I like to put eelgrass in areas of flowing water, that’s how it grows naturally in Florida springs and can be easily controlled

That’s a great idea. I do it in my aquariums. I might add some near jets or in the bog filter in a stream and see how it goes.

Hi Kev , I'm glad you and the family had a wonderful holiday. I think, though, that you really must brave the cold water in your dream pond and have a frolic to stir up the sediment.😂😮😊

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, its appreciated. We just had a Dam dug out - no rain expected for a while so Im super keen to design and build something great - your info really help and inspires.

The problem with dams is that they usually only fill up with surface run off and that usually includes clay which leads to suspended particles (cloudy water that never goes clear) You could probably flock it with Calcium Sulphate or get some serious filtration plants? (not bullrushes, as they are a pain to get rid of)

Welcome back! I hope it was a great holiday. My pond won't clear up this year. Same with the barrel. Both are green. I've just received frogbit and water hyacinth (they didn't survive the winter, even indoors) and I'm hoping those help. And perhaps another trip to the local wetland for more microorganisms. Maybe even some bacteria treatment. We've just hit summer here so your autumn weather is not inviting to me. ;)

Hmmm something is out of kilter. What’s different to last year? More fish, fish bigger, more feeding, more sediment?

I am in the Netherlands and the past 2 weeks we had very cold weather for the time of the year and compared to the historical data. Far below average. While the first 5 moths were above average temperatures. And compared to previous years we also had 8% less sunshine. Luckily the night temperatures are going up from 5c to around 13C, and during the day we are slowly going to 20C. We are a week away from summer, but it doesn't feel like it. We have this weird large temperature fluctuations with days that are either far above average temperature or far below average temperature, and I can see that my garden plants are struggling with the cold temperatures and the lack of sunshine.

@@Ozponds Thanks for your moral support. Sometimes the current heavily unusual weather pattern that is happening since the most recent years can be quite confusing and demoralizing. Especially when you spend a lot of time and money planting and trying to grow as many flowers as possible. Not only I am confused, but nature is confused as well. Or maybe I should say unprepared for the heavily unusual changing conditions, that would be a better description. It also concerns me, not so much for myself because I have reached an age where the future is becoming less important for myself. But I do care about future generations. And the signs do not look promising from what I can see.

Thanks for your videos. Would be great if you could make a video of how to get your water as blue as possible for that quarry/swimming pool water look. Adding light colored rocks and keeping the water clear is most important but what other things do you recommend ? Rather not use colordye but what about adding limestone? Thanks again
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 ай бұрын
It’s really just depth and the light. Same rocks in shallower ponds and they look clear, like water in a glass. The depth in the larger pond seems to create that blue look.

I'd be interested how a shallow intake bay or a negative edge is best cleaned? The latter usually has water falling onto a layer of gravel. Any trick besides netting and every so often removing the top layer of gravel and washing it?

Question - Could demolished/broken concrete be used in place of rocks in a wetland filter?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 ай бұрын
It’ll provide good surface area for bacteria but the lime in the concrete will alter the ph.

What fish do you recommend? Any native ones? - (they are very difficult to buy, but I did manage to get some common Galaxias from a drying up river). I did buy 2 pairs of goldfish and ended up with well over 100, but now I haven't seen a single one for well over 3 months (unless they are hiding?)

@@Ozponds Nooo. You have probably saved me 100s and 100s of £ or else I would be buying all these pond liquids, pumps and filters and still not sorting the pond clarity. my pond now is super clear can even see to the bottom and if there is debris stuck the pump. only issue i have now is string algae is still growing. Already reducing how much we feed the koi. They also don't seem to be eating much. Not sure what they are eating. we have koi and gold fish. so far i am using a metal brush to scoop the algae off the edges. I unusually love doing it

@@9catlover I’m glad to hear I’ve saved you money. String algae seems to thrive in very little nutrient, I find the older the pond gets, the less of an issue it becomes.

Hoping you can tell me how powerful(GPH)submersible pump I need, to move water in a 3,500 gallon koi pond, through a filter and 3ft high waterfall
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 ай бұрын
Too many variables, depends on filter type and size, how wide waterfall is. You can find helpful guides on my website and here in the channel. I mostly focus on bog filters for my biological filtration, although I have a few high flow systems.

@@Ozponds i turned off the stream to try and starve it of water. we hadn't had any rain for weeks, but of course that was a good way to ensure the rain started up! Now we have had plenty and more on the way. so yes, the black covering will be the next step.
