This was an early production video that we put together while trying to feel out video ideas. We would appreciate if you check out some of our later content and tell us how we are progressing! kzbin.info/door/TIEQv49vORHK8lhChKQeuQvideos

Question: My 9" housing, where the pilot bearing seats, has no groove in it to hold the retainer ring. Every time I go to set it in place, it pops back off. What am I supposed to do?

Hi, good video, but i feel that if you are going to discuss bearing preload, then you should show people how to check it and adjust it.

We are working on a thorough walk-through of 3rd member assemblies in a longer upcoming video, which we will surely get comments that it is too long and in-depth (you can't please everyone all the time). This was made to be a brief summary of the major steps and components involved, but if you need specific assistance on any step, we have our tech line available to assist you at 877-910-2244 (M-F 8a-4p).

hi, thanks for the video. I do have a question I purchased my third member from speedway motors and I’m noticing the adjustment nut keeper is not completely lined up with the ring hole it’s kinked a little to the side as if they got it as close as they could, and then put the keeper through. Is this going to be a problem or is that common?

Depending on the manufacturer, some keepers are slightly slotted so that they can pivot slightly when being tightened, and some have longer tangs so that they can be lightly bent into place. It should not cause an issue if the side bearings are properly preloaded and the bearing caps are torqued properly. If it just looks terrible, you could remove the keeper(s), back off the bearing caps bolts a bit, tighten the adjuster(s) to the next hole, then reinstall and torque everything to spec. The amount of backlash shouldn't change significantly enough, but it can be re-checked if it is a concern.

Could a rear differential cover be removed, and this third member be bolted in place of the differential cover and act as a union for a tandem axle build?

We understand your question, but as a brief answer: no, it is intended for use in a single Ford 9" model rear end which were very common in the mid-50s-early 80s Ford cars and light trucks, and is still common in many custom racing and performance build applications. Tandem axles would be more common in heavy class trucks or designed and built from a specialty custom engineer/fabricator.

What about the oil slinger?
@rearwheelperformance
@rearwheelperformance 3 жыл бұрын
A factory style pinion oil slinger would be a good addition, and would be added before the pinion seal installation if it was available at the time. If you know a reasonable source for them readily available in bulk quantity new, please let us know.
