The FLINTSTONE Version of a bike roller. Nice idea ...

Man...I'm a cabinet maker by trade, and seeing a MTB powered lathe in a trail building video channel has just got me way too excited! Love it!!

For someone who's never ridden or seen rollers before, you sure got the hang of them really fast. I know roadies who took upwards to 2 weeks to learn to get on, let alone ride hand-carved wooden logs! Sweet rig!

one of the better videos i have seen this year on all youtube. i'm getting in to woodwork and its so nice to see the more natural side of wood work. tree to item. so nice

This video is amazing. I'm a mountain biker but I live in the north east so all winter long, I spend about 5 hours a week on my rollers. On a mountain bike. I love this homemade wooden roller! Although I think that long term, you're going to have a few issues: If possible, I would re-make the rollers themselves. Try to use a lather or a homemade lathe like you did to make them much smoother. You're on an MTB which is good, it's going to absorb a lot of vibration and keep the wheels glued. But even so, , that vibration is going to get old fast. And it will help shake the thing apart. Air up your tires!! I run maxxis hookworms at no less than 40 PSI. I'm not sure of the exact PSI but you want a lot firmer. When you ride low pressure, among the many problems is that the roller starts to separate tire layers and ruin the tire. I think a better belt solution would work better. If you could find something like an automotive fan belt, and then if you could work in a tensioner that actually has a spring, that might work really well. The problem with your system is theres no real tension. Once the strap stretched even a little bit, it will start sliding. You can keep manually adjusting tension but it won't be ideal. Plus I think that strap will wear out pretty quickly compared to something like a rubber fan belt. Otherwise I love this thing! Especially the width! When I was new to rollers, one of the big problems I had was how narrow they are. I'm fine now but years ago, I would have loved a wider setup. Once my plastic drums wear out, I'm going to see if I can build my own wooden ones :D
@GeddyRC4 жыл бұрын
Impeccable editing and a super cool project. The fact that you build that tensioner just shows how dedicated you are to this! Keep it up, been loving all the content and watching this channel take off.

Y’all the smell of fresh cut cedar is delightful, fam. Such a creative use of materials for this project. I took a cycling class in college. There were two of us with mountain bikes. On rainy days we all had to do rollers inside a gym. The sound of mountain bike tires on rollers i swear is louder than those cedar rollers. ‘good times.

I can imagine this being way better because the rough-ness of the wood would make it feel like an actual trail

It honestly does! haha But it could do with a little less bumpiness. Might be more like riding down a washboard at the moment.

Could you do this again but with parts and stuff you can get at the hardware store. I along with most people don’t have the skill to make it the way you did
@chrislukes90374 жыл бұрын
Seems like most of the actual metal hardware is stuff you *would* get from the hardware store (and probably the webbing for the belt, too). Maybe not some small hardware stores, but any home depot-type store should have smooth wooden dowels that could replace the tree trunks for the rollers (as long as they carry them in a big enough diameter -- I have definitely bought narrower ones for other stuff) -- and the frame could just be standard framing lumber (2x4s or 2x6s). I'm actually curious what type of bearings he used, and where he found those -- @Backyard Trail Builds ?
