How To Build and Install the BEST Yard Drain, French Drain, 2 Great Systems Combined

Күн бұрын

French Drain is perforated pipe surrounded with an aggregate. The drain collects SUBSURFACE WATER. It helps dry out low spots in your yard. A CATCH BASIN collects Immediate Surface Water. As it rains harder and harder, water will begin to pool up in your low spot. The Catch Basins allows that water to drain directly into your system.
You need both for Proper Yard Drainage
French Drain is a great way to help remover water from areas around the yard , the foundation and crawl space. Here is a great project for the DIY. Use a Sump Pump for even better discharge of the water.
You can do this!

Hello-Chicago residential guy here, standing water backyard after heavy rain. There is a drain/catch basin on the lot line but it only catches surface run-off of neighbor and I. Yes, slight pitch in both yards. Can’t tie-in a french cause the basin is a solid concrete cylinder. Would this work: I shallow trench from the center of standing water (20’ x 15’ area) to the basin, but only lay gravel wrapped in fabric, no corrugated pipe. Replace sod. Your opinion? Thanks.

I really can't understand why the gravel base is necessary? Don't you want the pipe on the very bottom of the trench, the gravel base just means that the water needs to build up before it gets into the pipe. 🤔
@dawnv3436
@dawnv3436 4 жыл бұрын
It's more that the bottom aggregate allows more breathable surface area where being all the way down allows more chances to plug up the bottom holes. So it allows more bottom drainage.

Seems like common sense doesn't it? There's a lot in his videos I shake my head at. He talks a lot of times about how "clean" the rock is and it's obviously entrenched with soil/sand/whatever he put it in. My thoughts... if you are trying to provide a space for water to drain freely (the rock forms void space for the water to flow through) and you then allow the original soil to penetrate back into that rock (which it will do if not stopped), then what good did you do in the end? Many times he says to put cloth on top to prevent soil from coming in... as if the soil can't move sideways?

If I replace clay soil to about 60/80cm deep with top soil, would I be able to rely on a French drain without a catch basin ? I don’t know anything about catch basins or how to instal them but I plan to use a French drain however My issue is that water sits on top for a long time too. Would this still happen if it was top soil ?
@JesusJesus-gx6ex

NEVER put gravel UNDER the perforated pipe. It MUST sit directly on top of the fabric in the bottom of the ditch. Any space between pipe and bottom of ditch allows a lot of water to find its way to your basement.

I'm a little stumped by figuring out the correct pitch on the trench. Did you mention that and I missed it somehow? My trench has to get over a shallow but long hump or hill, so the trench will need to be a bit deeper in the middle part of the run, and shallower at both ends. How do you get the right pitch on the bottom of the trench?

How are the results for grass growth over the drain tile? Especially where you are in Sandy soil. I’m waaaaaay up north and we have (and needs to be changed) a section of big o layer years ago, but July on after the water table drops you can see the path of the drain to the ditch because it “browns” much earlier than the rest of the lawn that can get to the lower table. Thanks. Really enjoying your videos, good tips, and you are pretty thorough. Much appreciated. Hope you are all well and safe.

I have miles of 4" perforated plastic pipe with no sock (fabric cover) in my farm fields, some now 35 years old. I have dug some up for repair work from tree roots and the tile is still in great shape. My subsoil is clay and the drains are usually very clean. Some have a bit of clay on the bottom if they are slow running. You can install pipe without fabric but roots are your biggest problem.
