Thanks mate! I've pinned your comment because that's pretty handy :) Btw, if you want you can have a metal door on the adobe door frame too, it doesn't affect the insulation.

One question: can we do this in reverse too? I think kind of a "sleeper build" where other people only see the adobe but it is actually metal so it kind of goes under the radar. Would a build like that still have the same benefits?

I've made several bases on Scorched using a similar design. But now I'm up against something new: I've never built on a larger area of uneven ground... which requires a significant number of pillars and ceilings to cover. How does one create a two layer design similar to this when you have to use a combination of foundations... and ceilings with pillars ?? Extend metal ceilings off of the metal foundations and adobe ceilings off of... in the case of your video, the existing adobe ceilings? I'm guessing you'd have to put down the upper adobe ceiling, then the pillar, and THEN the metal ceiling... otherwise the pillar would probably snap to the metal one only?? (But then, double ceilings underneath probably doesn't provide very much extra protection, I suppose.)
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 7 жыл бұрын
For a start, I would suggest using the method in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6fFqaOoe7iJfbc to make your metal ceilings flush with your metal foundations. You will have to do the metal ceilings first, if you try doing it the other way round, the lower (metal) ones will be obstructed by the upper (adobe) ones. Once you have the metal ceilings in place on pillars you can snap the adobe ceilings from the ones laid on top of the foundations. If you want more protection underneath, you can add another layer of metal ceilings - just lower the foundation another step and you have another snap point height to work with. Hope that makes sense, if not, feel free to ask more questions :)

question, you used thatch materials at the beginning, why did you use wood later? And i used the higher wooden ceiling snap and i still cant get in without crouching
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 4 жыл бұрын
Thatch foundations and wooden ladders are just using the cheapest materials. Not sure why you are still having to crouch, must be a wrong snap point going on somewhere.

tried it out. first off, damn fine video. no fluff, quick, concise, easy to follow. the only thing i messed up, was i snapped the adobe walls closer to the metal walls i think than you did (looks like i managed to snap them right up against the metal, where your build used the inner point, leaving a very small gap between the metal and adobe walls. anyways, rock elemetal, no damage. giga, intermittent damage. most bites hit nothing, a few caught the adobe on the floor, and the first row of adobe walls. no damage on ceilings or upper row of walls. also boosted the giga to 10k melee, same results, just a lot more damage :)
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you ;) I think the reason why I did a gap between the adobe and metal walls was that otherwise some bits of adobe were sticking through the metal. Thanks for letting me know about the elemental and giga, I was going to test it but completely forgot.

I did this method on a much larger scale but im using a metal behemoth gate for dinos to get in and out. Do you know if Im losing insulation with the metal gate? Do I need to stack an adobe behemoth inside and close the gaps with adobe walls?

@captainfatdog 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure to be honest. It's something I've been wondering myself for a while but haven't got round to trying it yet. I might get time to give it a go later, if I do I'll let you know.
@Miller22222
@Miller22222 7 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking its more based on proximity, so if you have a huge open building, one large enough to need a behemoth gate, you wont get the entire buff from the adobe insulation. Still negates the effect of the metal tho. But leme know what you find if you do test it. Thanks.

All is awesome, except the Adobe doorframe doesn’t align!! It is just stands out, and when you want to build above that, it just replaces the metal wall behind. Anybody has any idea what to do ? Thank you

This is cool, but obsolete. You can use the Fatdog wall layering method to put adobe inside metal and get the same result. It's easier, faster, and looks cleaner. The one thing it doesn't do is allow for the ceilings to nest the way they do here, but you can get around that in other ways. I usually just make the base 2 tall, insulate the bottom half and not the top. You can but things like troughs and fert bins in the top, or incubate wyvern eggs up there.
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 4 жыл бұрын
I can't remember why I did it this way but I'm pretty sure I had a good reason. I knew my walls stacking trick before I made this.
@timweiner7990
@timweiner7990 4 жыл бұрын
@@captainfatdog I think the reason was probably so that you can have an inner ceiling and an outer ceiling without addign a whole floor? Thats my guess, anyway. Honestly didn't expect a reply! I love your content, dude, and I recommend your channel to all my building friends! Please don't misconstrue this as my being critical; i just was trying to point people towards the other (in my opion better) wall method which you posted later.
@shawndej8229
@shawndej8229 7 жыл бұрын
This update was critical because I was following your other video minute by minute these past few days and I hit a stopping point. I could not snap the thatch wall to the lower ceiling without breaking out two ceiling tiles and exposing the metal. That should've been clue #1 for me,. After going up 3 high with thatch, BBC that's how high my walls are, the ceiling tiles would not snap to any lower points on the outer wall, clue #2. So this made it impossible to for me to cover the ceiling in metal because the adobe would only snap to the highest snap point. So what I' am working on now is putting the metal ceiling on the 3rd wall and on the inside placing the adobe on 2nd wall high. Not my favorite idea but mining metal and CP is not as fun as actually building. I also had to begin my structure on pillars due to the slope and size of my bunker. Any help you can give would be great. This is also pre- foundation being left new ceiling snap point.
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 7 жыл бұрын
So can you not get the correct height by doing what you said - breaking out 2 adobe ceilings to expose the metal?
@shawndej8229
@shawndej8229 7 жыл бұрын
No, it won't allow me to place the adobe ceiling against the adobe wall. If I place the thatch wall on top of the adobe floor I can snap the ceiling to the top of the wall where the metal goes. I wonder if building on pillars caused this? There is a gap between my metal floor and adobe floor.
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 7 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I think I get what's going on now. I'm guessing it's due to the gap between them being too big. Ceilings can only be placed a certain distance down from the top of the wall before it becomes obstructed. You need to somehow get a slightly higher snap point (so the gap between the roof ceilings is smaller). It's hard to say how you can do it without trying it but I would start by trying this: Step 1: Snap a thatch foundation on the outside of the building, beside one of the pillars. Step 2: Snap another thatch foundation beside the first, going further away from the building Step 3: Place a pillar in the middle of the second thatch foundation Step 4: Place a thatch ceiling on top of the pillar Step 5: Build thatch walls up from the thatch ceiling until you reach the height of the building That in theory should give you the correct height for your adobe ceilings! Let me know if you need any of that re-explaining, it can be a little tricky to describe!

Dude, you have saved me and my tribe's butts with this! This is so awesome. I ran into a snag though. I built this 4 walls high so we could have a second story, but I couldn't get all the fence foundations to snap right on the first ceiling. Some did, some didn't even give me the option to snap to the right point. I already set the walls up (4 high) and had to back track a bit by destroying a couple walls at a time, but this didn't seem to work. I'm perfectly fine with the adobe showing through, but I was wondering if you might have any advice?
@captainfatdog
@captainfatdog 5 жыл бұрын
That's good to hear. It's probably because fence foundations will jump up to the ceiling above (if it's 2 walls higher or less). If you're not bothered about the appearance though you don't really need them.

What about this, using the same techniques as he did in the video, but use wood on the outside and metal on the interior. Could be useful for PVP. Large tribes won't attack u because they think it's made out of wood, but smaller tribes can't because of the metal.

It happens sometimes, that's just ark for ya! Every situation is different but for best practices wait about 5 seconds before placing it. If its going to go on the wrong snap point, the green highlight will normally flicker within the first 5 seconds. If it still fails, try placing from a different position.

Thank you

The reason why you need it on scorched is that you will literally cook to death otherwise. I'm not sure how much it would effect breeding, I'm guessing it would help with some types of eggs but not all. You wont need it on any other maps, only scorched earth. Thatch is the second best insulated but obviously thats really weak.
