This is step by step tutorial so sit back and Enjoy.
Today we are gonna build a Savonius eolian turbine,
it's a type of a vertical-axis wind turbine, used for converting the force of the wind into torque on a rotating shaft.
It is one of the simplest turbines we can build using items that can be easily found.
Now will make a quick run down of the things we need for this build.
1. A barrel as blades
2. Shaft with bearings - as you can see we already cut it in half and make it longer
3. Car wheel as the pulley
4. Hollow rectangular bar for the frame
5. Various nuts bolts and plates to put all the things togheter
6. Optional you will need a car hub
the main advantage is that we can use it to lock the turbine in case of storms.
Ok, the list is done, let's make it happen.

This was 1st developed in the mid 1970"s by engineers and scientists at "Center for Alternative Technology" " CAT" in Mid Wales. It was designed using a swashplate pump to lift water from wells in poor arid regions of the world. They did an Apollo 13 type job . They were given a list of things found in the region as scrap and a list of tools and skills found locally. CAT still exists now an accredited school teaching sustainable living. The one developed at CAT worked perfectly and in low wind conditions too.

I like your idea of the brake but I think that a governor to apply it when the wind gets too high is needed. A ball governor which would pull on the cable after a certain wind speed would do it.

If I were you I would add at least three more generators to that turbine. You have the surface area on the tire to accommodate three more. One on the already existing swing arm,and two more on a swing arm opposite the original arm. Then add three more controllers and lead wires into the controls. Break down your power bank into four separately charged units with the outputs of all feeding the inverter or add three more invertors. Just a thought. You might also want to add some Rust-Oleum paint to help reduce the rust.

Use a car or lorry alternator with neodymium magnets for higher efficiency and bring axle all the way to ground level and use gear wheels to increase the mechanical advantage and also the weight of the whole turbine should be concentrated at the bottom , above all check the force of the wind with a smaller model before launching on the real project .

Look up Centrifugal governor, a version could be made that will make the break work even when you are not around. I am thinking of making a similar version as you did, however I want the centrifugal governor to close up the barrel for me, making it slow down as less air is able to turn it. I am still working out how to turn each half of the barrel inwards to close it off from the air. Feel free to take my ideas if you can use them. I am sure, as I am in a town, someone saying it is an eyesore. Good luck. Lee

Nice give away brother the issue with this project you need to check the wind map before trying to build this windmill if you have a wind speed 10 meter/second average all year also you need to check this speed in your house after you need to get a low rpm low torque generator to get benefits from low speed wind .you need also a special charger that keep the voltage stable to desired charging voltage is like MPPT charger .and voila you cut your electric bill

Just a few things needed to make a better unit. First, get a real chipping hammer. Then, add more diagonal braces, from the left to right side. Paint it before it starts to rust. And keep your welding rods away from moisture. Put them in any plastic bag, and keep it sealed. Definitely, don't leave them a few inches above rain soaked ground. Moisture in the rods causes steam, and then you've got air pockets in your welds, and built in weak joints. If you were welding on a paid job, and a professional welder saw that, he'd fire you, then tear apart all your welds to redo them. You pull out one rod at a time, and use it immediately. The more time it's exposed, unheated, the more moisture it collects.

what are you going to fabricate that governor with? good suggestion but you need to consider the "tech level" of the location and people making the device. This might be great if it was built in an area with extremely high winds. I seriously doubt thst it will work in anything less than gale force winds. I will look for updates but I doubt it worked in low wind conditions.
@testiesmcgee9019
@testiesmcgee9019 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it could be made more efficient by having the central axis such that half of each barrel overlap, perhaps a bit less than half. This would reduce mass displacement (like a ballerina) but also allow the air flow to drive counter-rotation, as the air traveling in the direction of the facing blade would generate additional force as it comes around and is directed against the opposing fin before flowing out. The transmission/spring system may also be a problem. if you can commute the rotation with minimal resistance and slippage, this would greatly aid in low-wind conditions. A flywheel system may also be an interesting addition, conserve some rotation (but costly..). Another idea is having no commutation at all and have the power generator sit the end of the shaft. Eager to try this myself! There are presently, far-more compact commercial/fundable projects/solutions. They sit closer to the ground, some are apparently more bird safe in design. Can't recall how their output was though, or if they mentioned most ideal candidate locations for average wind speed as a parameter unfortunately.
