I used this vid to build a workbench. The only thing I changed was the dimensions and the bench surface. I made my bench 6 feet long and 32” wide, and used 3/4” sanded plywood for the top. I’m applying polyurethane to the sanded plywood. I’m on coat #6 now and it’s building up to a wonderfully smooth, wipeable surface. Otherwise, I built it exactly to this plan. I’m very happy with how it turned out. If you follow this method and use these materials you’re building a bench that will outlast this century, and someone, 100 years from now, will cherish the workbench YOU built. Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder, using his notch method, DONT WEAR GLOVES AROUND POWER TOOLS! Lol! First, I want to say this is an AWESOME build and one I was excited to start! I went out, got the supplies, unloaded the wood, and got right to work. I unfortunately forgot one very important thing, which was to take off my gloves! The first board I cut into on my table saw rolled forward, flung itself behind me, rolled my gripper, and the saw blade grabbed my glove and almost amputated my pinky and ring finger. I ended up with about 20 to 30 stitches. That being said, it took me about a month longer to build the work bench, but it still came out awesome! Now that I am done, I am going to make a sign for my ripped up glove. Any ideas? I was thinking something along the lines of "no gloves, no nubs." Im open to better suggestions. Lol A huge thank you to the gentleman who took the time to make this video!

Finished my new work bench adopting this great design. I made this a little longer and bought 4x4 at 10ft, this was enough to include for 6 cross bracing supports. as a fellow gentleman who needed a new bench, I built this with a miter saw, table saw, and optionally used my band saw. I could have done without it, but it saved me time cutting the notches with the table saw. A LITTLE ADDITION: I added a 2x4 upright along the back of the bench as a wall to prevent losing things behind the bench.

Very cool. Only change/upgrade I can think of is adding some pegs or something to mount a sacrificial sheet of plywood to the top. That way you can stain/paint/whatever on top without worrying about those 1x8s.

I built this in about 5 hours (and I am extremely meticulous and slow). I bought all the materials at Home Depot for $180. I also made a wood purchase mistake though. Instead of 2x8's for the top, I accidentally bought 2x6's. This was rectified by buying an additional 2x8 and so on the top I have 4 2x6's and 1 2x8 (on the front edge). This gets about 3 3/4 inches overlap on the front edge with a perfectly even backside! Perfect! Thanks for this video!

The original comment says 1x8s for the top but I think it should be 2x8 but there are a lot of cross pieces so if one wanted to top it with 1x8 I suppose one could but most people want a heavy duty work bench with a 2x top if using dimensional lumber. The lower shelf which I wasn't referring to can be thinner, like 1x or 3/4" and the cleats the shelf boards rest on can be 1x1 or 2x2, either way, if you have the right screws or nails...

I’m very new to carpentry but decided to take a crack at this as I needed a workbench in my garage. I gotta say, it came out great. It’s super sturdy and feels like it could support the weight of my truck! Took me maybe 12 hours total and if I were to do it again I could probably do it in 6. In total I spent around $200 in wood and screws/bolts. One tip l’d give is if you’re using cheap construction lumber, take the time to pick the best pieces possible from the pile. It’ll make your life a lot easier…

I like the idea of using lag bolts to hold the frame together and leave the bottom shelf boards free floating, means if I need to move the bench (as in a new home) I can just disassemble the whole thing into the two frames, and I would only have to unscrew the top boards, unless you went an extra step to flush fit them on top like you did the bottom boards. Would make moving it a smaller more compact job in a trailer.

Great for novices to create an incredibly useful bench - only a couple of missing points: use cinch straps to hold the cross pieces while tacking them in; need to take the safety guards off the table saw to make the notches in the 4X4s (and I notched the lower shelf planks as well); using construction lumber makes a much less attractive but just as sturdy bench. two favorite aspects: the sturdiness, the fact that it comes completely apart so you can move it anywhere (my current house is on a ledge with about a million stairs to get up to the house, anything coming in or out has to be dissassembly-able!)

I did something similar this xmas, but used 2x4 cause I had loads of them left over from a sauna build. The pros is that you do not need to notch anything out which table or circular saw, cons are that you do not get the uniformity with 4x4 legs. However, I think this is a great video that really shows how to build a bench. Easy steps and all.

Great workbench and video. Not sure if anyone mention this, but the cut you made at 3:10 is seems unsafe. Having the piece between the blade and the fence as you are pushing past the blade seems it would be a big candidate for kickback. Sorry if I am out of place as I am only into this woodworking about a year and half and still learning. Keep up the great projects.

You are correct, that's an unsafe practice. Do not use the miter gauge and rip fence in the same operation. If you want clean and accurate cross-cuts, a simple crosscut sled solves the problem.

I'm pretty sure those are 2x2 and not 1x1. Also, deck boards are 5/4 (1-1/4") thick, not 3/4", so for the bottom shelf you would need 1x6 instead, which are 3/4" x 5.5" as you stated in this video. The only difference is the long edges are square vs deck boards which are chamfered. This was a great video and I'm making mine this weekend, just clarifying in case it helps anyone out. Deck boards are stronger and treated, but are 1/2" thicker than 1x6 so choose one or the other and measure correctly!

Just built this today. Still have to mount the 2x8 top. All in all I am happy. Used Home Depot wood so there are some minor issues but this is a solid work bench

I might add that for those without a table saw, a skilsaw can accomplish those dado cuts. That bit of joinery, if done right, is what adds to the rigidity and strength of your bench. Built it last week. Notching it out was a pain in the ass! Plus for some reason lowes had 4in lag screws where the 5in ones should have been. So i screwed 4 in already before realizing. Stupid of me to trust lowes labels. Thanks for the design. Bench is sturdy!

Made one very similar to this, slapped it together with 5 inch lag bolts and it feels invincible. Would recommend

Got mine built, it is incredibly sturdy and heavy. I also didn't have the right bit for the lag bolts so I had to use a socket set. That turned the 3hr project into 5-6. Otherwise I am very happy with it. Thank you.

Looks good. I have to make a new one and your plan looks easy. My old one has a sheet of hard board on top, then I made a thin frame around the outside to keep it from sliding. Now the top is smooth and flat.

I just built your model over about 3 days and love it! I neglected to put the deck board stringers on before I assembled it (got excited and ahead of myself), so had to make my 68-yr old knees suffer while I crawled around awkwardly getting them fitted. I expect that I will add drawers to hold some stuff, but that's for later. Thanks for the great project!
