Andrew, here is a quick tip from a painter and woodworker. When gluing two "slippery" surfaces together add salt or sugar to the glue once it is spread onto the surface. The sugar grains will act as sandpaper and prevent the surfaces from drifting all over the place. Then use the masking tape as you show in your video. The process will be easier this way.
@AndrewTischlerArt7 жыл бұрын
Great tip! Cheers!
@chrisgriffith15734 жыл бұрын
I'm a painter and wood worker too. Never found that that works well until you have squeezed out the glue well enough for the salt to contact both top and bottom surfaces, and you have to guide the two pieces together. By the time they are that close, you are bonding the surfaces with friction anyway, making that tip useless. Best to predrill pilot holes and line up screws or finish nails then tighten it all down so nothing goes astray. Faster, more accurate. But for things like Andrew showed, holding them in place with tape is the best, simplest, fastest way possible.

@@chrisgriffith1573 Great followup to this tip, however not everyone will want to use a drill or fasteners for alignment.
@chrisgriffith15733 жыл бұрын
@@robvegart Either way, salt another step, which won't help until it will, and if you have to get the within a grain of salt close... it's faster to learn how to spread glue properly to begin with?

I realize this is an old post, but the hanging cleat easel technique is ingenious Andrew! By trade, I was a journeyman carpenter and cabinet maker for decades. We would use these very cleats to hang fabric panels and paneling on the walls of elevator lobbies, office spaces etc. They would be necessary because you never have any exposed fasteners. Never once in my retirement, while taking up painting did it ever occur to me to use wooden cleats to build a simple yet incredible cleat system for an easel for my studio? Thank you so much for rattling my quickly aging brain! Love your channel!

This easel design has been on my mind for a while Andrew. An artist that I follow in Denver CO has a similar build in his studio space. For the longest, I've been painting in my garage. This year I've decided to finish out the side of the garage that I use with dry wall and a neutral paint, then adding that type of easel on the wall. Thanks for the effort put into every video. Its hard work, I know. Some of your audience will never understand the redundancy in some tutorials and tips, however, your videos aren't created in vane. Sometimes, the most simple tip can benefit some of the most successful, or beginning, artists.

This is genius seriously. It takes virtually no space, gives you the ability to hang multiple paintings and also move them around. Also the fraction of the cost of a studio easel. I would say this is better than an easel for the reasons I stated above.

Andrew Tischler did you end up doing this video? I'd love to see it. I want to build this easel, it seems amazing. But I can't drill the wood into my wall. Any tips on how to make it a free standing one? Like a base that's heavy enough to hold it upright and straight the way the wall would. This would change my life. Especially my art lessons, because I could make one to hang up my students work, in progress ones lower and finished along the top. Would look really cool! Thanks for the video. Hope to see your other video if you did it =)

Hey Andrew! This is a really great idea!! I'm thinking of doing the same or something very similar... I'm thinking of not using the vertical tracks and just fixing the cleat rails hard to the wall. Do you think this would still work as well? I don't have any plugs or outlets on my wall and will space them close apart so they act as spacers for the bottom of the canvas... Thanks for the amazing videos! You have also been a major inspiration in my moving to oil paints from acrylics... haha

I saw this type of easel on a Cesar Santos video, i liked the concept and went looking for a "how to" vid and this is how I discovered your site and your amazing ArtWork. So I built it the other week, just adding another cross bar tonight. I was telling other artists at a group exhibition here in Donegal last week, about this type of easel and of course about your site. For me I just got so fed up of an open space being cluttered, with easels, drawing tables etc in centre of the studio, having to constantly walking around them or moving them when I had to....so this was a simple, straight forward and a concise video, cheers for the DIY :¬)
@chriswhitehouse89824 жыл бұрын
I believe it you look closely, Cesar just has carpet on his walls and uses push pins to attach his unstreched canvas to the wall. Serves the same purpose, but a little different then Andrew's French cleat system.

Quick question, given that the canvas is hanging by one cleat at the top (and the bottom part of the canvas is not supported), does it move around a bit at the bottom? Or is the bottom part of the canvas supported by the crossbars on the wall?

Hello Andrew I love your quick tip wall easel. I finally got my 10 ft x16 ft she-shed art studio for Christmas from my husband. What would you suggest as a wall mount for 8 ft x 4 ft paintings. I create 3D printed jazz paintings and recently started large scale paintings by request. I want to use the largest wall as an easel but be able to also use it for smaller scale paintings. I currently created a large scale easel out of PVC pipe if I decide to paint out doors. Since my space isn't as big I think the wall easel will work best for my space. I have a current shed that was one a barn for yard equipment I plan to use as storage for paints, craft supplies etc.

Thank you for that video andrew. I have got a small studio and was thinking i don't want a big bulky easel in there plus i think they are over priced. Could you do a video on studio lighting? I'm still looking for a decent way to get proper studio lighting, without breaking the bank haha. I do have a fairly cheap daylight lamp, but that's more a table light so it's a bit difficult to setup for painting. (It's light does give me a neutral situation for colours though compared to other lighting in my studio that's way too warm.)

Question: Would this be stronger than if I just take a 1x4 (or 1x6) and cut a 45 degree angle on its edge with my table saw?
@kirkwilliams69386 жыл бұрын
Very nice but for mine I may make it at a slight angle from the bottom. Do you find it difficult to paint when the panel is perfectly straight? Even my Mac and my desk top easel I like at a slight angle.. Awesome vids my friends. Just loving your information.

Ive been considering a lot of different ways to make a wall easel, keep coming back to this one.. but I am wondering how the screw on the canvas affect the canvas itself? I buy them rather than stretching them myself and there is no bare wood, so I have to screw through the fabric. Will it not lead to tearing over time? Or do you do anything afterwards with the hole? Thanks so much for all your videos!!

Just cut a bevel and cut out the glueing another strip on. This is the French cleat system and I'm about to convert my studio wall this way but with a shelf at the top to store paints etc, in order to free up floor space

thanks for posting. I use masonite, not canvas, so not sure this would work for me. I can't drill that piece to the back. lol. Oh well. I guess I will get a good easel. Andrew, I am considering making this sort of slat wall configuration to include hanging the art including framed with glass. I'll try longer pieces and put picture hooks in it to have a two point hanging on the wire. I'm not sure how heavy a piece I can use, but the math, yes the math would lead one to believe the load could be quite heavy. I'm redesigning my studio and will no longer have to nail into my drywall. It's a simple way to hang works in process and completed. I take it you don't get flapping while painting. How would you use this on a panel of about 1/4" thick? Perhaps Velcro?
@AndrewTischlerArt6 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, velcro may be an option. Sometimes an extra bar installed a bit lower can stop some of the movement.
@barnBR5-497 жыл бұрын
This hanging technique is called a french cleat. Andrew has provided a great way for non-woodworkers to make them. You can Google "french cleat" for other ways to make them or buy them.
