily basis building custom boat canopies. If you use a plastic welder (harbor freight) you can actually weld this vinyl together permanently with some practice and will guarantee a true seal. I use 30guage glass because it is very rigid and resilient. Just a thought.

Fantastic video, am loving the "Wood Workshop", it looks as tidy as a kitchen! I can tell a lot of thought has gone into how to pack as much into that space as possible, will definitely learn from that. One question: Any ideas what hose connector(s) I'd need to adapt this for camping use? It would need to be a much lower profile connector (kind of like a tank connector fitting) but be able to use a bike/hand pump to deflate somehow. You get huge negative pressures and I'm just wondering if that could be done "In the field" so to speak. Cheers again, I've subscribed! 👍

Thaks for the kind feedback, and for subbing. I now some people have used angled car wheel rim valves, but you need to find a way to secure it to the bag. i know some brands have a threaded stem. But as you are not in need of a heavy duty bag for extreme use (my guess) there are multiple bags w/pump on ebay, meant for stuffing away pillows, cluthers and other fabric like stuff

this may or may not be of use (I haven't made one yet, but just got the material): extra heavy duty clear PVC shower liner might be more readily available and/or economical for some - assuming it works that is. I'll let you know whether it does when I make the bag.
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input Gordon. you are correct, it is more readily available, and another advantage is that it is more flexible, to give better pressure to tight curves. I have made a bag of the same material, it worked great, but mine might have been not heavy duty enough as it punctured a couple of places. It can easily be fixed with a patch, but if you are careful and not have any sharp corners, I guess it should be no problem. Let me know how it works out, and good luck on your bag build

Very good video of making the vacuum bag! I may need to make one and your video will guide me. Q1- Could you link us to the “make a vacuum pump from a refrigerator compressor” video you made? Q2 - Doesn’t the vacuum bag method of gluing prevent the glue from drying correctly? I’m only asking because I know temperature affects drying properly and was thinking that lack of enough air or O2 might affect the glue adhesion properties?
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you SIr. I did not make a dedicated video , just showed it in my video on assembly table accessories part 3. But it is pretty much just a case of taking any refrigerant compressor and cut the 2 pipes to the coil. One of them will suck, and the other will blow. Some suggest adding a few drops of oil into the inlet once in a while, but I have never found it necessary. I do not know very much on glue physics, but the glue dries for me, and I use regular woodworking glue. Thanks for watching

Hi! I've been reading the comments for the past 15 minutes looking for the explanation of why the bag stays in negative pressure when you disconnect the pump. When you replied in a comment " The bag stays connected to the running vacuum pump during the hole GLUEUP " - the " GLUEUP " means that both sides of the bag touches so there's no more air that could get through ? I'm not familiar with vaccuum sealing yet, I just got into the field to create reusable bags to hold large foldable items during camping (car cover, sleeping bag, etc...). So If my understanding is correct, that wouldn't work for my requirements, I'd need a one-way valve ? Thanks in advance for your time, it was a great video that really inspired me !

I am not sure what this is called in english. I purchased in the marine dept of a hardware store. It is meant to be put in the side of the boat to connect to cooling water or similar. this is the smallest one, I could find and it has 1/4" pipe threads.

Why not just heat weld the vinyl sheet? Seems like that would be easier, quicker and probably stronger than the glue.
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 6 жыл бұрын
I was not aware of this option. Is it easy to do?
@brettski74
@brettski74 6 жыл бұрын
I've only done polyethylene sheet, which is lighter, but there are plenty of youtube videos on welding vinyl sheet like this, too. For Polyethylene, I've typically used an iron and some heavy paper and it's reasonably easy, but you need to be careful not to overdo the heat. Looking at other people online, using a heat gun seems more common with heavier sheet material like the vinyl you're using. I'd suggest doing a search for heat welding clear vinyl sheet and try it out on some scraps if you're planning to do more.

It should work great for fibreglassing as well. Just make sure you tr to protect the bag from the resin getting all over it. It depends on the material you use, but i could get stuck. Use some wax paper for protection
