I’ve been watching lots of your videos recently and they’re very helpful! I’m an ex-jumper, now reiner, and I have a qh x tb who’s just turned four. She most certainly has the body type of a jumper, and I really want to try her out in jumping a bit! I have a couple questions, how far along do you recommend the horse to be in their jumping before I begin with grids? And would you say it is a good idea to free jump her to gauge what her abilities are before I start jumping with me on her back? Thanks😊

Ziggy SJ Hi Ziggy, great questions. I think free jumping is great to teach them how to get their legs organised without the pressure of a rider but I’ve had horses that looked amazing free jumping and weren’t great when a rider was on them so I don’t get too excited or disappointed until I’ve started schooling them. I’d start trotting the vertical ( I have a video on this). Then I’d add another jump two strides after ( leave the rail on the ground till he hands over vertical and easily canters the rail) . Keep it very simple first to keep him relaxed . Then judging on his technique, confidence, mind I’d start more grids. Have you thought about joining my mentoring program ( become a Patron) you can send me videos of him working and I send back advice, schooling tips etc . My website has all my videos categorised into Dressage, jumping and horsemanship . Www.kirstinkellyequestrian.com Www.patreon.com/kirstinkellyequestrian

Kirstin Kelly Equestrian thanks so much for the response! I’ll definitely be considering becoming a patron! I watched the trotting the vertical video and I’ll be sure to do that exercise once I start training:)

I know this is nothing to do with the video, but do you have any tips for getting your horse more balanced over the jump and have a more even stride? Also jumping on time not really early (my horse isn’t a natural at jumping but I’m working towards it 😂) I don’t know if you know what I mean, but your the best person to get an answer from 😊 xx

Hi Emma, sorry for the delay, Normally I get notifications when I get questions but missed this. If you have a look at my playlists I have some great videos to help. The improving your horses jump with the circle exercise would be perfect and improving your eye for a distance would help you. Keep an eye open as I have another one releasing shortly on your eye.

Kaitlyn C Hi there, that doesn’t sound much fun. The trick is working out why she does it. Pain, fear, naughtiness, freshness. Have you ever tried a more experienced rider jumping her . If she is better , it could be respect and that you need to discipline her more. Trotting jumps then halting every single time for at least a week. Jumping every day ( not heaps just 15 jumps ) then you start training her to stop and listen and get a pat after each jump. I would also hope that you’ve checked your saddle isn’t hurting or the bit as that would make her run too . I have a saddle fitting video, check it out and let me know how it fits in the comments. . Good luck
